In light of something I found out about through TikTok… ARE SOME OF YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS???

Here’s the context: Apparently, people are bookbinding fics and selling them on Etsy. Nice, right? Not even remotely. A lot of AO3 authors have been forced to remove their work from the site out of fear of a lawsuit, because (newsflash!) YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO PROFIT OFF OF A MEDIA THAT WASN’T CREATED BY YOU!!! THAT IS CALLED COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!!

This is why fanfics are free. Authors don’t do this shit for profits. It’s a hobby. It’s supposed to be fun. The only thing we’re getting out of this is enjoyment of sharing works with members of our community. We do this ‘cuz we love y’all!

But you know what doesn’t make it fun? When people not only steal our work, but try to profit off of it and risk putting us in legal trouble!!! If you love a fic author’s work so much that you’d want a physical copy of it, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU PROCEED TO MAKE THEIR LIFE A FUCKING NIGHTMARE?!?!

So, let me tell you, if you bookbind fics as a hobby, that’s great! Y’all are amazing and creative, and I’d love to see your collections sometime, because I genuinely think that is so freaking cool.

If you bookbind fics to make money, die a million deaths, and I’ll see you in the deepest pits of Hell. You are the capitalist spawn that suck the creativity from the world and kill what little magic humanity has left to offer. I wish you nothing but suffering for taking advantage of one of fandom’s most widely-used creative outlets.

That being said, if you are an Etsy user and you find someone selling bookbound fanfics, report them. And if you are a bookbinder considering profiting of of our work and getting us in legal trouble, don’t.
