my take on marius von hagen: part two, neglect

hello beautiful world and all who inhabit it, welcome to episode two of "z likes to make marius worse"! in this episode, i'm going to be going over my interpretation of marius' family dynamic in canon, as opposed to how i headcanon it should be (in my humble opinion).

edit: wow this is about 1.2k words and not under a read more, sorry!

the catalyst for this post is a tweet............... that resonated with my version of marius, but i felt didn't make sense for canon marius.

firstly, i'd like to say that to my recollection, canon marius has never given off any kind of indication his family was neglectful. busy? absolutely. but, with the way he explained things, it always came off like they made sure to always make time for him. for example, he talks about the importance of a lover's tradition he has in his immediate family in his card where he bakes with mc, it's such a profound thing that he says he never understood until he himself fell in love. it's intimate and yet, marius had such a close proximity to his family that he was privy to that.

in other words, marius' desire for something so strongly [because he saw what his father and brother had] reads as him being around them plenty enough to be able to discern that romantic love was different from familial love. he confirms he knows what a familial love is in the same breath as his confession that he wanted to know what a romantic love felt like.

the biggest piece of evidence though, to me, is when marius says he hadn't left stellis until he was older because his family was worried for his safety after that traumatic incident that left him afraid of being in dark and claustrophobic spaces.

contextually, all of these things seem to only prove that marius was not only around giann and austin all the time, but as a child he was likely smothered by them because they were looking to protect him. if his family were neglectful of his person, i feel it would reflect in the way he interacts with them in the present. we've seen his relationship to his father, and there's nothing tense about it; they talk comfortably, and austin even teases him like marius teases others. marius isn't uncomfortable with confiding in his father, and he's fiercely protective of his brother; he loves his family, and constantly makes sacrifices to protect them.

now, because i like to make marius worse instead of fixing him, here is where i shift strictly into headcanon territory.

this is how i feel the von hagen family dynamic should be, based on what we know about marius so far:

marius has a strained relationship to his father. giann was the glue that held the rest of the family together, and in his disappearance, the relationship between marius and austin began to crumble once again.

this =/= me saying austin was abusive or that he was a bad father, i just think that in the grand scheme of things, it made sense that he was emotionally absent and unavailable.

short explanation of my thoughts on the topic: emotional neglect is a thing marius experienced because of the tragedy that changed his family before he was even old enough to know a family that wasn't broken up already. austin certainly wasn't around as much and kinda left everything to giann, not because he didn't care about marius, but because he had no idea how to talk to his younger son and how to process his emotions correctly. he lost his wife and was still grieving, and in the wake of his grief, he was unable to tend to the needs of his son who suffered because of it. giann was better off simply because he was the older son and was able to be more independent.

long explanation: after someone else planted the seed that marius was responsible for this horrible trauma that was inflicted on the von hagen family unit, marius began to earnestly believe that he was responsible for the death of his mother.

as a result, marius got really sick, physically, because of the stress this put on his young mind and body. austin, in his own mess, was unable to properly tend to his son because he couldn't internalize and work through his own feelings of grief, and was not present to discuss this brush of emotion marius was left to deal with by himself. austin's only solution due to this separation was to try to get professional help for marius' ailment. when that didn't work, he sent him away, thinking a change of scenery would help him in his own grief.

in this version of events, marius did not heal properly. (as i have mentioned before, i don't believe the ferris wheel story is very realistic or likely, because i don't think marius has the emotional maturity to be able to heal himself from his anguish. he was only a child.) he simply realized that he needed to "atone" for his "sin" of existing by making sure that his mother's death was not in vain. he devoted himself to becoming the picture perfect second son of the von hagen family, in order to protect his family name and make sure nothing befell of them in the future.

