feel free to tell me all the things you find interesting about the punic wars btw I'm the type of history nerd that goes broad rather than deep most of the time so I haven't really looked into them past the Extra History series ages ago and then the various coverage Blue from OSP has given them but what I do know about them has me open to hearing more

So Extra Credits made a series of four videos about the Punic Wars and holy shit that is some awesome stuff

Like how that one Scorpius guy totally just copied Hannibal and used not only seemingly impossible tactics but did the surrounding thing

That is so awesome that’s like the coolest goddamn thing this is why i love ancient history

Used to Say I’d Make the Storm Clouds Cry for You

I have no idea if I’m going to finish this but this line from “I Can’t Help But Wonder” has been stuck in my brain for ages because he fucking DID. He literally did. I cannot make animatics because I am not efficient enough at art lmao but I do picture them in my head and this contrast of images is what I picture every time

The themes of Epic are this study in contrasts of what motivates you and what you have to do to achieve what you want and at what level do the ends justify the means and I think it does a very solid job at showcasing that it really depends on the individual situation? Like I know that you could also argue that it doesn’t work as well as it wants to because it feels like it WANTS to pick a side and then doesn’t really succeed but I don’t know if it DOES want to pick a side? Being human is a long series of choices, and we only know the full extent of what options we had in hindsight, even if we’re as smart as Ancient Greek Solid Snake over here.

Anyway I love this guy and I love Epic so I had to draw even though I’m only sort of okay at it lol

So I’m not any kind of expert in any of the things people get angry about in regards to Epic: the Musical as an adaptation but I do keep thinking about how the Odyssey is very much a story about putting war away and how difficult that is and that Epic does modernize some of the perspectives but does keep that as the major throughline

Yes, he fights a god in a DBZ fight and wins, yes, the angles on when “mercy” as an idea come up are sometimes kind of inconsistent and don’t line up with how things would have been seen in the time period, but the story remains about a guy who very much wants to not be at war having to live his life as if he still is when he just wants to fucking go home, and he fails in realistic ways as he tries to balance what he has to do to survive with the person he wants to be!

I think, in the end, Epic succeeds a lot at what it sets out to do, and I have yet to avoid crying my fucking eyes out at the last two songs whenever I hear them so clearly it’s doing something right, y’know? Lol

(if any of y’all are wondering what brought this on I’ve just been thinking about Epic a lot and watching a lot of reactions and similar points have come up)

(as someone who is fully in favor of Odysseus beating Poseidon but thinks the DBZ fight idea is a bit much I would like to thank @duvetbox for my life btw one of the best ways to showcase a scrappy mortal beating a god that there is)
