“Wait,” Mina paused as a frown formed, “so you and Sawyer are together now? Or are you just sort of together?” Though she had had some rocky relationships in the past, this seemed to be a whole other world of confusion. Looking down, she ran her fingers through her own hair as she tried to think of what to say to him. Was she even qualified to give him advice? “Okay, so you two are just acting like it never even happened? That’s not exactly healthy…”
Chenglei turned his head to Mina, even if it was still pillowed against his arms, though he sat up a moment later and raised his eyebrows. “...Yes,” he confirmed, blinking a few times at what she had said next and realizing just how right she was. Still, he made a face and sighed, “We’re not acting like it never happened. I mean, I’m not. We just haven’t talked about it. Or talked at all. With each other.”

“Wow,” the soft word fell passed Mina’s lips, not immediately accompanied by any other sound. There really wasn’t anything else that she could think to say. Clearly, Chenglei had gone through a lot in the last few months, and with more than one person. She wasn’t sure if there was any advice that she could actually offer him. Maybe it would be best to just help him better understand his feelings about it all. “And what do you think about all of that? The kiss and the hooking up and everything, I mean. Do you want those to go anywhere, or are you feeling a bit regretful?”
“Well, actually, neither of those things were initiated by me,” Chenglei clarified, laughing softly as he glanced across the table between them. He thought briefly before he leaned forward onto the table and ruffled at his hair, sighing as he looked upward in some attempt of phrasing his Korean. “I just--- I don’t know. Things seem good with Sawyer, but I didn’t tell him about Wren. Should I? I mean, we weren’t technically together when it happened, so --- should I tell him at all?” he sucked in a small amount of air and looked at Mina, making sure to stop himself before he asked way too many questions. “I haven’t even talked to Wren since it happened. Or before it happened, actually. I barely remember him leaving.”

Even though it was still early in the year, it wasn’t surprising Sawyer had already found himself in the library to study and make sure he was always up to date on his classes. With it being his final year, he’d much rather pass it without being held back considering he knew that was possibility. Today he had unsurprising company, wanted rather than not; which was rare. Still, it was slightly distracting having Chenglei across from him, causing Sawyer to look up and over at him every few seconds. “Moving? Is that alright with you?” The younger responded to the sudden question. Getting too distracted from the other wasn’t good for what he was trying to do, and with that he’d decided to call it in for the day as he moved himself around the table and sat himself down next to Chenglei– instead of sitting across. “You haven’t done anything for that past ten minutes. What are you having trouble with?”
Chenglei closed his mouth, which had been opened completely on its own and had ended up making the elder look like an idiot (when did he not?) before he noticed and pursed his lips, flushing as he spoke again, “Oh. Right, yeah,” he mumbled absentmindedly and sighed, glancing at his computer again before he turned to Sawyer once he was seated beside him. “I haven’t written a single piece of music all summer. It’s not even summer anymore, so I can’t use that excuse. I seriously didn’t do a single thing over the summer. With all the free time we had?” Chenglei whined, unsurprisingly, and he slouched a bit in his chair, literally pouting at his computer --- the only thing he really felt he could do. “I have no motivation or anything and I want to die,” he grumbled, head falling onto the back of the chair.

