Fear Street Prom Queen thoughts as I watch it.

(EDIT: having finished it...uhhh, yeah. I have watched the original trilogy more times than I can count. Like I will literally finish 1666 and start again on 1994. This one...isn't worth watching.) Full thoughts (spoilers included) under the cut.

Exposition character intros are the WORST. Surely there has to be a more interesting way of introducing everyone without a walk through the hallway with some bland narration?

Going to give credit to the fakeout though. But also it not being a fakeout probably would have been more interesting.

MC's family past sounds interesting but currently not enough to add much dimension to an otherwise generic character

Have just checked and yep, not directed by Leigh Janiak. You can tell it's missing that something special. It's also got this very jerky feel to it, with strange jumps and cuts. It's also got way more of a male gaze view than the previous trilogy. Like, what is that swimsuit thing?

Oh good. The most interesting character gets killed first. Now we're left with a bunch of very typical prom queens and I do not care if they get killed or not.

MC's crush on generic dude is boring me.

Look, an 80s prom slasher is one of my favourite genres of horror, why are you fucking it up so badly

Again, the directing is...odd. Not sure about the placement of the flashbacks either. The whole thing feels too much like telling us, rather than showing us anything.

Second girl's dead and I don't even care. The great thing about the original trilogy was that you did care when someone died. Even Heather in 1994, who we barely got to know, we still learned enough about to her to want her to survive.

I will give kudos to some of the more interesting kills though. The paper slicer was pretty good but no patch on the bread cutter from the original trilogy. Another fake out. I WANT A SEVERED HEAD IN A PUNCH BOWL. I think we lose a lot of tension by none of the characters knowing there's a killer about until very near the end. It means we're watching some very trite drama mixed in with secondary characters getting killed abruptly.

Oh God, can I just skip this mean girl why are you looking at my boyfriend shit. And the MC is such a wet weekend, geez.

Yeah, I am genuinely skipping chunks now.

Skipped through the last half an hour because I just want it to end. Megan would have been a way more interesting final girl. Sorry, Lori you should have died, that's how little I care about you. Red herrings are red herring-y. And they probably all would have been better than what we got. Stabbing with the prom crown was pretty good.

The end would have been interesting except for that fake out again where hey, Tiffany is evil too! That really sapped any remaining interest I had left. WHERE ARE MY LESBIANS. THIS IS FEAR STREET, WHAT THE FUCK

I...really don't know what to make of this. We had a few Easter eggs towards the original trilogy but this is very little more than a generic slasher. This doesn't feel like fear street. The characters are cardboard cut outs and I feel nothing when they die, the plot-line is bland and full of holes, there's not even any mention of the curse or past killers to even tie it in. And the reveal of the mark after the credits means nothing. If Nancy killed Lori's dad, was she always evil? Was the entire family cursed to be killers? Who is the Sheriff and which Goode is cursing them as Nick's dad was confirmed to have died in 1978? To make matters worse, the kills look cheesy and fake. There's nothing redeemable about this installment in the franchise at all. And it could have, should have, been great. I haven't read the original book but wow...it can't be as bad as this.

Rating: Ziggy Berman disapproves.

ok so watched the new fear street a couple hours ago and is this a safe place to say that it kinda sucked? like it was good but it was too overhyped. i had high hopes for it too bc the other 3 movies were so good but this one was just..boring? it just felt like your average horror movie and it was way to predictable. i also feel like arianna greenblatt would be so good in horror but this film just didn’t do her justice. ok bye im going to sleep😣😛

Fear street: prom queen spoilers!!!

The movie was SO cliché, and not even in a good way. It wasn't a fun 80's slasher!! It didn't hive 80's at all to me.

The deaths looked cheap! Also, it just felt like it was trying to be funny? But it just came off as bad writing. Like the principle arriving his arm being copped off and saying "wowzers" when looking at his arm.

Then the handless guy trying to open a door then dying when his face gets smashed? Rather than when he gets 2 hands cut off?? (Obviously would be an instant death but the sheer pain from attempting to open the door with severed hands would be heinous)

The deaths also just LOOKED fake (im not a whore for gore, but they were SO BAD). The deaths were funny even though the movie obviously didnt want them to be.

None of the characters but Lori and her best friend had depth. I was really hoping Tiffany would have some type of depth but no 😭 literally could see her plot line from the start.

Same with the parents. Immediately suspected them when we saw the on screen then confirmed my suspicions when there was 2 killers.

Genuinely could been a whole ass movie unrelated to the fear street series. Didn't include the curse at all other than in corny lines like "this was worse than 78" and "shadyside won't ever change." Then the symbol in the mother's blood.

Which doesn't seem really tell what so ever?? How does the curse involve them?? Genuinely so dumb!

Pillow princesses are not selfish!!! You are not entitled to anything from them! Calling pillow princesses selfish or fake gays is gross. Some should not have to touch you to prove they are gay!

Pillow princesses are just as gay as you! They do not need to prove their queerness!! Saying "oh your not gay if you don't want to [insert sexual act]" reflects the same rhetoric that assulters use like "oh you don't love me if you don't do [insert sexual act]" it's grimy!

Invalidating someone's sexuality cause of thie sexual preferences is odd!! You do NOT know what they person went through. Often, people who are pillow princesses have experienced SA or other types of trama! And even if they haven't it does not matter! Expecting a person to perform sexual acts on you when they don't want to is weird!!

Same goes for stone tops! Bragging about "turning" stone tops is odd!! They don't owe you their body!!

Jackie Taylor was never mean!!

Her telling shauna to 'wear the boob dress' or pushing her to do things isn't because she was mean & didn't think of shauna it's because jackie knows shauna doesn't take initiative.

Her pushing shauna to do cerian things, or deciding things for her, like their room colors at college, isn't cause she doesn't care about Shaunas imput it's cause shauna has established she won't say anything, she will never choose anything for herself.

Even if it isn't properly executed, her taking the initiative for everything in their friendship is her way of caring for shauna.

Shauna was too blinded by jealousy to see that. If shauna ever spoke up, jackie would have apologized and changed her ways immediately.
