කලාත්මක ඡායාරූපකරණය  මියගියාද ?

“කලාත්මක ඡායාරූපකරණයේ අවසානය”, යන මැයෙන් වූ අන්තර්ජාල සාකච්ඡාවකට මම ඊයේ සහභාගි වුනෙම්. එය Sequel Collective නම් වූ තරුණ කණ්ඩායමක් විසින් සංවිධානය කර තිබූ අතර තාරක බිබුලෙවිතාරණ මෙහෙයවූ මෙම සංකාච්ඡාවේ කතිකයා වූවේ බූපති නලින් ය. ආනන්දයේ ශිෂ්‍යයෙකුව සිටියදී ආනන්දයේ පාසල් ඡායාරූප සංගමයේ සිටි බූපති, පසුව හෑගොඩ ඡායාරූප පාසලේදී ම⁣ගේ දේශන වලට වලට සවන් දුන් ශිෂ්‍යයන් අතරින් අයෙකි. ඡායාරූප ශිල්පියෙකු ලෙස හඳුන්වනවාට වඩා, මා ඔහු ගැන දැන සිටියේ කලාව පිළිබඳ තියුනු ප්‍රතිවිරෝධී අදහස් සහිත විචාරකයෙකු ලෙසය. මා මෙම සාකච්ඡාවට විශේෂයෙන්ම සහබාගි වුනේ ඔහු නිසා වන අතර, ඡායාරූපකරණය පිළිබඳ ඔහුගේ විචාරාත්මක අදහස්, ඡායාරූපකරණය පිළිබඳව ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ නව පරම්පරාවේ අදහස් නියෝජනය වන බව මම විශ්වාස කරමි. එහෙත් සාකච්ඡාව අවසානයේදි ඔහු ප්‍රකාශ කරන්නට උත්සාහ කෙරුවේ කුමක්දැයි මට වටහා ගත නොහැකි විය. ඔහු සාකච්ඡාව අවසානයේද ප්‍රකාශ කර සිටියේ කලාත්මක ඡායාරූපකරණයේ අවසානය සිදුවී හමාර බවත් ඔහු එයින් අදහස් කරන්නේ තාක්ෂණය පිළිබඳ නොවන බවත්ය. එය එසේනම් ඡායාරූපකරණය සහ සමකාළීන සංස්කෘතිය තුළ එහි භූමිකාව පිළිබඳ වන පූර්ව නිගමන නැවත සළකා බැලීමට අපට සිදුවේ. එහෙත් එයට පෙර අප කලාව සහ කලාවේ විවිධ අරමුණ හඳුනා ගත යුතුව ඇත.

ලලිත කලා ඡායාරූපකරණයට සංවාදයක් ඇති කිරීමට, දැනුවත් කිරීමට සහ සමාජ, දේශපාලනික සහ පාරිසරික ගැටළු සම්බන්ධයෙන් විවේචනාත්මක චින්තනය ඇති කිරීමට බලයක් ඇත. ඒ නිසා ඒ හා බැඳුනු අභියෝගවලට මුහුණ දීම සහ සමාජයේ ධනාත්මක වෙනසක් වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී සිටීම සඳහා ඡායාරූපකරණයේ කාර්යභාරය පිළිබඳව ජනතාව සැලකිලිමත් වීම සාමාන්‍ය දෙයකි.

ඊරෝස්ගේ නැතිවූ ඊතලය

සුන්දර වසන්ත දින සන්ධ්‍යාවක, මම ලිවර්පූල්හි සෙෆ්ටන් උද්‍යානයේ ජල මල පසු කරමින් ඇවිද ගියෙමි. එක මොහොතකදි මට දැනෙනවා කවුරුහරි මගේ පිටිපසින් බලනවා මෙන්. මම නැවතී හැරී ආපසු හැරී බැලුවෙමි. දිය මල මුදුනේ, ඊරෝස් මා දෙස බලා සිටියි. ඔහුට ඉහලින් වූ අහසේ, සඳ යම් දෙයකට බිය වී තමාව වසා ගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරමින් සිටියාය. ඊරෝස් අත ඔහුගේ සුපුරුදු ආයුධය වන දුන්න විය. එය මා වෙත ඉලක්ක විය. එහෙත් ඒ තුල රැඳ වූ ඊතලයක් නොවීය. ඊතලය කොහෙද?

