It was rare Zuko got to spend any time together with Mai lately, so he wanted to make every second count. They sat on a blanket in the garden, Zuko's back against a tree, with Mai's head on his chest, holding her hand.

They were used to being physically affectionate, they had always been. Whenever they could steal a few moments together, they were always holding hands, hugging, or kissing, or a combination of the three, even though these moments had become few and far between.

What Zuko struggled with was telling her how he felt. Mai had already told him she loved him, but Zuko hadn't been able to say those words to her. But he did love her, he loved her so much it shook the whole world. He just couldn't bring himself to tell her as much.

He looked at the fountain nearby, the very same fountain they had fallen in when they were kids. He smiled to himself as the memory resurfaced. A small rainbow formed in the sunlight reflecting off the water, and Zuko couldn't help the "beautiful" that escaped his lips. He didn't know if he'd said it about the fountain, the rainbow, or Mai herself, or perhaps all at the same time, but it didn't really matter.

Zuko pressed a kiss to the crown of her head as she snuggled closer to him, sighing contentedly. He hoped that, at least for now, his actions were enough to show her just how much he loved her. He would tell her one day, undoubtedly, but for now he wanted to stay in this dreamlike moment just a little longer.

The love was already there. The words would follow when the time was right, too.
