Recording the sounds of an isolated waterfall in winter wasn’t such an easy task - the water spray was everywhere, so I couldn't get too close without my gear getting soaked! A bit of creative thinking allowed me to get close enough to get some really good perspectives of the waterfall, and some more traditional methods were used to record far perspectives and the rivers surrounding the area.
Aber Falls is a 120-foot free-falling waterfall in North Wales, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, see in a beautiful valley. Sound tends to become trapped in the valley, and there’s little human activity to be heard - this makes it a great location for field recording.
The recording in the video is edited down, with some of the best bits of audio taken from the morning, although its down sampled from 96kHz/24-bit to 48kHz/16-bit for video.
Enjoy the relaxing sounds of the Waterfall and rivers it flows into and let me know what you think of it!

Recording the Dawn Chorus at the Alwen Reservoir in North Wales. Not the first dawn chorus I’ve recorded, and certainly won’t be the last either! The morning was very cold for early autumn in the UK, but was worth getting up for the purple sunrise and the amazing sounds.
When setting up for recording a badger ran past us, most likely we disturbed them on their way back to their set, its a location not frequented by human activity so early in the morning. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a recording of the badger running and grunting, but did manage to get a few badger chirps and growls in the recording afterwards, listen out and see of you can find it.

Recording from the Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic.
Probably the most famous attraction in the Czech Republic, aside from beer (pivo in Czech), the Charles Bridge is a very busy pedestrian footbridge, with around 30 inward facing statues on it sides. The bridge was built in the late 14th century and has been the site of many battles throughout Pragues history, most notably the site of a fierce battle against the invading Swedish army, in which the Bohemian army managed to repel the Swedes, ending the Thirty Years War in 1648.
The ambience on the bridge today is filled with the sounds of street vendors, tourists from all over the world, speaking many different languages, the sounds of boats and trams, and even musicians on the bridge. Enjoy this unique soundscape!

What does it sound like inside a glass of cola?
Recorded using a hydrophone in the glass, this lets us hear the filling, fizzing and popping of the cola from perspective we never would be able to experience for ourselves!

Out recording at a new location this evening, Alwen Reservoir in North Wales. The reservoir is surrounded by beautiful woodland and moors, and the birdsong in the evening was amazing. Got a good 20 minutes of continuous recording done in the small amount of time I had there - I’ll get on with editing the audio this weekend and uploading it here!

Recording splashes with a hydrophone (and microphone) as well as tree movements with a contact microphone.
The hydrophone/microphone combination works really well, you can add in the hydrophone signal for more “weight”, or could use it in shots where the camera is underwater, for a more “authentic” feel.
The contact mic is great for recording sounds without background noise or wind interference. This was recorded in a park with plenty of activity, but only the branch movement was picked up using this.
Audio available on the website www.prorecordings.co.uk later today.

Recording in the corn fields near home tonight, and it was beautiful! I’d originally intended to record at a rock bank at the nearby river. I got there and set up and the sounds of insects and birds was beautiful, until a bunch of kids came along wanting to play in the river. I hadn’t even pressed record yet either. I let them carry on and moved along to the corn fields, the predominant sounds here though are roads, but still some interesting sounds to be had.

Recording in Hyde Park this afternoon. Using the TASCAM today as the sound devices recorder plus microphones is a little bit too cumbersome to walk around in this heat with all day!

I’ve been to Oulton Park Race Circuit this afternoon, a great selection of races on today too. I took my Tascam DR-40 with me, as it’s a bit more discreet, and less cumbersome for a full days recording at a busy circuit. Some brilliant deceleration and acceleration sounds at the corners, and straight drive-by sounds on the straights. Audio to follow soon!

Recording in the Snow
Okay, so it wasn’t snowing - but it had snowed. And as R. Murray Schafer said, “Snow absorbs sound”. I wanted to test that theory, and my results showed that, no, snow does not absorb sound, but it certainly does make the soundscape different. More bleak and desolate, and quiet.
The local park leads to a set of fields where the roads cannot be heard through the trees and this makes it the ideal spot to record, except in the summer, when there are always people playing in the river. So I took the opportunity to record the river while I could.

Yet another Road recording! This was just a quick test of setting up my equipment using my new Orca Bag for the Mix Pre-3, so the nearest sound source to my house was called upon once again.
This is a low bit rate mp3 version of the recording. For a full 96kHz/24-bit WAV or AIFF file, please send me a message!

I’ve been recording my brother doing his thing today. Here’s one of the videos that we managed to make. Simple three-mic setup was a breeze with the new SD mixpre-3 and one camera meant I could take over filming duties too!

This is an excerpt of an audio recording taken on my new Sound Devices Mix Pre-3 field recorder/mixer. It was taken late at night from a bridge over the A55 dual carriageway, the main trunk road through my native North Wales, UK.
This is a low bit rate version, you can purchase the high resolution file, along with many other high resolution audio files from my website: www.prorecordings.co.uk