Eros' Lost Arrow: A Spring Evening in Sefton Park

On a beautiful spring evening, I strolled past the water fountain in Sefton Park, Liverpool. Suddenly, I felt as though someone were watching me from behind. Halting, I turned to look back. Atop the fountain, Eros gazed down at me. In the sky above, the moon seemed anxious, attempting to shield herself. Eros held his customary weapon, the bow, in his hand, aimed directly at me. Yet, there was no arrow to be found. Where had it disappeared to?

As I pondered, memories from decades past flooded my mind. It was during my teenage years. One day, while traveling to school by train, I encountered Eros. On that fateful day, he took aim with his bow and let loose an arrow that pierced my heart. The pain was unbearable, my heart ceasing to beat after bleeding profusely. The arrow he had shot me with came to rest at the river's deep bottom.

"Eros," I murmured, addressing the deity, "Here I stand in this garden today, after a long journey with my trusted companion by my side. My path nears its end. Soon, darkness will engulf the light. You shall never retrieve your lost arrow."

On a serene spring evening, I wandered through the tranquil pathways of Sefton Park in Liverpool, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of nature's beauty. As the golden hour bathed the landscape in a soft glow, I felt a gentle whisper of inspiration urging me forward.

Suddenly, a feeling of being observed overcame me, prompting a pause in my steps. With a curious glance over my shoulder, I beheld Eros perched atop the fountain, his watchful gaze seemingly fixed upon me. Above, the moon cast a shy veil over herself, as if in anticipation of some unknown event.

In that moment, I raised my camera, framing the scene before me with careful attention to detail. Eros, with his bow poised and the empty space where an arrow should be, became the focal point of my composition. The tranquil waters of the fountain mirrored the enigmatic allure of the evening, inviting reflection upon the passage of time and the echoes of distant memories.

As I snapped the shutter, I couldn't help but recall my own encounter with Eros in the fleeting days of my youth. The sting of his arrow, buried deep within my heart, had left an indelible mark upon my soul, guiding me through the labyrinth of life's experiences.

With each click of the camera, I sought to capture not just the beauty of the present moment, but also the essence of the past that lingered within it. The photograph would serve as a testament to the eternal dance between light and shadow, love and loss, that weaves its way through the tapestry of human existence.

And so, as the last rays of sunlight kissed the horizon and darkness began to envelop the park, I knew that I had captured more than just an image – I had immortalized a fleeting glimpse of eternity, forever preserved in the lens of my camera.

Navigating Buddhism

The portrayal of Buddhism in Sinhala culture often perplexes me. I find myself puzzled by the actions of some individuals who wear robes and share their activities on social media. At times, I respond to this confusion with a mix of humor and sarcasm, even questioning the essence of Buddhism itself.

When asked about my familiarity with Sinhala culture, I sometimes choose not to acknowledge it. Instead, I identify as Sri Lankan, emphasizing Sinhala as my mother tongue. I believe that Siddhartha Gautama's teachings, often termed Buddhism, transcend geographical boundaries, and I resist labeling it within narrow confines.

To me, Buddhism isn't merely a set of rules; it's a way of life that individuals can embrace or reject. Siddhartha Gautama's profound insights into life and death, encapsulated in the concept of Paticcha Samuppada, aimed at alleviating human suffering. His teachings offer a comprehensive guide for navigating life's complexities and fostering societal well-being.

Monks play a crucial role in disseminating Buddhist teachings. However, to qualify for this role, they must adhere to established traditions, which have evolved over centuries to preserve the integrity of Buddhism. These traditions encompass ethical guidelines outlined in the Vinaya, dedicated meditation practice, scriptural study, community service, celibacy, hierarchical adherence, and the cultivation of nonviolence and compassion.

