right person, wrong time
pairing: chanyeol x reader
word count: 676
genre: angst, established relationship
summary: you just weren’t ready
“i’m sorry this wasn’t what you had planned.” you spoke quietly, voice barely above a whisper. your eyes were glossed over as you sat against the wooden floor while he opted for the couch. the room was lit only by the candles he had placed around. rose petals trailing along the floor as your eyes wandered along them. there was also a bottle of champagne that sat alone in a bucket of ice. it was all apart of the evening he had planned. he sighed and from the corner of your eye you saw him shake his head. “it’s not your fault.” his answer causing you to tense up, but oh how it was.
you turned your attention to the ring that sat in your outstretched palm. it was gorgeous. a beautiful diamond that sat alone in a silver band that was so elegant it took your breath away every time you looked down at it. it was absolutely beautiful and if it was just any other ring you would have it on your finger to display proudly but instead it felt heavy and cold. you sighed again as chanyeol sat up, walking by you softly. you raised your hand to graze over his, silently asking him to stay right where he was. his legs stopped and you swallowed hard. gently flipping his hand over and laying the ring inside it, pushing his fingers over to make a fist. you finally looked up at him and saw his eyes were just as glossed over as yours must have been as he stared at his closed hand before he was shaken from his own thoughts and suddenly crouched in front of you, eye to eye.
you couldn’t break his gaze as he opened his hand and placed the ring back into your own. you began to protest before he cut you off. “this is yours, it’s not meant to belong to anyone but you. not me and not anyone else.” he grazed his thumb over your now bawled fist as you clutched it tightly, the diamond poking and prodding at your palm. “this is as embarrassing as it is please don’t make it harder.” his words seemed to poke at the numbing pain in your heart as the tears you had held back for the past few hours began to fall. the ring fell from your hands as they moved to cover your face as silent hot tears cascaded down.
he sniffled as he pulled you close to his chest and sat down with a thud along the floor you had sat alone on for the evening up until this point. you both began to cry into one another’s grasp. it was like white hot searing pain was spreading from your heart throughout your whole entire soul. you knew that you couldn’t blame anyone but yourself. you were the one that told him no. the falter in his smile when he realized you had rejected his proposal hadn’t stopped echoing throughout your mind. serving as a reminder that this was in fact your fault and you broke the heart of the one person you loved most in this world.
time seemed to slow to a crawl before you both finally stopped crying. the silence that fell amongst you was so depressing that anyone would want to flee it. it was heavy and suffocating. you sniffled before looking up at the man who still held you tight against him. his face was red and his breaths were shallow. he had a broken look in his eyes as he stared at the floor in front of you. you followed his gaze and your eyes landed on the ring along with his that had been dropped during your exchange. the silence was deafening.
“what does this mean for us?” you asked, voice low and shaky. he didn’t answer right away and you couldn’t bring yourself to meet his gaze when you asked. so you waited until he finally spoke. “i don’t know.”

forbidden fairytale pt 2
pairing: prince!taeyong x princess!reader
word count: 3.7k
warnings: cursing, mentions of drinking
synopsis: falling in love with your childhood best friend from a kingdom that hated yours just as much as yours hated his wasn’t apart of the plan. but as the years pass you both realize that your relationship has an expiration date as much as you pretend it doesn’t. and with the news of a planned marriage already set for him you make the decision to break things off so he can fulfill his duties as the next in line king. but what about you?
a/n: since part 1 is so old and i don’t LOVE it i might edit it and repost with the same storyline just better written so i apologize in advance if part 1 isn’t as good as part 2 or vice versa 🤏
part 1 of 2
you knew you had made a mistake.
you knew it when his eyes couldn’t meet yours, gaze falling to the frostbitten ground, his head shaking in disbelief. when your own chest began to tighten and you couldn’t seem to swallow the lump that had already formed in your throat. and you still knew it now, six months later.
you sighed as you tried to rearrange the tiara you had already attempted to nestle in between your perfectly styled locks. yet you still couldn’t get it the way you had wished and in your short lived frustration threw it onto your bed with a huff. you let out a sigh, turning to look out the window, the volume of voices outside tearing your attention away from your first world problems. your head lulled into your palm, watching as the crowd outside of your castle was growing by the minute.
you hadn’t made a public appearance since that night. too grief stricken to even begin to fake your way through them. staying within the castle walls where even appearances outside of your room became a rarity. but that was gonna change as today you were returning back to the public eye through a ball your mom planned to throw, hidden by the theme of welcoming in the summer.
the knock at your door stirred you from your thoughts as you turned just in time to see a flash of green race in between the wall and your now ajar door. you blew the strand of hair that had fallen against your forehead in amusement as your mother straightened her figure after just sneaking in as if she wasn't allowed to be there.
