it turns out a lot of people are actually on the same page about whether or not they'd work if they didn't have to earn money, we just all seem to have wildly different definitions of what counts as work. i'll see one person say "of course i would, i'd still want to create art and volunteer in my local community" and another say "hell no i wouldn't, i'd quit work and just create art and volunteer in my local community" and then they look at eachother like they said something incomprehensible.

It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:

It is a physical activity done with one or more partners

You should only go rock climbing with people you trust to not let you fall

You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making

Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35 and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are

While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma

There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.

For some people it is a deep and moving personal experience.

historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexor injury" before participating when perhaps I should have 😔

thinking once again about how Martyn and Grian were such perfect foils in third life without even trying. Literally beat for beat, they were perfect opposite mirrors of each other

Both ended up in a role serving someone else. Grian unwillingly due to an accident. Martyn happily due to his own choice

Both stayed in their respective right-hand-man roles for the entire season. Grian viewed his situation as an unhappy one and was looking forward to leaving Scar, but still acted as his loyal ally the whole time. Martyn viewed his situation as perfectly acceptable and beneficial, but still planned to betray Ren at some point

Grian never meant to betray Scar, but ended up killing him. Martyn meant to betray Ren, but ended up dying by his side instead

A pride month post, about how you might not know that you know exactly how to relate to people who aren’t like you.

I get that it's weird to even imagine that there can be asexual or aromantic people. Like, what the hell? You mean there are people who know what attraction is, and in some cases can even feel it on a very low level—enough to follow along with love stories or accidentally mistake a friendship for a crush, but not enough to feel what nearly everyone feels when they have that first kiss, or read that first spicy text? Even if that inability to feel a thing makes sense on some level, how the hell can everyone else possibly relate to it? How do you relate to someone else not feeling something you can feel?

Well. Ever been to a park with a dog, or been in a backyard with a cat? Nature smells nice. There's something soul-filling about the way forests and fields and lakes and rivers smell, especially after the soil has been woken up by summer rain. But you know that you've never smelled the world the way a cat or a dog will. You know that you've never sensed a tree radiating with pheromones like the tree was its own social media platform, and you've never smelled how good a snack bar really does smell, even through the wrapper. You have a sense of smell, and you can imagine that following a person's scent trail must be something like following the scent of your favourite food to the kitchen, but you know that you will never truly experience a sense of smell the way a cat or dog will.

It's like that. That’s how to relate to an asexual or aromantic person. Really, that's also how to relate to anyone who isn't as attracted to a gender that you're attracted to. "How can you see that and not find that hot?" The same way you can be on a walk with a dog and not need to stop and smell that juniper tree that's just covered in interesting pheromone gossip.