Historically, Sri Lankan monks have wielded influence in both cultural and political spheres, offering counsel to rulers during challenging times. Their wisdom and education have made them significant figures in shaping societal affairs.

The Story of Coffee

A couple of guests came to our house last night. The newlyweds arrived from Medellin, Colombia's second largest city, to spend their honeymoon in Britain. They brought us a unique gift from their hometown, obtained from their workplace. Their gift to our esteemed host was a 500-gram bag of Pergamino coffee. The aroma of coffee gradually permeated the house as they unpacked the bag from their travel luggage, creating a perfect backdrop for our conversation.

Infused with the unique Colombian coffee, memories of a coffee plantation in the garden of my childhood home in Sri Lanka flooded back. The rich and inviting scent made our home feel cosy and content. This post began with a cup of hot coffee brewed from the grounds of that very bag. As the ground coffee dissolved in hot water, I savoured the slightly bitter chocolate caramel flavour and the deep sweetness lingering on my palate. The aroma of the coffee cup and the clean taste on my tongue gave me a profound appreciation for the quality of this Colombian coffee.

Reflecting on my conversation with the two Colombian visitors, several points caught my attention:

Pergamino coffee:

Both of them brought Pergamino coffee, sourced from the Pergamino region of Colombia, renowned for producing the highest quality Arabica coffee beans. Colombia is celebrated for its coffee production, with the Pergamino region playing a significant role in its reputation for exceptional coffee plantations.

Located in the Antioquia region, the city of Pergamino benefits from a favourable climate, high altitude, and fertile soil conditions, which create optimal growing conditions for coffee plants. Elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 metres above sea level contribute to the development of dense, flavorful coffee beans with distinctive characteristics.

Colombian coffees, including Pergamino, are known for their balanced flavours, typically featuring a smooth, medium body with subtle notes of chocolate, nuts, and citrus. Coffee from this region is often distinguished by its bright acidity and clean finish, making it highly sought after among coffee enthusiasts.

Pergamino coffee undergoes various processing methods, including washed, natural, or honey extraction, each imparting unique flavour characteristics to the beans. The processing method significantly influences the final flavour profile of the coffee.

Coffee from Pergamino and other regions in Colombia enjoys high demand in the specialty coffee market due to its consistent quality and distinctive taste. It is often marketed as a single-origin coffee, allowing consumers to appreciate the unique flavours specific to the region.

In conclusion, Pergamino Coffee represents a part of Colombia's rich coffee heritage, offering consumers a delightful coffee experience characterised by exceptional taste and quality.

Coffee culture:

Coffee culture encompasses the social atmosphere, customs, and traditions surrounding coffee consumption worldwide. It encompasses everything from the preparation and customs associated with consuming coffee to the spaces where people gather to enjoy it together.

Coffee has a long history as a central aspect of social interaction in many cultures. Different cultures have their preferred methods of preparing and brewing coffee, such as espresso, pour-over, French press, Turkish coffee, and others, each offering a distinct flavour profile and experience. Many cultures also have specific rituals or traditions associated with drinking coffee, whether it's a morning ritual to start the day or an afternoon gathering with friends.

In Britain, where I reside, coffee culture often revolves around communal spaces like coffee shops, cafes, and specialty coffee shops, providing comfortable environments for socialising or simply enjoying a cup of coffee.

In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for artisanal and specialty coffees worldwide, focusing on high-quality beans, precise brewing techniques, and unique flavour profiles. Coffee holds cultural significance in many societies, with coffee ceremonies playing important roles in hospitality and social customs in some regions.

Moreover, coffee culture is closely linked to creativity and intellectual pursuits, with many writers, artists, and thinkers frequenting coffeehouses as places of inspiration and discussion.

Overall, coffee culture reflects the diverse ways in which coffee is enjoyed, appreciated, and integrated into daily life worldwide.

