Hi everyone!
I don't know if anyone has noticed (I tend to lurk), but I've been off tumblr for (I think) a little over a week now. So, I thought I'd make a post so nobody thought I just disappeared. I intend to leave this website, and I may not be strong enough to fully quit, so I might pop in here and there.
I'm trying to quit social media-- that's all it is. I'm working on myself. I'll still be on discord, so if you know me there, I won't be completely gone. but yeah... guess I'll be away for a while.

Why is it so many times I see adaptations of classic literature, the two male leads (that are often shipped) are just two passibly white men who look exactly the same. Like I see people doing fanart based on these adaptations but like, the two characters that they're drawing are the same. That's the same man. They cast the same man.
It may have just been an era of adaptations (I don't really know, I don't watch them). I've also heard a lot of complaints about other adaptations: Dorian and Basil being siblings, white Heathcliff, "modernized" Carmilla. So it may just be the television industry trying to whitewash/assimilate/dequeer literature in spite of it all by making the two main male characters incredibly conventional, therefore stripping them of individuality, therefore making the same man.
I also tend to find that a lot of American movie-stars look essentially the same, and the ones that look even slightly different are put into the pool of "rodent-men" or "tumblr sexyman" even though they're conventionally attractive men just not aryan hollywood beloveds.
I'd be interested to hear what anyone thinks of this, or if anyone knows more about this subject.

This post I think is going to be all spoilers for Demons soo ummm...
Pyotr Steponovich just absolutely RAKING his father over the coals is so absolutely effective. Just in front of all of their family friends "Teehee, I heard you're getting married... and you wanted me to save you... because allegedly your fiancee got screwed by *somebody* who knows? I mean maybe someone's *son*? Obviously I wouldn't know anything about that. teehee." Like he absolutely knows he's playing with fire and is out to RUIN Stepan Trofimovich's life.

So I'm going to give my opinion on something that doesn't matter, and I don't really think anyone cares about. Having said that, I have already given my opinion and it has since been reformed, so I think I should correct myself. Furthermore I would like to say, this is in no way an attack on anyone who disagrees with me. I respect the other opinions on either side.
(Crime and Punishment spoilers below the cut) So here's the thing:
I had formerly stated that Raz/Ras was superior to their canon pairings. I amend that statement. Raz/Dunya is the purest combination known to man. There could not be a better pairing. They're literally perfect for each other. His kindness and her pride are so incredibly complementary to each other. Match made in heaven.
Raz/Ras is cute, don't get me wrong, it just isn't superior. Their characteristics are also complementary, but like, they can't get married. And (I'd like to add) I never really feel like any Dostoevsky ships are mutually exclusive. At least in the fandom.
Sonya deserves better than a murderer with a god-complex. I know he has a good heart (deep down), I know he ends up reformed. My Sonechka deserves better. I think maybe even she needs better. I see where the other side is coming from, but she's been through such a traumatic situation, and I don't think he has the maturity to care for her. At least Siberia was a change of scenery.

As far as I know, with Dostoevsky at least, Constance Garnett translations tend to be lacking. In general, they're often confusing, sometimes she leaves things out or changes scenes, and she doesn't include translator's notes (which honestly would require a pretty vast amount of knowledge that she may not have at a the time). Someone else could potentially provide more information, as I only speak english and haven't read very many different translations and haven't read Tolstoy. But this is what I know.
Ok russian lit tumblr what's the general consensus on Constance Garnett translations because I only read Chekhov and in regards to his works she's generally considered to have done the best translations but apparently her Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy ones are from mediocre to terrible to downright making things up?? Is she actually mistranslating and changing tone from the original works?
