Is John Frusciante overrated?
I recently watched a video from Justin Hawkins talking about how he feels John Frusciante is an overrated guitarist. I liked hearing everything he had to say in the video, but as a huge Frusciante fan, I wanted to share my opinion. I don’t think John is overrated and here’s why:
As a guitarist he is not as technical as others like Satriani or Hendrix, but he has so much emotion. I have seen the Chili Peppers live twice now and when John performs solos or jams alongside Flea, I get what I would have to call a spiritual experience, as all good music should drive people to experience. He is one of those musicians that make playing sound and look so effortless; it feels as though the music flows through him. His tone is impeccable, jamming the strings or otherwise barely touching them. He always keeps an essence of funk/punk in his style, which I have to admire. He is always pushing boundaries with innovative melodies as he showed going onto make his own synth/ pop/ rock music outside of the Chili Peppers. He never shows off too much, but just enough. His playing is human having imperfections, but with his ear for harmony and melody, still manages to sound purposeful. Past his talent as just a guitarist, lyrically John has written some of the best songs to come out of the Chili Peppers career. Stadium Arcadium for instance!
I would love to hear your thoughts on Frusciante as a musician too!

My perception of The Catcher In The Rye
Personally, I think the book hints at pedophilia/ child molestation. Let me explain.
Early in the book, Holden says he liked a girl name Jane who had a “bore hound stepfather” doing things like running around naked and being very prone to having tantrums. Later, the stepfather makes Jane cry in front of Holden. She was said to be an innocent girl, quiet, and kept to herself. Was she scared of being around boys? Did her stepfather have something to do with making her this way?
Later in the book, we meet a Mr. Antolini (Holdens old teacher). Holden is invited into Mr and Mrs Antolinis Home and describes their relationship as “never seen in the same room,” implying they are distant. But he goes onto say that they are always seen, “kissing in public,” implying they fake their love for each-other in public, putting on a perfect household mask. I could be reading into things here but, while saying goodnight, Mr Antolini calls Holden “handsome”. Holden later wakes up to find Mr Antolini “petting his face”. He made Holden very uncomfortable. Holden said it happened often from many adults when he was younger. Mr Antolini tries to get Holden to calm down by saying he was just “admiring”. Again, I may be reaching here, but Mr Antolini says in a rant to Holden that, “you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior… just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It’s a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn’t education. It’s history. It’s poetry.” Put in the context of the themes I am reading in to, that doesn’t sit right with me. It sounds like an offer from Mr Antolini.
But back to Holden. When he was made uncomfortable at Mr Antolinis House he said that that kind of thing happened, “about 20 times since I was a kid.” His flee from the old teachers apartment made it obvious what he did triggered something in Holden. This makes so much sense as to why Holden is so immature, or why his friends describe him to seem to never grow up. Holden says he has only been intimate with a girl once, he never wants to make a girl feel uncomfortable or feel pressured to do something she doesn’t want to do. Holden brings a prostitute in his room in the middle of the book, not for love, but to empathize with her.
It’s no wonder all Holden wants to do is be a catcher in the rye for children. Be someone to save the children from falling off that cliff.

A Little Life rant
There’s a lot of hate around this book, but it’s one of my most beloved so of course, I have to write my biased opinions about it.
First off, Jude’s cutting is not for “gore” or “shock factor”, it is a symptom of and a control mechanism for the abuse he endured most of his early years. The graphic deceptions of abuse and physical suffering he went through are rare in mainstream literary fiction, so obviously many people are unaware that this book is not written as “torture porn” as it is many peoples realities. Not everyone’s life is so easy. The book is called A Little Life, so the reason Jude’s suffering is so extensively documented is because it is the foundation of his character. He was not raised with knowing how to reach out for help, he never had anyone to love him at a young age, so he’s learned to suffer alone. Throughout the book it’s said spiritual salvation of this sort does not exist because of what is happening/ happened to Jude. This is not meant to be, as many have called it, “horror writing” at all. Some people are just scared or unaware of what could be anyone’s real life. The reason literature is written is to inform others what they may not understand.
This has been my take of the “torture porn” accusations about A Little Life. I would love to hear yours.