Finally, the price of the Colombian coffee that my guests brought home is US$18.19. The Colombian coffee market is projected to contribute an additional $813.1 million to Colombia's Gross National Product (GNP) this year, which stood at $343 billion last year and has been steadily growing. Meanwhile, the monthly salary of my guest, who works in the coffee manufacturing industry, is 1,300,606.00 Pesos (equivalent to $333.29 US Dollars).

This image is taken from Sergio Zoro's Instagram page called Cinema Streets, a Mexican digital artist. He is a digital image creator for advertisements. Therefore, this image should not be viewed from a photographic perspective.

This technique is commonly used in sports and wildlife photography to convey a sense of motion and dynamism in a still image.

To achieve a successful panning shot, we capture the subject's movement by using a slow shutter speed and tracking it with the camera. One of the cherished facets of Sri Lankan culture is its traditional dance, encompassing various forms such as upland dance, low country dance, Saparagamu dance, and folk dance. Despite influences from colonial eras, traditional dance remains a significant aspect of modern Sri Lankan cultural expression, finding its place in religious ceremonies, entertainment, and daily life. The Colombo University of Fine Arts plays a pivotal role in preserving this art form, nurturing dancers amidst challenges.

Among those upholding this tradition are Purnima Ratnayake and Prabash Niranga, residents of Liverpool, UK. Trained in dance at the University of Fine Arts in Colombo, they bring with them a wealth of experience from Sri Lanka, including participation in international dance shows and proficiency in Bollywood dance. Despite leaving behind national recognition, their journey to Britain amidst political turmoil speaks of the challenges faced by immigrant artists.

Migration often poses an identity crisis for artists, as they grapple with adapting to new environments while preserving their cultural roots. The expatriate Sri Lankan community, though close-knit, faces its own struggles, with daily life and cultural adaptation often eroding the essence of their heritage. In response, artists like Purnima and Prabhash strive to maintain their connection to art and culture, forming associations to keep their traditions alive in a foreign land.

A Closer Look at the "Dayada" Concert with Indrachap Liyanage

This weekend brought a delightful experience for me with the "Gift" concert in Leicester, where I had the opportunity to reconnect with Indrachapa Liyanage after several decades. Our paths had crossed in our teenage years, with Indrachapa being a schoolmate of my nephew Manuj Diddeniya at Ananda College. Alongside Depalaki Kasun Kalhara, they were part of a musical trio at school, often practicing at Kasun Kalhara's residence on Mahaniyara Road in Gothatuwa, where my house was conveniently nearby. During their rehearsals, Manuj would often bring his friends over, and my wife Suji would graciously feed them, ensuring no hunger was left unattended.

The Sri Lanka Kidney Foundation (SLK Foundation), comprising Sri Lankans in Britain, orchestrated the annual music concert named "Dayada" to support their charitable projects. Since its inception in 2015, this concert has evolved, raising a meager £250 initially but now achieving a remarkable profit of £20,259. This year's success can be attributed to meticulous organizational efforts and the widespread popularity of Indrachapa Liyanage, a rising star in the music industry.

Indrachapa's debut performance in rock vocals at the "Dayada" concert was particularly noteworthy. Originating in the United States in the late 1940s, rock music encompasses various musical influences like rhythm and blues, country, and gospel. Indrachapa's vocal prowess was evident, demonstrating a wide range of tones with powerful and precise delivery. Despite a minor technical glitch with the microphones during the second round, Indrachapa swiftly regained control, captivating the audience with his confidence, charm, and energetic stage presence.

As a consummate artist, Indrachapa infuses each song with emotion and authenticity, delivering theatrical interpretations that resonate deeply with the audience. His physical gestures and interactions with the crowd create an immersive experience, making everyone feel involved in his performance. Indeed, Indrachapa Liyanage emerges as a standout talent in the Sri Lankan music scene, reminiscent of the legendary Chitral Somapala.

