Favourite Track of the Month

This year has been a mind blowing year of music. The more I dig into the local scene and Australian music in general, the more I am overwhelmed with the amount of songwriting/musical talent there is. It honestly gets me out of bed in the morning. I’m so blessed to be part of it and I can’t wait to hear more.Â
As September has now left us, I decided to point out what i thought what was the best track on our Crawlin the Radar playlist for this September Month. While there was much amazing, diverse music coming out, there was one stand out that blew my mind personally. This track was a song by Melbourne local band Kilns, who debuted this year with their stella track “Go Slowly.”Â
I haven’t heard a track so down to earth yet so uplifting and confessional that i’ve felt has grabbed me like this track. This track has blissful guitar work with its bright tonality and brings its energetic charisma with the band chemistry having such a seamless flow.Â
But what grabbed me the hardest with this track was the vocals. I haven’t heard vocals like this so effortless and emotional in a long time. As the first chorus comes in and the first line sings the title “Go Slowly” with the stripped instrumentation. I honestly melted. I melted because it creates this intimate moment where a singer can really grab you by the collar and tell you how they really feel. Especially with the lyrics in that ChorusÂ
“Go Slowly, although your heart aches in a hurry”Â
It honestly feels like its coming from a place of concern and comfort, but it’s so sweet and to a certain degree wholesome to a person in a tough space when it comes to love. Especially in this day and age, where love can always be a tough factor and some people’s hearts a racing for the finish line and lose sight of the view on the way.Â
As a whole, this track is timelessly effortless and I can’t wait for these guys to do great things and release more new music!

Endless Heights (Appreciation post)

3 years ago, I had the opportunity of seeing an upcoming metal/emo band Endless Heights at one of their shows in Singapore, when I was in High School with less hair on the top. I think it was when Endless Heights had just released their Teach You How to Leave- Ep and did a show with BreakEven. The boys were so nice as always and so keen to get on the stage doing what they love with their rock aggressive catchy sound.Â
Anyway, LAST WEEK I had the pleasure of seeing these boys again at the Colonial Hotel in Melbourne playing an absolute explosive set before you guys head off tour. They played an explosive set after bands Clove and Hindsight, that featured new singles You Coward, Pray I Fade, songs from their debut commercial album and older singles “Whispers in the Dark.”Â
However, what shocked me the most about that night was when lead guitarist Jem Siow noticed my little head in the crowd, while he was setting up for his band’s set and yelled out “Singapore dude”. I still can’t believe he remembered me after all this time. It honestly made my week!! But what’s awesome about that moment was the reflection of how communal the music community is. As a fan of local music, I believe that the scene is compiled of friends and memories gathered to witness history in the making but also new developing relationships that last a long life time. While being in sight of great music, it’s the mateships that come along the way that make the art bloom and feel personalised. Especially when the artists are engaged and want to get to know the hearts they’ve touched or new people that have become new fans.Â
I’m so proud of what you guys have accomplished with the album and the tour. Good luck with your upcoming tour with Amity Affliction in the UK. Can’t wait to see you guys in Melbourne soon! 💙🌟

Weekend Highlights: Sophisticated Dingo @OldBar

After releasing their debut Ep: “Tastes Like The Real Thing.” The Sophisticated Dingo boys brought a celebration event at the Old Bar to create musical extravaganza that had people gathering before the Footy Public Holiday.
Making all the stops with boxed lighting and visuals from their latest music video on the Old Bar stage. The Sophisticated Dingo duo brought the Old Bar a night to remember and give you a taste of the real deal. After shredding sets from diverse supports: Slim Jefferies, Bad Bangs, Face Face and HouseHats. The Dingos brought it home at midnight before the Public Holiday Eve.
Playing a frothing set that had heads banging and bodies shaking, you can’t go wrong with the boys Sophisticated Dingo. With their 2 piece set up the boys brought a flame filled set of songs that not only. Everytime I see the Dingos, I’m alway in disbelief with how explosive their sound works. Only having 2 members in their set up, the band is able to provide an intricate sound in their instrumentation, while simultaneously provide a rockin’ fun time in their live performance with their intimate band chemistry and energy.
If you’re looking for a band that wants to give you that sense of hype and excitement to motivate your day or your just keen for a shred filled time. Sophisticated Dingos will show you a good time!

