i love the idea of comphet lily who pushes down her queer feelings until they're just a dull ache that she feels whenever she looks at a pretty girl deciding that the only way to fully kill off the feelings is to date a guy

she didn't like james back when he was constantly asking her out, but she convinces herself she likes him because he's perfect, straight, hot, a man. and then one day lily finds james crying in the hallway because sirius and remus are dating and he's torn between his feelings for remus and wanting his friends to be happy and suddenly her image of him shatters. here james is, crying and selfish and in love with a boy, and it sends lily into a spiral.

she looks at those pretty girls, she feels that guilt, and then she looks over at james who excuses himself to go cry every time sirius and remus smile at each other.

she knows he feels guilty too, but because of her own guilt, she assumes it's because remus is a boy. and then she says it, says she feels guilty for looking at girls - something she's never told anyone before - and james looks at her funny and says, "i'm not upset because he's a boy, i'm upset because he and sirius deserve to be happy and i can't be happy for them."

lily spirals again. james is even less perfect now - he's okay with liking boys. and then this makes lily realize that it's very odd, really, for her to be so against him being gay when sirius and remus are both gay too. and she points this out, says "i didn't know you were gay," and james tells her he's pansexual, not gay, and lily is so upset with her guilt and her homophobia and what she doesn't know.

something in her always assumes james will hide and marry a girl anyway, just like she plans to hide and marry a boy. and then he starts dating regulus black.

james starts quietly teasing lily whenever she looks at a girl, and it takes her ages to realize that he's trying to make her more comfortable with herself - and it's working.

the first time mary kisses lily in the gryffindor common room during some party for the quidditch team, nobody cares except james, who cheers. lily rolls her eyes at him, and time goes on. how could she ever feel guilty for this?
