WAIT THESE BOTH ARE CANON?! HOW?!

I just wanted to mention that I think there are two versions of canon that exists. While it's nice to try and strive for both I think only one should be focused on. I'm mainly going to be using Undertale AUs plus a dash of Sonic The Hedgehog as examples since I mainly make stuff for those fandoms but this can be applied for other fandom as well.

TYPES OF CANON

Name Canon - Oldest Version to be created with the name.

Concept Canon - Oldest Version of a created with the concept. (Though stuff like a Splatoon AU of Undertale and an Undertale AU of Splatoon are not the same technically.)

NAME VS CONCEPT

Using this different types of canon we can say AUs like Undertoad and Underbros are separately canon by name despite both being Mario AUs of Undertale meanwhile stuff like the iconic version of Bad Time Trio with Undertale Sans, Underswap Papyrus and Storyshift Chara is only canon by concept because of an earlier Bad Time Trio made up of Mettaton Neo, Undyne the Undying and Sans exists. While the second one of BTT is mentioned is the oldest meaning it is the name canon, the first one mentioned is the first of it's concepts making it the concept canon of itself.

SO STUFF CAN BE OFFICIAL TO ITSELF EVEN IF EXISTS SOMEWHERE ELSE

Some similar concepts can crossover but since it's only official in the AU it's made for it doesn't interfere. For example Super Sonic is an official form for the Sonic franchise but does change on how it works from AU to AU and sometimes not existing. Another example is a fan creating an AU and then the companies actually making a collaboration and that AU now exists. The fanmade a Concept Canon but the companies who own the original media make an official one to their franchises.

CONCLUSION

Overall this means only certain things can be canon in certain ways and have it's own official stuff to itself but can have similarities with others. If you want a canon AU follow this method unless you feel this is wrong.