after all, he saw himself as a blight that ruins things for the people around him. first, his mother, and then giann when he disappeared. marius worked even harder, by that point, to preserve giann's legacy because it's a tangible thing he could focus on whilst trying to find out where he is and what happened to him. it wasn't that marius didn't not still feel the love of his mother (of course he feels it in the little things that shows she's still always going to be a part of his life, even though he didn't get to know her), but it's more like he felt he didn't deserve it, because he's the reason she lost her life.

all of this trauma and the feelings of self-loathing he internalized as a result of his mother's death forced him to grow up too fast, and he grew up without the emotional attention and crutch afforded from a father. only giann was really there for him in the emotionally complex way he needed to be, but giann had his own responsibilities and his own life to tend to as well.

marius would grow to resent his father as an adult, but would be conflicted in feeling that way, because it all circles back to marius thinking he needs to prove that his mother didn't die for nothing and that he deserves everything that came his way. giann was the person between them that made communication possible, and when he left, marius didn't even have that to fall back on.

i don't mind that in canon, marius and austin seem to have a great relationship; it makes sense that the von hagens stick together when people try to screw them over. it's just not really my cup of tea knowing what i know. if hoyoverse didn't throw in random traumatic events, marius having the picture perfect family and having a more easygoing disposition would be more believable and because of this, sometimes i feel like his traumas do him a disservice. it makes sense that if his traumas were explored in a way that was more meaningful, he and his family would be more broken… and the dog eat dog high society world they live in contributed more to it.

marius' resentment towards the perpetual façade of his fame, in turn, would just be a natural progression of the state of things.

i alrdy told you this in dms zakie but i reject marius having braces because it just seems more in line with the established themes of his conceptualization that he's supposed to be perfect by all outside appearances.

however... if we really wanna bully marius by envisioning a giann totally taking advantage of how hilarious a miserable marius looks in a dentist chair for the family photo album, we could easily just give the kid cavities. lots of cavities. that would get worse and worse and cause lots of toothaches and pains and make it unbearable for little marius to eat :)

because let's face it, it's safe to assume marius has a sweet tooth. there's something about his whole childish condition that makes me feel like he'd beg and beg for candy and wouldn't relent with his little puppy dog eyes until he got it. his reward? frequent trips to the dentist to fix his teeth decay.

and no more candy :/

personally, my biggest issue with marius and how he's handled narratively is the fact that he'll drop some insane information about himself that isn't normal at all, and then will never touch on it again. i think deflection is absolutely normal for him, and it's likely he would do that when approaching things that happened to him and he doesn't want to talk about them, but i think it's not healthy for his state of mind to never confront any of it again.

i think it's bizarre that it happens this way, that he's always written like this and his signs of distress are so minimal and far in between. this is precisely what happens in most instances: mc will think "hey, no, wait, i need to ask him about this later." but the story never actually does a good job in following through on it... hence why i said i think he needs therapy as an adult. but that's just me, personally.

my take on marius von hagen: part one, his approach to romance

marius has been with me for over a year now and he pretty much occupies my thoughts 24/7, and this was something i have been itching to write for a while. so... strap in, grab your juice box and your cheetos and let's get this show on the road yeah?

Fair Warning, this will not be under a read more, so i apologize in advance if it gets pretty lengthy. (edit: this post is abt 1.8k words long, wow sorry lol.)

this is going to be a character analysis... sort of; it's an analysis of the version of marius that lives in my brain rent free. given that this is an introductory post to what i believe might be a series of my insane marius ramblings, i think i should provide some insight as to what said marius is like in order for the rest of this post to make sense.

first of all, i embrace realism and i reject canon. in marius' sweet wonders card, he finally reveals the significance of the z dog tag he's always wearing. while i think it's really magical that he was able to move on from blaming himself for his mother's death by having an epiphany staring at the ferris wheel... well, i like to make him worse and i just don't think, ultimately, that it's likely or realistic. the marius in my head has a very hard time trying to justify his own existence. i'm not saying he doesn't want to live, or that he'd put himself in any kind of danger, but i believe that he works very hard in order to justify being alive (to himself). not only does he still grapple with the loss of his mother and the role he believes he had to play in that, but there's a part of him that also blames himself for giann's disappearance.