“hi my beautiful,” she cooed as her hands made their way to your face, gently cradling it, cautious of the makeup that painted your complexion. she beamed at you as you looked the most put together you had in months. hair neatly tucked away leaving just a few strands from the hairspray assault you had endured just for accentuations, the dark shadow that laid across your eyes only distubred by the liner that accompanied it. the only thing that was missing was the tiara that laid on your duvet and the dress that was in the other room, which you assumed was why your mother was in here. her hands met with your shoulders and she gave them a tight yet quick squeeze. “are you ready?” the question holding more meaning than one. and with a nod you were ushered away to get your dress on.
during your period of absence you also stayed away from newspapers and the internet in fear of seeing the thing that would break your heart the most. you knew he had married her but to see it scrawled in a headline somewhere would have been salt in the wound and you weren't ready to face that reality. so instead you hid from it. you hadn't even spoken to him since that night either. which in the first few weeks hurt the most. it was almost as if you were begging him to change your mind, almost daring him to. but he never came to whisk you away into the countryside like he had always told you he would. and yet you had no one else to blame besides yourself.
the zipper of your dress was almost silent amongst the talk between your mother and aunt as they talked of whatever it was they did. you couldn't help but nibble your lip in anxiety, mentally cursing yourself in fear of messing up the lipstick that coated your worried frown. your nerves tuning out the conversation around you, only picking up bits and pieces as they were in their own world. you were scared to return to this new normal. a world that was like it was six months prior. just without him.
as if your mother could sense your worry she pulled you into a very needed hug, turning you on your heels to do so. you sighed into her embrace, wrapping up all the comfort you could. “i know you're scared, and i know you're worried but i promise everything will work out, in fact you'll wish you had done it sooner.” she assured with yet another shoulder squeeze before pulling away as you mentally braced yourself for the event that was just minutes away.
your mother excused herself before returning just moments later with your fallen crown in hand. you laughed as she smiled knowingly, before settling it into your hair, hands working carefully to center it perfectly. much to your annoyance it only took her a moment to place it, unlike the many attempts it took you. but after she finished, you faced the mirror that took up almost the entire wall and admired the work of your mother and yourself. the blue color of the dress that engulfed you in it’s icy embrace complimented your body in every sense of the phrase. the deepness of the sapphires nestled in your ears along with the ones placed in your crown complimenting it’s tone. the colors that ran along your face in all shades and hues worked together to bring out all your best features. and for the first time in what felt like forever, you smiled.
your mother put her last finishing touches, forehead wrinkled in concentration. seconds turned to minutes as you waited for her nod of approval to finally tell you that you were finished silently hoping you weren't already late. and when it finally came you were whisked out of the room not a moment later and into the hallway which was found to be comfortably empty. but not before your mother stopped you, opening your hands to lay your mask within them. you had almost forgotten that it was a masquerade ball until the piece of blue and white fabric was laid in your hands. it was your mothers idea, her intent being to help ease you back into the public eye and allow you to enjoy your night without the suffocating stares of those in attendance. and as you slipped it over your eyes, you were ready.
you approached the entrance as the tall doors loomed over you and suddenly you felt very small. you let out a shaky breath as your hand ghosted over the handle, listening to the chorus of voices and music blaring from the other side. realizing that once you pushed them open there was no going back. you stood there for a moment rethinking your whole decision and doubting that now was the right time, already planning to turn back, but with one final breath you pushed them open and entered what would be the night that changed everything.
the mix of voices swarmed your mind as you took a step in. the music was the only rival in volume to the chatter of the night in which you had assumed was just gossip and catch ups between old friends. as you descended deeper into the crowd you slipped in between bodies and surveyed those closest to you. thanks to the masks everyone adorned you didn’t recognize almost anyone, and they didn’t recognize you. the only people you did find familiar were just servants and your mother and aunt who were talking close by and you couldn’t say you were complaining.
you kept your gaze low as you approached the bar where drinks were already being served and thanked the tender as he handed you a drink. your nerves began to disappear after the first sip and you began to enjoy the dance as you made your rounds chattering and making small talk with many civilians and friends of yours. the atmosphere was warm and energetic and soon you had made a full round back to the bar. yet this time you weren't alone. you hadn’t managed to speak your order before a masked man made his presence known by slipping a hand around your waist. you gulped as you turned, meeting the gaze of an unfamiliar figure before wriggling free from his grasp, but as it would turn out he was unrelenting.