In analyzing Indrachapa's vocal delivery and stage presence, it becomes evident that his artistry transcends mere technical proficiency. International Mother Language Day, observed annually on 21 February, celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity while promoting the preservation and promotion of mother tongues worldwide. This day, proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 and commemorated since 2000, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made to protect native languages, notably the Bengali language movement in Bangladesh on 21 February 1952.

The significance of International Mother Language Day lies in its recognition of the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism. It honors those who fought for their mother tongues, highlighting the Bengali movement's impact on Sri Lanka's political landscape.

The introduction of the Sinhala Only Act (Official Language Act No. 33 of 1956) on 5 June 1956 replaced English with Sinhala as Sri Lanka's sole official language. Spearheaded by Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, this policy aimed to promote Sinhala and assert Sinhala cultural dominance. However, it marginalized the Tamil-speaking minority, contributing to ethnic tensions and the Sri Lankan Civil War.

While globalization challenges narrow socio-political attitudes like "Sinhala only," it does not diminish the imperative to preserve mother tongues. UNESCO's list of endangered languages underscores the importance of safeguarding linguistic diversity, including Sinhala.

Sinhala, spoken by approximately 16 million worldwide, holds deep cultural and historical significance. Its evolution, influenced by various factors, has yielded a rich literary tradition. The Sinhala script, comprising 58 basic letters, represents consonant-vowel combinations, with additional diacritics altering pronunciation.

Efforts to save Sinhala require collective action, including language education, bilingualism promotion, cultural festivals, media support, community engagement, and digital initiatives. Advocacy for language rights and documentation of linguistic heritage are essential steps toward preserving Sinhala for future generations.

Over time, I've observed how nations worldwide commemorate their independence, finding common threads in six key aspects: sovereignty, national pride, reflection and gratitude, renewed commitment, cultural expression, and future inspiration.

This occasion fosters a sense of national pride and unity among citizens, transcending differences of religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. It offers a moment to reflect on the nation's history, progress, and ongoing challenges, while expressing gratitude to those who contributed to its freedom and development. Independence Day serves as a reminder of the foundational values upon which the nation stands, such as democracy, equality, and justice, inspiring citizens to renew their dedication to these ideals and work towards a brighter future.

The day is often marked by cultural performances, parades, and festivals that showcase the nation's diversity and heritage. It's an opportunity to celebrate unique traditions, customs, and accomplishments, fostering a collective sense of identity and belonging.

For Sri Lankan immigrants residing in countries like Britain, celebrating Independence Day may seem paradoxical as they commemorate their homeland's freedom from afar. Yet, the cultural and emotional significance of this day remains profound. The Hela Children's Independence Day celebration in Leicester holds particular importance, serving as a tether to Sri Lankan roots, culture, and national identity.

Despite living abroad, this event allows the Sri Lankan community to reflect on their homeland's history, struggles, achievements, and cultural bonds. Moreover, it provides a platform for community cohesion, strengthening ties and preserving cultural heritage. Importantly, celebrating Independence Day abroad doesn't diminish appreciation for the host country but rather reflects the complex layers of cultural and national identity carried by individuals.

I had the opportunity to witness the Hela Children's Independence Day celebrations in Leicester from the backstage last weekend. Despite the anticipation for a remarkable event, distractions arose, including a woman live-streaming on her phone in the audience, diverting attention from the performance.

My initial encounter with the Hela Children Art Institute occurred about a year ago during their staging of "Patachara" in Leicester, a significant production within the Sinhala immigrant community in Britain. Led by Mrs. Madhuka Fadinand and veteran drummer Mr. Aruna Shanta, the Hela Praduo Kalaya Institute in Leicester stands out for its remarkable dedication from both children and parents, a rarity within the Sri Lankan diaspora in Britain.

During last weekend's event organized by the Hela Children's Art Institute, children showcased their talents through traditional dance performances, including the Pahiyanpat festival and Updara dance art. The dedication and effort of these young performers and their parents were evident, culminating in a memorable evening at the Beaumont Lace School Hall.