Sawyer nodded in response to the elders statement, agreeing with what he’d said considering he was thinking the same thing. The more they talked it though now, the easier things should be in the long run given their relationship lasts this time. That was probably one of the more major worries, if they’d last this time round or not, and if they didn’t then it was probably safe to say it wasn’t gonna work in the first place. That was a thought Sawyer pushed to the back of his mind though, he didn’t need to think about that right now, not when they were finally on good terms with each other and discussing what they were right now. Chenglei’s next actions took him slightly by surprise, but pulled a groan from his lips as he watched the actions from the younger and accompanying sound effects. “Really?” He rolled his eyes, allowing Chenglei to stay how he was right now though. “Don’t get used to it, I’m only being nice because it’s your birthday.” Sawyer chuckled quietly, a small smile tugging at his lips despite his words. It didn’t last long before Sawyer returned it to the former blank state as he deadpanned. “No.”
Chenglei frowned at Sawyer and he stuck his lip out, his chin crinkling with the face he’d made at the younger. “I don’t know if I should be thankful for that or not,” he mumbled. Scoffing at the other’s words, Chenglei let go of his hands and pushed himself away from Sawyer, looking disgustingly offended at what he’d just heard. He knew it was a joke, of course, but when was Chenglei not offended by something Sawyer said? “What happened to being nice because it’s my birthday?” he pouted again and his shoulders visibly slouched, the elder curling into himself as he watched Sawyer from a much more generous distance, though he was still close. “Are you going to make me jump through hoops to get you to say yes?” Chenglei raised his eyebrows before he pursed his lips stubbornly and tugged at Sawyer’s shirt, attempting to pull him back over even though he was the one to push them both apart. “Kiss me again,” he stated boldly, though some of it came out as a small whine, again referring to when they were back on the trip in France. Chenglei raised his eyebrows slightly, a subtle smirk playing on his lips as he blinked a few more times, adamant on using today’s date as his excuse for god knows what until it was over, “it’s my birthday.”

“Both of our years are going to be rougher this time around if we go though with it, but I think.. I think that it’s already been decided for us.” He licked over his lips, glancing away from the elder and continuing on, “that last time we started fighting, we didn’t know how to deal with it. That wasn’t out fault and we probably handled it badly.” Sawyer looked down to watch as Chenglei linked their hands together, feeling comfort in the familiar gesture really. “There’s that, and we should probably tell each other this time if anythings up or we need to have time to ourselves. Talking. That’s something we didn’t do last time, we kind of let ourselves fall apart.” He hummed, thinking back on how they’d acted when this had happened back when they’d first started fighting. They weren’t exactly much younger then, but they didn’t seem to know how to handle what was happening which was probably their own flaw that they could work on. “We know what we’re walking into this time anyway, and we know the possible outcome sure. But I think because of that it’ll make things easier, right? And I deal with you because I want to. Honestly, either way I think we know that we’ll go through with this considering I don’t think we can do friends like we’ve both stated already, and avoiding each other doesn’t seem like an option either.”
“Well, yeah,” he mumbled, the slightest of smiles tugging at the boy’s lips. “We’re definitely going through with it, but it’s better we at least talk about some of this first. Whatever this is,” he nodded, referring to the current conversation they were having. Talking things through would make things a lot easier, that’s for sure --- or at least they would be for Chenglei, because he couldn’t just rush through them getting back together, even if wanted to. He wanted to be reassured that they’d be able to work things out. The thought of him screwing up everything again was very apparent in his mind, even if their break up before wasn’t really either of their faults, but he kept that to himself. They were still making some sort of progress. Chenglei swallowed and nodded at Sawyer, though he quickly smiled and shifted again so he could wrap his arms around the younger, awwwing stupidly at a particular thing he’d heard. “I think that’s the nicest thing you’ve said to me,” he mumbled exaggeratedly, his hands hooking around the back of Sawyer’s neck and his eyebrows raising from the bright expression on his face. “So," he exhaled, narrowing his eyes only slightly. "Are you my boyfriend again?”

Eyes moving over the words in her novel, Melody was hardly paying any attention to anything and anyone around her. She didn’t even know how much time had passed since the time she sat down in her current spot, if she looked up for a moment at the time, she wouldn’t be surprised if a few hours had gone and passed. The young girl was getting to a good part in the novel when, flipping a page, she heard a voice speaking her in direction. Her eyes widening in surprise and hope that he hadn’t been trying to get her attention for very long. She looked up from her book, marking her place with her finger, “R-reading.” She replied, glancing at her novel, trying to understand how the answer wasn’t already obvious.
“What is it about?” Chenglei raised his eyebrows, actually interested in whatever the girl was reading because possibly the writing would give him some sort muse for the music he was composing; a story. She seemed very focused on the book too, which was always good sign, right? Though with that, Chenglei realized maybe it wasn’t such a great idea for him to interrupt. He cleared his throat a bit and tried to sit back so he didn’t look so... intense? “Oh, um, sorry,” he muttered, blinking a few times and flushing lightly, his eyes staying on the girl but they did look more downcast now. “You were in the middle of that, I didn’t mean to---”