“what's a face like yours doing in this big room all along?” he asked, eyes raking your figure shamelessly as you had to keep from rolling your eyes at such a bad and predictable attempt at a pick up line. “am i not wearing a mask?” you asked, raising an eyebrow. “what?’ he questioned, confusion flooding his not so handsome features you had now come to notice. maybe the masks benefited more people than you thought. “you said a face like mine, but i'm wearing a mask, no?” “so you mean a face like everyone else in this room?” you watched the gears in his mind turn as his face began to redden. you assumed he gave up after that as he stalked off back into the crowd and you couldn't help but snicker. clinking the ice in your empty glass as you rolled your wrist you realized you had lost your thirst before leaving the glass on the bar, stalking off in the other direction, hoping to never see him again.
before you knew it it had been hours since you first stepped foot into such an event. you noticed this mark as the upbeat and classical music that had been playing throughout the night was now exchanged for slower songs and as the people around you began to pair away you felt like the odd one out. biting your lip, you began to make a quiet escape back to the bar before a voice rang out through the music that seemed to be targeted at you. “would you like to dance?” you stopped and turned back on your heels ready to decline the offer already thinking that it was the man you had met previously. but as you turned to reply you realized it was someone entirely different. the man had black hair and a clean shaven face. his sharp jawline stood out instantly but with the covering of the mask the only other feature you could see further was his deep brown eyes which caused your gaze to fix onto them. you realized your eyes had lingered for too long as his smile turned into a smirk causing you to blush from being caught eyes tearing away from the man before you. this man was nothing short of what you considered perfection but something felt off. he was studying you as you had studied him, intensely, but as if he was trying to confirm something with each movement of his eyes.you felt a sense of confusion as you tried to piece together why the man before you was so achingly familiar.
you shook your head as a silent no, too embarrassed to dance with the main who caught you staring. but to your surprise the man let out a laugh instead of turning red and leaving. “are you sure, i promise you won’t regret it.” your eyes followed his gaze as he looked around the room at all those who had paired away leaving you two as the only ones who hadn’t. you mumbled under your breath as you apprehensively took his outstretched hand in a reluctant agreement. the man turned out to be more odd than you had originally thought because it was almost like he knew every move you were going to make before you even thought to do it. you were in perfect harmony, like two pieces in a puzzle. both of you gliding through the room as if you had done this many times before. “have we met?” you asked as you stared up at the man once more. he smiled in reply, not saying a word. you followed his lead as you studied him further yet you still couldn’t soothe the ache in your stomach. it wasn't until you stumbled over his feet, breaking your trance, did you finally realize from the nickname that tumbled from his lips. “be careful princess.”
you froze as your eyes darted up from your feet to analyze the masked figure as your chest tightened. and as you studied him he studied you. it was as if the crowd around you had disappeared and you were the only two there. in an attempt to make sure you were right your hand met his face, fingers curving around the material of his mask, slightly lifting the black lace mask he adorned. your breath caught in your throat as the oh so familiar scar was etched into his skin. he smiled as you shakily removed your hand. how could you have been so stupid. this couldn't be him, there was no way. he was supposed to be married ruling a kingdom miles away yet somehow he was here dancing with you in the middle of thousands of people. he didn't say a word as he led you through the room of crowded bodies and into the summer night where the wind blew your dress behind you as your mind raced your feet to see who could get somewhere faster.
you stopped in front of the garden you had met in so many times before as you still tried to register just exactly what was happening, even going as far to close your eyes and pinch yourself to make sure you weren’t dreaming. but the echo of his amused laughter had your eyes springing open to find that he was still there. he slowly untied his mask and you watched as it fell onto the stone path. you insticly reached out to touch his face again as you inspected every detail on it this time, in shock you had the opportunity to do it once more. he nuzzled into your hand as you cupped the side of his face eyes wide in wonderment.
he looked the same, the only difference being his newly dyed hair that was as black as the night you stood under. a sharp contrast to the faded pink he had the last time you met. suddenly remembering that he was supposed to be married, your eyes flew to his hand noticing there was no wedding band to be found.
“why are you here?” you mumbled trying to rationalize everything in front of you, taking a step back from him. “looking for you.” he answered, like it was the easiest question in the world. it was silent except for the breeze that was blowing throughout the rows of flowers surrounding you. you raised your eyebrow at the man before you. “taeyong, you’re supposed to be married.” you stated. “and where the hell is your wedding ring?” your eyes were wide in disbelief. “did you come here to take me on as some sort of mistress because if you-” you were cut off by his hands covering your still moving mouth as he rolled his eyes at your assumption. “if you would let me speak.” he muttered as he slowly removed his hands. you waited with your arms crossed for him to elaborate.
“i’ll have you know i never got married in the first place.” he raised his hands, one pointing to his ring finger on the other. “where have you been, living under a rock?” “it was in every headline for weeks!” you felt your face heat up as you realized maybe shutting yourself out wasn’t the best idea. he quickly realized that you in fact didn’t know and he began speaking again. “turns out the girl i was supposed to marry isn’t even the king’s daughter, her mom had an affair, word got out and now we’re here.” he smiled as your mouth widened. you let out a startled laugh at the revelation. “you’re being completely serious right now?” you asked as the whole thing sounded like a joke and you were waiting for a punchline. “would i be here if i wasn’t?” he countered. he made a valid point, would he?