However, certain aspects of the event fell short, such as the lengthy duration and poor presentation by the announcers, detracting from the overall experience. Inappropriate language used by one announcer further marred the occasion, highlighting the need for more respectful and engaging communication.

Despite these shortcomings, the event underscored Mrs. Madhuka Fadinand's leadership, commitment, and unwavering advocacy for traditional dance. However, there's room for improvement in the curation and execution of future events to ensure they effectively showcase the talents and contributions of all participants.

Echoes of the Road

The photograph depicts the A50, a vital thoroughfare connecting the cities of Warrington and Leicester in Britain. This particular image captures a common sight near a temporary parking lot along this bustling road, frequented by thousands of vehicles daily. Driving along this route, the reflection in my rearview mirror evoked a profound sense of awe within me.

In the frame, a fence runs along the left side, separating the lanes, while a row of small trees divides the road, leading the eye from the center to the right in a semi-circle. The dimly lit forest on either side, with clouds drifting between light and shadow, painted a captivating tableau in my mind.

My decision to capture this scene stemmed from the personal resonance it evoked. Photography, as an art form, often freezes moments that deeply affect the photographer emotionally or personally.

The advent of artificial intelligence has undeniably altered the landscape of photography. AI-powered tools now offer assistance with various tasks, from editing to suggesting compositions. However, the essence of photography, rooted in capturing moments that hold significance for the photographer, remains unchanged.

While AI can undoubtedly enhance certain aspects of photography, it cannot replicate the emotional connection or subjective interpretation that a photographer brings to their work. My choice to capture the scene described above was driven by my unique perspective and appreciation for the beauty I witnessed, something that AI cannot mimic.

In conclusion, while AI may shape the practice of photography, it cannot diminish the individual inspiration and creativity that motivate photographers to document the world around them. My decision to photograph that specific composition reflects my personal experience and artistic vision, transcending any technical influence.

Journey Towards Timorese Independence

During my tenure as an international media photographer in Sri Lanka, I crossed paths with Freddy Gamage, a Catholic journalist and social activist, on a strictly professional level. Our encounters were rooted in the shared field of social activism, where Freddy tirelessly championed various causes. While our interactions were primarily within the realms of work, a mutual respect and understanding developed between us over time.

Freddy's commitment to social causes extended beyond mere rhetoric; he actively participated in grassroots movements, often alongside just a handful of individuals. Despite the seeming insignificance of these gatherings in terms of news coverage, Freddy remained undeterred, driven solely by his sense of duty and personal conviction.

In November, Freddy paid me a visit at my home in Liverpool. During his brief stay, he learned of my mother's battle with cancer and graciously offered to carry high-nutrition milk powder to her upon his return to Sri Lanka. True to his word, he delivered the much-needed supplies to my mother promptly upon his arrival.

However, Freddy's altruism knew no bounds. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on a journey to East Timor, where he had been invited by President Ramos Horta to receive a state award. Despite the geographical distance and cultural disparities, Freddy's efforts in supporting East Timor's struggle for independence had not gone unnoticed. In a momentous ceremony, he was bestowed with Timor-Leste's highest national honor, a testament to his pivotal role in the nation's path to freedom.

Freddy's involvement in the Timorese independence movement traces back to his time in the Philippines during the late 1980s and early 1990s. There, he collaborated with advocacy groups fighting against Indonesian occupation, laying the groundwork for his later endeavors in Sri Lanka under the banner of "Friends of the Third World of East Timor." Despite the challenges and the modest turnout at events, Freddy remained steadfast in his advocacy, drawing international attention to East Timor's plight.

One defining moment that encapsulated Freddy's unwavering dedication occurred in 1994 at Manila airport. His arrest by Philippine authorities while en route to a conference not only sparked international outcry but also provided a platform for him to amplify the Timorese cause. His impassioned speech, delivered amidst adversity, reverberated across global media channels, reigniting support for East Timor's struggle for independence.

In 2002, Freddy's contributions were officially recognized by the newly formed Timorese government, underscoring his instrumental role in their journey to independence.