If Sawyer had known this moment would be this hard to have with Chenglei, getting onto the subject wasn’t hard but now they were on it it was difficult to deal with, but if he’d known beforehand he’d probably have avoided even getting onto this topic of conversation. He’d have tried to stay off as long as he could to avoid just dealing with Chenglei right now. It wasn’t a bad thing, but with the way the elder was being about it, it was kind making the younger a little more than frustrated at him. “God..” He groaned when the elder finally at least said it, though not in the way that would’ve been easiest for him but at least he’d said. “Yes, there thank you. That’s the only topic that needed clearing up.” Sawyer rolled his eyes at the other, his frustration level still somewhat high but at least they’d gotten that question over with, albeit a little more difficultly that it should’ve been courtesy of Chenglei of course. “What stuf– ah, that stuff.” He shifted around slightly, sighing at the question because of course now they had to get onto the more complicated parts– though he was sure they probably shouldn’t have been having that conversation on the elders birthday but apparently that was slipping their minds right now. “We’ll deal with it better than we did last time, because apparently even that failed. We’ll work on our communication skills.”
“We can’t just say so and everything will be alright,” Chenglei sighed, raising his eyebrows at Sawyer before he shifted a bit again and looked down at their hands. “This year is probably going to be rougher than the last, and I don’t... If we start fighting again it’ll just get worse. I don’t want that to happen,” he spoke out slowly and fumbled with the blanket in his lap before reaching out his arm to grab Sawyer’s hand, purely on instinct. “Is there anything we can actually do?” Chenglei lifted his head this time and squeezed at the younger’s hand that was now in his grasp, his fingers slipping into the spaces between Sawyer’s. “There’s that whole thing about having already been through it, so we should be easier to notice things if they’re off or something, right? I just --- I don’t,” he paused briefly, looking away again and licking over his lips. “I don’t want to walk right into the same thing that tore us apart before knowing we could have prevented it. It’d make everything we’ve just gone through literally pointless---” The elder stopped himself from going on further and he sighed, his head going back to resting half on the couch and half on Sawyer, huffing out a soft laugh once he was settled. “I don’t want to make things harder for us. I mean, you already deal with me, so.”

“A little bit. Sunnie wanted us to practice while we were there, but I got the chance to see a lot of the sights,” she explained before adjusting herself in the seat to lean in closer. Waiting for him to finish his short story, Mina just nodded along to his words, taking them in. Sawyer and Wren were both exes of his, if she remembered correctly. Or maybe they were just ex-crushes? She couldn’t remember, but there were feelings somewhere. That had to have been stressful for him. “Did you two make up yet? It’s not healthy to have negative feelings harbored up like that, you know.” Though she wanted to ask more about what had happened, she decided not to push him. “How did that go? I mean, with Wren?”
“Seven months of no talking can bring a lot of different feelings,” Chenglei mumbled lowly, though the expression on his face was brighter than before. He hesitated briefly before nodding at Mina and smiling, nervously, but it was still there. “He may have... kissed me, so---” the younger nodded, eyes wavering in front of him. His words were choppy but he spoke up again quickly, “We’re just, um, talking about it now. I mean,” Chenglei sighed heavily, making a face at himself before lifting his head back up to meet Mina’s gaze. “Wren? We kind of... Ithinkwemighthavehookedup,” he rushed out, but at least he’d actually said it. Finally.

The sophomore sighed exasperatedly and leaned back into the chair he was already slouched in before raising his head, nodding in acknowledgement to the person closest to him after he’d stopped tapping on his laptop. Chenglei wasn’t exactly sure what he was aiming to say, but he did know he was trying to find some sort of inspiration for the piece of music he was in the midst of. He could have rethought his question a bit, but his head didn’t really seem to think of that, only blurting out the first thing that came to mind, his eyebrows raising as he sat up. “What are you doing?”