TEENAGE DADS- SUNBURNT (NEW RELEASE)Â
In spirit of the Public Holiday Eve, coming in hot on a Thursday morning. The Frankston lads from Teenage Dads welcomed their brand new single “Sunburnt” with a groovy music video. Teenage Dads are 4 piece Indie Pop collective that take influences from ShoeGaze aesthetics with cloudy synthesis and infectious melodies that mould blends of quirky pop psychedelic jams to shake the floor.
The Dad’s new single Sunburnt does exactly that. This new song “Sunburnt”has such a floating aesthetic with its chorus toned guitars to float the listener into the track, creating a bright notion welcome mat to the track once the band comes in. With the band kicking in with a punchy, finger pointing sound. I can’t help but keep my smiles up due to their infectious uplifting instrumentation that shows such simplicity but creates a bobble head effect. I honestly can’t describe the song without feeling a sense of joy within the track.
I love how this track has such a fluent blend of so many core ingredients to give you the boost for your morning. Conducted by cotton candy synthesisers during the verses and lead singer Jordan’s sweet vocals. The band creates a sparkling energy that shows transitions of psychedelics before the chorus’s that are nothing but head banging and show such synergy. While the song is heartbreakingly sweet with the lyrics suggesting a time of moving on and carrying on with life from a time of rough spot within a past acquaintance/relationship. As a fan I can’t help but feel a sense of warmth within the songs dimensional traits by creating a shiny summer filled aesthetic within a motivational carrying on type lyricism.
If you’re looking for a band that knows how to make you smile endlessly and show you joyful time. Teenage Dads are the band for you. Their music is uplifting, colourful and punches in the diverse heart warming lyricism that is relatable within an aesthetic that is nothing but a quality time. The Dad’s have been a personal favourite of mine for a while and are in the midst of process to release their debut album in the forthcoming months. These guys are going to be the next big thing to hit your radar and they have a residency in mine.

DIET- SUNDOWN LAUNCH/REVIEW

To celebrate the Public Holiday Eve for the Big AFL Grand Final weekend. The Melbourne music scene was blessed with a powerhouse show that treated fans of live music and indie music talent to a music fiesta, making Fitzroy the place to be! Thanks to the guys from Melbourne band- DIET. Not only did they have crowds moving, but brought out a mega line-up of local talent that are rising in the industry.
DIET are a Melbourne 5 piece Indie Rock band that embellish their sun filled waves into their lively energy amongst their music. Coming back from BigSound and releasing their 2nd Ep “SunDown” the lads built upon the celebration of the Public holiday Eve, to celebrate the release of their EP.
To celebrate this special occasion of their new ep release “Sundown.” DIET delivered a fine line up of talent that brought a lively fluorescent fluidness to the show. Kicking off the night, Melbourne locals “hotel fifteen love” brought a warm welcome to the night with their strong bubbly instrumentation and convicting vocals. While their seamless band chemistry and stripped back interaction definitely had the crowds swaying,  you can’t mistaken the bands energetic musicality that definitely brought resemblance towards the upbeat theme of the night.
Following on, BigSound debut artist Candy took the Evelyn hotel stage by storm with his lush band set that had grooving along. Taking the industry by surprise with his punchy vocal tone and colourful instrumentation taking influence to bands such as “The Cure.” Playing new songs throughout the set that had fans like myself anticipating for a new release announcement. Candy had the crowd warming up the Evelyn stage once he performed his singles Thankful and Apartment in the city. Striking with flaming lead guitars and relentless drums throughout the entirety of the set. Candy strikes me as the artist that knows how to lift the energy up, but also tell you stories that are collar grabbing to realism, whether that’s in real life experiences with people or hurdles in life.
After a whirlwind set from Candy. I felt a sense of real excitement for the next band: RAT!hammock. While the band have only released one Ep, the band’s 2 new singles of 2018: “Power” and “June”, have shown a sense of commercialism and maturity to their sound that had my head turning majorly. Blending similarities to bands such as Tiny Little Houses with a sense of rawness and fluidness in vocal harmony. The band has created something unique, which was no surprise to their live set. Presenting their laid back personalities and local support to the crowd, RAT!hammock had crowds linking arms with one another to sway amongst the cloudy yet soaring tracks throughout their set.
Finally to close the night, the lads from DIET brought the sun down to the Evelyn Hotel. As a personal fan of the band’s recent Ep and a personal favourite song of mine: “Take Me.” The band did not hold back in bringing a show stopping night. Having the capability to bring down beach towels and sunshine through their lively sound, the band had crowds jumping, turning and anthemic sing alongs. However, the band brought a surprise element to their striving set with the glamorous horn section for the opening track of the Sundown EP-” Don’t Need It.” To close off the night, DIET played my personal favourite “Take Me” to bring it back to base and warm the souls of the crowd.

