If you are three square meals a day every day on time without interruption, it’s not implausible that you might go a pretty long time without noticing that you’re incapable of feeling hunger, that unlike other people you just never feel “hungry”.
In fact, seeing as how we’re all SUPPOSED to eat three meals a day to stay healthy, it might take a pretty big thing for you to even get the chance to notice that “hunger” isn’t something your body does.
Given the right circumstances in fact, a fifty year old who cannot feel hunger might go on a camping trip, get lost in the woods, and be on day three of wandering around without food before the lack of that sensation ever occurs to them as odd for the very first time.
Which is probably a very similar experience to people who don’t realize they’re trans, asexual, gay, queer, intersex, mildly colourblind, allergic to beets, whatever, and why it probably shouldn’t shock and surprise us so much when a 65 year old retiree comes out as queer or vehemently defends the idea that potatoes are spicy
Which I conflate in this hypothetical because it really does highlight the exaggerated value we place on one realization vs the other

Fun fact 1: Antidepressants, ADHD medication, and being autistic can all cause a person to have a lower tolerance to heat
Fun fact 2: Heat can make your heart beat faster as it attempts to cool your body down
If your chest starts to feel weird, you feel dizzy, nauseous, or are having panicky sensations without necessarily being anxious, try to find somewhere to sit and cool down, ideally with a cold drink (and let someone know if you can). Heat sensitivity is no joke.

yesterday i was taking a guest’s order and they were staring at the menu and the question they asked stunned me into silence and has been burned into my brain for life and i will present it to you verbatim today. they looked at the menu and turned to me and asked “so like, the more we get, the more expensive it is? is that how it works?”

Okay so I've noticed this... Tone amongst the conversation tags and messages I'm getting and even in my personal life, so I want to clarify this:
Stop willingly giving grace to racism.
Stop willingly giving grace to "nice" racism.
Every time you catch yourself going "well at least they-" I want you to pause and notice what you're doing. It's not to say that you have to be mean (or that you can't be angry!!) or that you cannot have the thought! Obviously every situation is not the same, and you need to use your discernment.
But I ALSO want you to realize that you, in no uncertain terms, do not have to "give it to someone" just because they didn't call someone a slur. No, I wouldn't "prefer" racism while polite because I'd rather not experience it at all. And also, tbh, I find the Polite Racists™ far more dangerous. Too many people think someone saying a lot of words while 😁 means it's the truth, that if it's Nice it couldn't possibly be malicious. That could not be further from the truth. There are politicians that smile brightly at babies and vote for death camps the next minute.
Be honest with yourself. Recognize what you're allowing, recognize that sometimes you DO have a choice to not let things slide, and when you DON'T have a choice, you do NOT have to say "well at least it's not worse". 😐 ESPECIALLY if you're not the target of said bigotry! Racism is already normalized in our society, you do NOT have to do your part to contribute by acquiescing to it.

I really do think life is a series of watching other people walk through doors you can't follow them through. I've been thinking about it lately when it comes to marriage---my sister got married recently, and my brother before her, and while the occasions were joyful and I was happy for both of them, it was also like standing in mission control. Or maybe not even that, maybe the 'friends & family' section of the tarmac, several miles from the launch pad entirely. Waving as this intrepid astronaut (the one you would have sworn you knew as well as you know yourself, because you share so much and it lingers in your skin) climbed into a shuttle, jetted off into the darkness.
And then, the person who came back was....different. Not bad different! (Sometimes they come back better, this is also decidedly strange.) Just....different. They have gone somewhere you can't follow, seen and experienced things you will never be privy to. They will go back to that dark, unknown and unknowable country again, once the holiday or other familial obligation is over. And so you spend some time talking to them, nodding and smiling on autopilot while you quietly wonder, did they do that before, and I just didn't notice? Is that new? I don't remember that. I can't remember if---
It's a very strange experience, to be confronted with the fact that people exist outside of you, even those who share 99.99% of your DNA.

Truly one of the oddest feelings is reading a fic that is so out of character but the writing and plot is so compelling. Like yeah I came here for the characters but yeah you know what I will read your original novel with the serial numbers plastered on