marius believes that he is a vortex that sucks in everything, that destroys everything in its wake. we know for a fact, above all else, that marius doesn't want other people to have to go down with him.

i also believe (especially due to this description) that marius personally manufactured the image he has as a playboy, as opposed to it being a reputation that was given by others which he eventually leaned into.

allow me to elaborate.

marius, in his desire to avoid people being chewed up in his life and spat back out, would want to control the situation as much as possible. there are a few reasons why i believe he'd make this reputation for himself, which are 1) having control of the narrative of himself and making sure people do underestimate him is precisely how he maintains the upper hand in many scenarios (because let's face it, no one expects ditzy, arrogant marius von hagen to be able to outsmart them), and 2) it's much easier to push people away when he makes himself seem incompetent and undesirable. he may be one of the richest men on the planet, but sometimes money isn't enough to redeem an awful composition.

all of that having been said, marius additionally has to have severe trust issues due to the fact that he has a lot of influence and wealth people undoubtably want to use him for, and said influence is the source of a traumatic experience he went through as a child that would forever change the way he'd interact with others in the future. if you remember, marius vaguely alludes to an incident in will of the trees.

he mentions it again in the card in the darkness when he and rosa get trapped in a dark cave and he begins to panic, only this time he's a little more detailed about what happened to him in order to explain his anxiety to her.

then, he actually gives the details of what happened in his personal story.

mc remembers the hints marius had dropped to her a couple of times regarding this incident, so she then asks:

i don't believe marius actually blamed himself for his mother until this was said about him. his mother is the root of all things; he thinks that if he was never born, she would have never died, and perhaps she and giann would still be around and would be happy and healthy. he convinces himself that his existence destroyed his family. the stress of his feelings and anxiety makes him extremely sick as a kid.

all of this was too much for a young marius; now, remember when i said that i reject canon? that's important, because i don't think he ever properly recovered from this episode. i fully believe that marius does need and should go to therapy as an adult, and hasn't done so. my headcanon as to why he didn't, and why he gives off the impression that he's fine now and everything is fine now, is because he wised up and realized that he was being a burden on others and his mother's death would be in vain if he did so.

marius, tired of being a strain on the people he loves, pretends to be mentally sound to avoid his father and brother worrying about him. the way he chooses to cope with this is to disassociate himself with these events that happened to him, to the point where he talks about them like it wasn't him personally that experienced it. (i might touch upon this again in a future post if it becomes relevant.) he can't let others know that things bother him, because it can be weaponized; it would make him look weak, and the last thing he wants is anyone worrying about him but himself, or anyone to take advantage of that weakness. consider this as a strategy he adopted from the "conceal, don't feel" philosophy.

that having been said, a personal acceptance to "get over it" to stop feeling like he needs an emotional babysitter in his relatives =/= a lack of resentment towards others for how that was handled. marius nearly died due to the cruelty of a jealous relative, and his family was right in trying to protect him (as burdensome as he feels he may is), and he learns pretty quickly that he cannot trust others.

he still is one of the most influential people alive, and that means there's going to be a slew of people walking in and out of the revolving door leading into his life that are going to want to take advantage of that fact. it also goes beyond just people wanting to manipulate him, but he doesn't enjoy playing along in this circus of social hierarchy, and doesn't enjoy the people hanging around in these spaces. because they're ingenuine, they have no merit to him, and quite simply put he's looking to fill his life with color and sincerity.

i propose that... in order to consider a romantic relationship with someone, despite how much he longs for one, he would need to deeply get to know the person first and it would take a significant time to do so... and i know what you're thinking, it's just like a regular relationship, right? getting to know someone before deciding if you want to be with them? except, to marius, this is extreme; this social sphere he occupies has effectively chewed him up and spat him back out, because he's at the top of the top. his father is the wealthiest man in the world. marius by virtue of being a von hagen is essentially on the same level as royalty, and his family name is not enough to protect him. he has to be sharp, and he needs to be alert and constantly on guard.

