no one came to asterid’s wedding. neither her parents, nor merrilee. merrilee wanted to, but her folks forbade her from going. burdock made sure people came to greet them once they got home but those were his people, not hers. he offered to rent her a dress but she refused. said they’d need all the money they could spare, so no need to be wasteful. she just wore her sunday best.

plenty of people came to merrilee’s wedding. none of whom she wanted to. she stared at their faces, hopelessly wishing for the dear ones she wanted to see. asterid’s, and one like her own. for a faint moment she remembered how they sat in school as little girls, giggling and dreaming of their weddings one day. now she’d never see maysilee’s, and oh, she missed the chance to see asterid’s. she was sorry for it. one day she dropped off a basket at the newlyweds’ doorstep, a wedding gift, an apology and greetings for the happy couple. never knew if they received it, didn’t have the guts to stay. merrilee had a new dress. a jolly pretty one too. what a pity her girls didn’t see it.

love the ketchup comparison. truly, tbosas was a wonderful addition to the series, especially lore-wise. the capitol perspective, the covey, lucy gray were all well-written and add depth to the worldbuilding, yet none of them really change much. 

I think the reason why SotR ultimately fails, and TBoSaS has less opponents (except for the crowd who would lynch you for enjoying Snow's character at all) is that the latter doesn't retcon anything from the original trilogy. It doesn't even recontextualize anything. It just adds flavor to certain scenes, but - strictly in terms of the books - not much. Specifically one, the conversation between them in Catching Fire, when he mocks her for Peeta seeing through her act. Because all other scenes now being used to show parallels between TBoSaS and the trilogy are movie-exclusive, although written with Collins' help, which indicated that she might have a vague idea of Snow's background at this point. I'm not saying that she already had Lucy Gray Baird in her mind back in 2012, but surely there was some idea brewing.

Still, TBoSaS doesn't change much. It never tries to convince you that, had he not met Lucy Gray, Snow would be a nice young lad, and not a cold-blooded dictator. If you don't lack media literacy, it also never tries to reframe Katniss-Snow conflict as him holding personal grudge first and foremost. Sejanus was literally invented to show the readers that Snow will eliminate anyone, who he perceives as a threat, and Katniss is a threat to his regime. Lucy Gray's existance and her memory surely added some personal bitterness, which might add new optics to Snow's personal torment of Katniss in Catching Fire, but the entire epilogue indicates that, while LGB will always be a thorn in Snow's side, he is perfectly capable of functioning and achieving success without thinking much about her every day.

Simply speaking, TBoSaS is like ketchup to the trilogy's fries. You can eat the fries without it, and they're still delicious, but ketchup adds something without taking anything.

SotR, on the other hand, serves you carrots instead of fries, and when you start to protest, it explains to you that you actually asked for carrots, that you had to read the menu wrong, because the menu says 'carrots', and what do you mean that there's a picture of fries next to the price? It's all some sort of the great potato propaganda. You were wrong for wanting fries. It was always a carrot, so eat it and shut up.

relationship with festus creed

general idea: sweet in the academy, complicated, possibly unhealthy further on. eventually they break up as festus is close to snow during his rise to power and refuses to notice the danger, pippa 'flees' and thus remains safe.

since vipsania would be about 58 at the time of sotr, and drusilla is (maybe) about this age as well, I think it would make sense for them to be cousins?? maybe drusilla’s from a minor branch or a descendant of some least favorite child, which is why we never hear of her in tbosas

• mrs price was called poppy by everyone except nero, he only ever called her paulina

• nero was 2 years younger than paulina

• mrs price was pennsylvanian polish of origin, and had some traces of her culture left in her upbringing

• nero took paulina to the sea for their honeymoon, and promised to take her there again, but never did

• mrs price was first cousins with vipsania sickle’s mother. after paulina’s passing, mrs sickle took care of persephone for a while during the war, invited her over for tea, brought her gifts. nero objected at first, but then agreed because it took little pippa’s mind off troubles. but then things got hard for sickles too and they just stopped coming over and inviting pippa. nero never quite forgave them for it.

• nero had a strained relationship with paulina during the war, but started to idolise her after her passing, viewing her as this honourable sacrifice. this seriously messed up his moral code, leading to him to do whatever it took to save their daughter.