Septober Spill Residency Ft Nathan Wong, Jimmy Harwood and MissMay @Bar Open

The Septober Spill Residency is a weekly showcase of rising talent drafted by the first year Box Hill Institute students to create fun, live experience at Fitzroy’s Bar Open. Each week of the month of September the Box8 team have provided a diverse range of bands that playing along with different genres, reaching from multiple slices of rock to soul shaking singe-songwriters shake new ranges of upcoming talent in the melbourne live music scene. Within the first weeks of the Septober Spill Residency, the Bar Open showcased bands such as Le Pine, Bleach, Blend Meander and many more rocking acts to showcase the upcoming rock band talent in Melbourne’s live scene.
However the team, decided to shake things up with a change of pace. Showcasing new talent from the singer-songwriter umbrella, the Box8 team had acts MissMay, Jimmy Harwood and Nathan Wong to rock the Bar Open stage. With this lineup the anticipation/description for the night was targeted to provide the following.
“The 3rd week of the Septober Spill flows on through to the 26th with Nathan Wong, Jimmy Harwood and MissMay shaking it up a bit mixing some soul-shaking goth rock, pop and roots with a lil jazzy undertones to knock it all off.”
I’m excited to say that the night definitely brought this to the table. With Dandenong singer-songwriter MissMay presenting her powerhouse vocals and deadpan lyrics/ banter between songs. MissMay moved the crowd to persuade her deeply emotive raw storytelling and collar grabbing melodies.
Following that, Jimmy Harwood brought the grooves to his solo performance at the Bar Open. Playing songs from his current releases and new tracks about his life experiences. Jimmy brought the crowd his blending influences of bands such as Sticky Fingers and hip hop to create his one man show that had heads turning.
Finally to finish the night off. Headliner Nathan Wong debut his first official band show ever to bring home the energetic charisma to shake up the Bar Open stage floor.  Playing original songs from his repertoire with his sunshine personality and hair flopping stage presence that had crowds waving around the dance floor. It was Nathan’s band version of Post Malone’s- Fall Apart that had crowds demanding for a like a version release to be release.
The Melbourne live music scene is interesting. With the large variety of music venues and opportunities to perform with the encouraging culture for the arts to be celebrated. It’s times like these where an event like this plays a special role in the industry. Having young artists and young aspiring music industry individuals on a platform at a recognised venue provides the stepping stone to the future. A platform where new artists who are introduced to the scene and are able to play their first show and add it to their catalogue of experiences, not only does it induces a sense of community. But it capsules a moment in time that audiences can remember as the night they witnessed raw talent at its early days.