“It just is. Don’t question me.” Sawyer countered, rolling his eyes becuase his explanation came off as stubborn, but when did it not? When did anything the younger said, not come off as stubborn, that was the question. Glancing over once again at the elder, Sawyer had look away because of the face he was met with. The pout of Chenglei’s face doing nothing but further heighten his amusement at the situation and how much harder Chenglei was making it to begin with. “Oh my god, Chenglei. You’re the one that brought the topic up. We’re talking about us, and there is a question you’re kind of blatantly walking around and if you ask it then you don’t need to get so confused.. I swear..” Sawyer rolled his eyes once more at the elder. If only they could get through this without, well, this happening. “Well that’s you’re own fault, you need to think in Korean right now. Or think in Chinese then talk in Korean. Make everything even more harder than you’re already making it.”
Sawyer was right. He was making everything way harder than it needed to be, though that was just Chenglei being Chenglei. He never meant to make things harder, but more often than not, it happened like that anyway. The elder sighed heavily and frowned, though he wasn’t sad, no --- the two of them were the most intimate than they’d been in months right now. Hell, they probably could have give each other some room to breathe with the way they were sitting; they were practically intertwined with one another, but there was no denying they looked comfortable. Chenglei tapped at Sawyer’s hand and he pursed his lips, the look on his face easily telling that whatever came out of the boy’s mouth next would be a whine, “It’s awkward.” No, he was making it awkward. “I don’t want to just---” Chenglei groaned, all but slumping further into the couch and against Sawyer as well. “What, are you waiting for me to ask you to be my boyfriend?” he tilted his head and blinked up at the younger beside him, his eyebrows raising. “Neither of us wants to, but still, we should,” Chenglei mumbled, gesturing uselessly as he attempted to push himself back up somewhat, but he was still very much close to the other. “We should talk about... stuff.” He made a small face at his choice of words though his expression soon went neutral and he watched Sawyer more closely, “What if we start fighting again?”

“Whatever, if you take confessions overall into consideration then that’s that.” Sawyer gave a casual shrug. They’d both confessed an equal amount if they were counting before the trip as well as during it, which was what he was doing because it was easier here. And now Chenglei knew about the English confession. “I barely remember what I say, so even if I were to tell you I couldn’t. So I’ll be cruel and leave you curious.” He smirked a little, eyes flickering over the the screen in front of the briefly before back over at Chenglei. “I know you do, it’s amusing for me to watch– though annoying but when are you not.” Sawyer took no care in filtering his words, fading back into his somewhat insults that he’d liked to throw at the older when they were together before. “Chenglei, that’s a stupid question. I kissed you first I think you now what I want us to be. But I’m not asking the question on it, you’re the older one here.
Chenglei made a face at Sawyer’s smirk instead of responding, a huff leaving his lips too as the younger spoke, “How is something amusing and annoying at the same time?” They were quickly slipping back into the way they almost always communicated with each other; Sawyer teased and Chenglei whined. Without realizing, the elder had ended up with a subtle pout on his face, though it wasn’t a surprise. It was practically his default look. Chenglei let Sawyer finish though, only scoffing when he was told his question was stupid. It wasn’t like he didn’t know that --- Chenglei asked stupid questions all the time without meaning to, but most people wouldn’t comment about it anymore. Sawyer wasn’t most people. “You never use honorifics, so I forgot,” he mumbled sarcastically, another pout settling on his face as he leaned further back into the couch they were laying on. He stayed silent for a few moments before opening his mouth again, eyebrows furrowing in a way that meant the only thing out of Chenglei’s mouth next would be whined, “I don’t know how this is supposed to go! What are we even talking about? Just---” he raised his arm to gesture in the air randomly and he huffed again. “I don’t know. It’s too hard thinking in Korean right now.”
