getting a bit tired of hearing “the trans agenda is to stay alive” “the gay agenda is to be allowed to grow up” “the queer agenda is to be allowed to love freely” cuz like i guess yeah those are good things and the liberals love them but my queer agenda is total gender liberation and an upheaval of capitalism and prison abolition and building a new and informed society. but yeah i can pretend the extent of my activism is about like a pride flag hanging from the capitol. sure.

Hi I'm sorry for venting in your inbox but I'm so tired.

I hate how female characters are held to such a high standard, especially in fandom spaces. No matter what they do, people will zero-in on the most microscopic flaw and then tear them apart.

She’s feminine? “Why is she so girly, women don’t HAVE to wear dresses/makeup/etc!”

She’s masculine? “Ew, she’s such a pickme NLOG. Why does every female character have to be a girlboss? Why are women not allowed to be feminine anymore?”

She doesn’t accept help from a man? “Ugh, what a mean bitch. Why does she think she’s so much better than him? She’s so stupid, why didn’t she just let him help!”

She does accept help from a man? “This is so sexist! Why isn’t she strong and independent! This isn’t empowering enough, she should be able to do everything on her own!”

She wants to settle down and have kids? “Yuck, I’m so tired of ever female character getting married and having kids at the end.”

She never wants to settle down or have kids? “Uh-huh, cool. Anyways, she’s totally the mom friend of the group and here’s my fix-it fic where she settles down and gets married and has a bunch of kids like she should have done in the story.”

She enjoys dressing modestly and doesn’t want to go on dates or sleep with anyone? “Why is she such a prude, she’s so boring and annoying! I bet she thinks she's sooo much better than everyone else.”

She enjoys dressing in revealing clothing and having casual sex? “Gross, what a nasty whore. This character has singlehandedly set feminism back by 50 years, she’s only like this to cater to the male gaze, no women would ever enjoy dressing like that!”

She’s very shy and polite? “Why is she such a pushover? She’s so annoying, why doesn’t she stand up for herself.”

She’s very mean and rude? “The writer is such a sexist, they think women are catty bitches! Why do they think women treat each other like that?”

Like oh my god women literally cannot do fucking anything can we?

And it’s even worse for characters that are POC, queer, disabled, etc. They’re held to such impossibly high, absurd standards for what “Good Representation” is and when they inevitably cannot meet that standard, they get “Problematic” stamped on their forehead and they get tossed in the trash so everyone can go back to focusing on their male blorbos (who often times have the exact same fucking traits that were just called problematic).

I want to write an #ownvoices story about an autistic bisexual polyam woman doing cool shit but I already know that she’s going to get torn apart for being too mean, too weird, too GNC, too much, too much, too much.

She’s one of my fave characters I’ve ever made. If someone could read minds and they followed me around all day, all they would see in my head is her. I love her so, so much.

But I don’t know if my heart can take putting her out into the world (especially considering the story is #ownvoices and she’s heavily based on me) only for her to be torn apart.

Making female characters should not feel like I’m trying to defuse a bomb at gunpoint

So I know we haven't answered this and I'm sorry for that wait. I want to remind you of who exactly is finding fault in female characters.

Terfs / radfems are the women finding fault in female characters when its not men. Terfs/ radfems are the ones driving women to become MAGA supporters and they are by and large white women. We have to remember in the face of misogyny where the roots of that hate lie. The goal of terfs/radfems is to make women submit to men and be their broodmares. You might sometimes come across women like Candice owen who are far right talking heads but they still serve white supremacy.

One of the things when writing is you have to remember that there are 2 types of people. 1) people that will read your stuff in good faith and will get what you're trying to say (they are feminists or trying to be allies) 2) terfs/radfems/ and MAGA supporters who are trying to tear down women to serve white supremacy.

You are writing for the first group of people unfortunately they are not the loudest. You must not let the second group influence your writing in the least. This being pride month please keep in mind that just like finding your chosen family you will find your audience.

Lotta confusion as to "why are the granola save the whales hippies right wing conspiracy theorists now?" And I think the answer is twofold:

Any social movement in the anglosphere is gonna have a certain amount of reactionaries who happen to be temporarily aimed at a good cause. A lot of them were always low-key right wing.

When you have no ability for class analysis, it is a very short idealogical step from "distrust of pharmaceutical companies" to "distrust of modern medicine as a whole" to "judeo-bolsheviks are poisoning white babies for profit"

This trend will continue until people have access to non-predatory healthcare. Conspiracism thrives when people are failed by the systems they rely on.

terfs try so hard to pretend they’re somehow the arbiters of truth and anti-racism and then their idol gets into an online debate with the best gymnast of all time— who is also a black woman— and they all IMMEDIATELY start calling her racial slurs 💀

misogyny/misogynoir and transphobia go hand and hand and if you don’t see that, it’s ‘cause you’re blind 👍

Came across this incredibly important petition on bluesky. Bathroom access is a disability issue, but more than that, while it would be bad enough if they were "just" going after trans people, we need to remember that they use trans people as a gateway to erode all womens rights, all queer peoples rights, all gender non conforming peoples rights, the rights of everybody who does not fit into the perfect white abled neurotypical ideal.

The sheer amount of times I as a cis disabled sapphic woman was harassed by TERFs for not fitting into their woman ideal...

TERFs don't speak for the majority of cis women. They don't even actually care about the safety of cis women, it is just a nice sounding excuse for abusing trans people, given how often they gleefully sold us out and cooperated with open fascists just for the chance of harming trans people. Always remember that. We need to fight back.