“anything else?” he asked as you went quiet in thought. “um yeah why exactly are you looking for me?” you began to speak as you reached up to untie the mask you had forgot you were wearing. “i understand you’re not married but what did you expect to accomplish, we’re in the exact same position as we were 6 months ago.” you stated, trying to again understand what he had thought was gonna happen as you dropped your mask beside his. his father still hated yours and yours still hated him. being together was still out of the question, ring or not. he rolled his eyes at you again and you resisted the urge to roll your eyes. “tae i’m being serious, what did you expect to do once you found me?” “that we’d ride off into the sunset together?” he pinched between his brow before he spoke. “why are you being so negative about this?” you snorted. “i’m being realistic.”
he plopped down on a bench and you followed behind him still waiting for his answer. “how do you think i knew you would be here?” he asked, eyes trained on you. “to be honest i didn’t give it much thought, i was too concerned with the idea of you coming to ask me to be your mistr-” his hands flew to your mouth again as he looked unimpressed. “why would i do that?” he asked, retracting his hands. “good question, but how did you know i was gonna be here?” the question now circling your head. “im so glad that you asked.” he stated sarcastically. “i had someone tell me from the inside.” you laughed. “and who exactly would that be?” he smirked. “your mom and no, that isn't a your mom joke.”
you raised an eyebrow at that. “why would she do that?” you questioned confused. “my god you ask too many questions.” he mumbled as you shoved him lightly. “i’m serious, why would she? i assumed you just got lucky.” he smiled cheekily. “well i kind of convinced my dad to let me marry you instead.” you shot up from the bench, eyes wide. “you did WHAT?” you asked in shock. he laughed again at your reaction. “and you didn’t, i don't know, start off with that?” you yelled pointing an accusatory finger at the man before you. he raised his hands up defensively before shrugging. “you were the one who wouldn't let me speak.” you swatted at his hands before he began to explain how he managed to do that.
“i tried to convince him before the news broke out about what’s her name.” “taeyong you really didn’t bother to learn her name?” you asked. “no why would i, now stop interrupting.” he replied, pitching your arm. you mumbled in protest. “but it didn’t work, he wanted me to marry her and establish all these relations blah blah blah but-” he said drawing out his sentence. “we found out she wasn’t of full royal blood and suddenly our relationship didn’t matter.” he smiled. “so i took the opportunity and talked up how it would be better to establish relations with your kingdom instead and because he didn’t have any better options he finally agreed.” you grinned in amusement before asking, “now where do my mother or more importantly my parents fall into this?” he lit up. “i was waiting for you to ask, it would be really stupid to show up here with a one sided truce so i got into contact with your mom through your aunt who happens to be friends with my aunt.” you raised your eyebrow at him again before he swatted at you. “it’s a whole thing, and she passed the message on and they met and agreed that it would be good for everyone involved.”
you sat there in shock smiling like an idiot at all the effort he had put into being with you as you could feel tears pricking at the corners of your eyes. his hands flew to your face when they began to fall as he wiped them away. “don't get all mushy on me, i promised you we’d be together.” he smiled as you nuzzled into his palm. “i just didn’t know it would work.” taeyong smiled at you except this time it was nervously as he seemed to have something stuck on the tip of his tongue. “you haven't changed your mind, have you?” he smiled sheepishly. “you want this right?” and before he could ramble further you leaned forward and planted your lips on his and he had his answer.
the ringing of bells rang throughout the kingdom as you found yourself nervously pacing around another set of doors. it turned out that taeyong was in fact telling the truth and in almost fairytale style you were getting married. you were nervous as you flattened your dress waiting for your dad to accompany you. it still hadn’t set in that you were getting your happy ending and you couldn’t stop smiling as you imagined what taeyong looked like at the end of the aisle. you didn’t have to imagine for too long as your father arrived and took his place beside you, fixing his tie, before linking your arms with a smile.
the doors slowly opened as you kept your gaze low before raising it just to see both you and taeyong’s families in attendance. and with the cheers that erupted below along the streets and the gazes from everyone standing at their seats, you realized you weren’t the only one excited for the marriage before you. with each step you both took you clutched your bouquet keeping your eyes on everyone but him. the aisle’s end came just as fast as it’s beginning as you finally looked up at him. he looked just as breathtaking as the day you met him. you smiled fondly as your mind was flooded with memories of all the moments you shared as you admired just how amazing he looked with neatly styled hair and a smile wider than yours. and wondered how you and the boy you snuck around the castle with had made it here.
the cheers began again as you two finally kissed, setting the marriage in stone and uniting two forbidden lovers and two warring kingdoms.
