My love’s birthday is approaching, and he still impresses me. Almost nine years ago, I said: “Whoever can beat me at the game I invent will get my time.” So, I invented a poker-style card game.

No one beat me in those nine years. I don’t think I had ever met anyone who truly enjoyed puzzles or board games. And I was sure I wanted to find someone very intelligent and mentally agile.

Two years before I graduated from college, I met Jass. I thought he wasn’t that smart, so I challenged him just to play — to play my card game.

I didn’t explain any of the rules to him...

And… Jass beat me. At my own game.

The one no one had ever beaten me at.I smiled, and I was surprised.

I knew there was something about him — something different from everyone else. He was smarter than he looked...