he'd have no idea what someone's intentions may be with him when he meets them and he knows better than to blindly trust a person's seemingly apparent good faith, but also... he's so worried about dragging people down that he'd be almost afraid to consider it. it isn't enough that people want to use and abuse him to their hearts' content, but they'd try to tear up anyone else who went in there with him, and marius would be afraid of that outcome. he's already ruined the lives of his mother and his brother in his failure to protect them from the circumstances that removed them from his life. he would be unwilling to cause someone else he cares about to be put in the same situation, and he wouldn't be able to bear it if they also ended up abandoning him.

all of that leads me to say: i believe he would be more scared and avoidant upon realizing he was falling in love with someone, rather than immediately trying to pursue it with all he's got like he would his other endeavors.

the reason? it's so simple to pursue art. art is an arbitrary passion of his that doesn't impede on anyone else but himself, nor is it influenced by any outside forces; marius has full control over it. the same goes for his company; no one is going to sit there and hold his hand with his newfound ceo duties. he's always been capable of pursuing things on his own. romance is different; romance involves putting his young and fragile heart on the line to go after a whole other independent and outside entity not knowing whether or not he's going to face rejection.

eventually, i believe he'll completely learn to get over the hurdle, but in the interest of transparency... i think he's going to need a nudge from the other person first. a sign it's reciprocated, before he has to put his heart on ice.

i think it's on brand for marius to be a tease when you meet him; it is a genuine facet of his personality, but it's also something that feeds well into his reputation. he's assuming that people are going to know exactly who he is when he runs into them on the street, so he doesn't even bother dropping his pretense. but, i do think that extends... he doesn't drop that mask right away, it takes months and months, and lots of patience and understanding in order to unravel the mystery that is marius von hagen. he's going to want to gauge whether or not it's something he wants to commit to, and if it is, he's going to have to be prepared to unpack all that baggage. he would have to believe that this is going to be a happy ending for him, that his fairytale won't be a tragedy, in order to see a path forward. once marius goes into something, he doesn't step out.

so, he won't put up that much of a fight if he starts to fall in love with you, but that doesn't mean he would be eager make that leap of faith without getting a hint that there will be a safety net ready to catch him when he falls.

these are along similar lines of marius wanting to get a reaction out of luke like with the joke-y ones, but less of a joke and more of a innuendo. petnames like babe, darling, sweetheart, puppy, etc. and all of these are said with the undercurrent of sensuality and "wanna take this somewhere a little less PG 13? a-wink-wonk", said with the same tone marius says jiejie when hes being sly and trying to get a flustered reaction, You Know The Tone

and luke is just so easy to fluster, so it works like a charm all the time.

or when luke is trying to tell him to go to sleep already and get some rest but marius likes being awake because when hes awake, he can see how softly luke looks at him, he can feel how gently luke holds him close, and he argues with luke half-heartedly and very very blearily as he starts to nod off soon. mmm i'll...sleep later, love...five more minutes...

it's almost unbearably soft and tender to luke. the first time he hears these kinds of petnames from marius, he almost doesnt know how to react. but sure enough, he gets used to it. not in the sense that it's lost its novelty, but that marius calling him things like these (and all the other kinds of petnames too) becomes comfortable and well-worn and warm

now on luke's end......

.....i dont see luke using terms of endearment often with marius. at the very least, not as often as marius does for him. he prefers to just use marius' name, and he communicates whatever intent and feelings hes got in how he says it. sharp and witty whenever he wants to fight back from marius' teasing, low and deliberate whenever he wants to get marius to hot and bothered, soft and comfortable whenever theyre just enjoying each other's company, uncaring of anything else in the world but each other
