So I’m on Clubhouse now listening to other artists on how they got into the most prestigious galleries. There is apparently an artist who is taking the over the style of a dead well-known artist Robert Nava. He is making paintings in Nava’s style and changed his name to Robert Not-va. Now collectors are buying up his paintings for 12k+. So maybe I will have to change my identity, say my name is now Sisa Lalerno, and I am going to copy Lisa Salerno’s style, except I am not Lisa. I get asked often if my kids are artists “just like me”. The truth is I have never pressured them into doing anything and I leave it up to them what their interests are. Sometimes they make art but other times they write stories. My son enjoys producing frame my frame animation. My daughter was recently in a play. They also like making videos and editing photos. When it comes to kids and creativity, art is not about producing a tangible thing. It’s about producing thinking. Critical thinking. Fearless thinking. Boundless and expansive thinking...all skills that will help a child problem solve and navigate each challenge in their lives. Other lessons kids learn when creativity is encouraged? Risk-taking, what to do when you make a “mistake”, how to give and accept constructive criticism, how you back get what you put into something. The act of creating can also teach mindfulness and lead to emotional healing. The list goes on... So no, I don’t wish to pressure them to be artists “like me”. I really just want them to be kind human beings first, then maybe contribute something “uniquely them” to the world. To me, the word “artist” isn’t limited by occupation or skill. An artist is someone who is brave, bold and full of fire. Someone who is willing to trade in comfort for authenticity; willing to let go of security in exchange for a good adventure.
