This project isn't dead! But my PhD studies and my latest gig as a Game Design teacher are taking a lot of my time.
I think I'm starting to figure out the kind of camera and UI I want for the game (going back to my first inspiration, from Edith Finch -- the fish cannery sequence). I made the pic to test the camera angle and overall setting I'd like to try (this was done in MagicaVoxel for now) and also playing with Inkscape for the game's title.
I really want to get a better grasp at Blender now so I can animate things more. It's gonna be a challenge but I think it would be best for me to start this way -- hopefully it'll get easier in the long run.

I’ll be posting one older voxel test for Archeocook since I was too busy last week to prepare a proper post with more details about the project. I really like the tile-based look of this, but Im still figuring out a way to show and animate something like this alongside the game’s text and UI. We’ll see!

any books or youtube vids you'd recommend for Narrative Design/Game Writing learnin'?
thx!
-isaac.
Hi there! I’ve heard good things about the game narrative toolbox books and Hannah Nicklin’s writing for games. I think Emily’s Short work is also interesting (to go beyond “branching stories”). I also love Meghna Jayanth’s writings about decolonial practices and narrative design.
YouTube: Besides GMTK, StoryModeOn (from the folks behind Lessons from the screenplay) had a couple of interesting videos if I remember correctly but it’s been a while.
Most things I learned tbh were while doing the thing. About worldbuilding in general, I really like VanderMeer’s Wonderbook though. Hope that helps!

There's already a web-based version of an early prototype on itch.io. if anyone's curious to follow the development of Archeocook, a narrative game set in a solarpunk inspired world.
The overall pacing of this prototype is not what I have in mind for the whole game, but the epistolary format + a very basic puzzle game for balancing flavors are already there, and what I want to explore more in the coming months.
I'm hoping to make a 2-5h game, with several recipes and letters.
I often think about Ursula K. Le Guin's intro of The Left Hand of Darkness when I'm working on futuristic worlds. I've been wanting to make a game/write a story that's in the vein of what she described for quite some time.
I'll be sharing here casually about what solarpunk could mean to me, why I've been playfully using cooking and flavors as my main focus, my current experiments with Voxel Art/MagicaVoxel, Ink and Godot. I hope to write once a week, we'll see how it goes.
Thank you for playing and/or reading me!

Hi! Re-learning how to Tumblr again like in the 90s. Here's a test I made yesterday for my solo project Archeocook (a narrative game about food and flavors in a solarpunk-inspired setting). It won't be the final view/angle I'll use for the game I think, but I wanted to play with proportions and such.
