If you’re struggling. You need to read this. When my mom was 16, her best friend committed suicide. My mother is a superstitious person, and the day she found out was the only day she ever put shoes on her bed. She goes to visit the grave on her friends birthday every year, named me after her too. Death of a love one hurts and it isn’t beautiful. When I was fourteen my uncle hung himself in his garage. My aunt stayed by the hospital bed of her brain dead husband for days, didn’t sleep or eat. Couldn’t take care of her children. His four year old daughter asked me where her daddy was. And I didn’t have an answer. Suicide is not beautiful. Growing up my favorite person in the whole world, my papa, struggled with alcoholism. My mom sat me down and told me if I go with papa and he drinks ANYTHING I need to call her and have her pick me up. The only person I’d ever felt safe around, I had to suddenly be careful. Addiction is not beautiful. When I was five years old my mom was in the hospital, and she missed my birthday. When I was ten, she was in the hospital again. She spent almost a month in the ICU and I didn’t know if she’d survive or not. Hospitals and illness are not poetic. My first girlfriend had an eating disorder. You couldn’t get her to eat, and if you did shed throw it up after. She lost so much weight and everyone thought she was just getting in shape. But she hated the way she looked, even when her ribs poked out and shed pass out from too much. Eating disorders are not pretty. When I was 15 years old, one of my friends who never cried, cried and told the principal that I was planning to overdose. Half my class was in tears, Because they believed I wasn’t coming back. My best friend cried, that was the only time I ever saw him cry. My mom looked at me with more sadness and hollowness than I’ve ever seen on anyone’s face. And me? I made the cops laugh as they drove me to the mental institution to admit me for attempted suicide. Mental disorders are not beautiful. When I was 16 my younger friend, only 13, came upstairs during his own birthday party bleeding from cuts because he was overwhelmed. I told his mom I was sorry, sorry because she had the same look id seen on my mom the year before. Sorry because he was so much younger, had so much to live for. Self harm is not beautiful. We are not Angels. We are not going home. We are people. Damaged people. Don’t wait until we’re hashtags, don’t wait until we’re gravestones, don’t wait until we’re memories, don’t give up hope. We’re people, were a little broken. We need help. Help us before we lose. Before we are stolen.
