In honor of International Trans Day of Visibility (March 31st) - I hand lettered one of the most impactful pro-trans quotes that means the absolute world to me...

Revisiting this scene has felt like a rallying cry amidst all the political turmoil of the past few months (dare I say years now?). And feels more necessary now than when The Return aired in 2017. Tolerance is really the bare minimum, a limbo bar that is on the floor, and even so it feels like the world is getting more and more hostile to transgender people. But I don't want just tolerance, I think we should all be striving for acceptance.

If you still don't understand what on earth this means, I highly recommend this article as it sums up the collective feelings on this issue quite neatly and succinctly.

So lets strive to be like the iconic David Lynch himself and no longer put up with people wanting to harm our community.

I really loved working on this series and comparing and contrasting both Satoshi Kon's art style and David Lynch's shot composition and the various many ways both of their individual bodies of work felt interconnected to me. Like they were in dialogue with each other or the sort of connection to the "Ocean of Collective Unconsciousness" where creative ideas come from. Both of them were both titans of cinematography and surreal storytelling and were willing to be experimental and bold, it's just a shame we lost both of them far too soon before their time. One day the sadness will end.

Such as 1994’s indie cult film, Pulp fiction, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Boy did that Uma Therman sure know how to dance… Did you know the set location was actually a closed down bowling alley? Still, It was quite the culture shock for us to truly experience the real deal. Though you could never handle your alcohol, could you Zach? For being in a small town such as Greenvale, The Galaxy of Terror has a surprisingly lively nightlife atmosphere. Great place, though they don't serve coffee. I think it could even rival that of bars in other bigger Washington cities, don’t you think Zach?❞

My piece for Bonus Footage @deadlypremonitionzine for Deadly Premonition's 15th year anniversary! This game has that small town campy charm while simultaneously being one of the most haunting horror concepts that it made a very strong impression on me the first time I came across it about eight years ago.

Mostly this piece was inspired by the thought of these two sisters getting the happy ending that was denied for them, in an alternative universe kind of way. With Carol still performing her heart out on stage, and Thomas able to join in by accompanying her on the piano.

bonus symbolism under the cut;

Thomas is wearing a squirrel necklace specifically modeled after a Beechey ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), to go with her special interest and because it's the most common type locally to where the game would take place.

The film strip is homage to Zach and York’s love of movies. The sound waves (which used to be printed on old film reels!) is the actual visual audio pattern with Carol singing “I dream of you” which I transposed using editing software. Even though it's a blink and you miss it detail I thought it was worth the effort haha.

Besides all the police station keys from Thomas’ search request, I added other in game items, such as the red seeds, York’s no smoking lighter, Thomas’ biscuit, York’s coffee (with FK swirled in the cream!), the reversed peace sign, and some cigarettes.

The leaves falling are specifically from the red trees local to Greenvale, that sparks the entire plot (and the horrors).

Doppelgänger Laura time!

I find the whole concept of duality in the show, especially the elements tied to the black lodge to just be fascinating. Laura's exaggerated difference here and her scream were absolutely terrifying the first time I bore witness to it. So much so, I thought it deserved it's own art separate to the dream Laura "meanwhile" from part 3. Also is it just me or does the paleness of all the doppelgänger eyes feel connected to the white horse and the woodman quote too?

part 8 of ??? in the series of "What if Twin Peaks had a 90's anime adaptation where David Lynch and Satoshi Kon collab'ed."

I started this back in October with all the other parts of this series but I needed to take a break. Losing David Lynch just a few weeks ago was a huge loss, especially as someone I really did admire creatively. I knew I needed to return to drawing this series.

So here's the continuation of this project!

Gotta love that dutch angle (iirc it's one of the first on network television whereas before it was only used in movie cinematography!) I just loved how it adds to a sense of visual suspense and unease.

Oh Josie, season 2 really should have treated you better. Still can't believe things went soo off the rails post reveal. She's one of my favorites of the series and even though her ending does have some thematic sense to it, I still think it was a waste of what could've been done in service of her complicated character instead.

part 7 of ??? in my series of drawings continuing to imagine what a twin peaks anime would look like if made by Satoshi Kon.

I just love this line and the framing of this scene. The log lady's clairvoyance of what is to come and her cryptic warning. The concern she tries to impart. Laura's fear and yet somehow 'knowing'. The bright neon lights of the Bang Bang Bar/ The Roadhouse.

It just felt like the right moment to capture here for this series.

King of the 'treat yourself' community lol. Honestly have truer words to live by, ever been said?

part 6 of ??? of my series of drawing 'What if David Lynch and Satoshi Kon partnered up to direct a 90's anime adaptation of Twin Peaks'.

I really adore this whole interaction so much it lives in my head rent free, but all the moments of Harry and Coop interacting are hands down my favorite parts of this campy and ridiculous (extremely affectionate) show.

part 5 of ??? of my series of redrawing Twin Peaks in Satoshi Kon's 90's anime style.

What would a Twin Peaks project be without one of the weirdest character's of all: The Arm. He's too iconic /not/ to include frankly. Even though what most people would expect would be a scene with him dancing, I thought going for a scene where he shows off the ring would be very important. Because of the black symbol, it's connection to corn and garmonbozia and it's connection to Laura's purpose and inescapable fate. It's such layered symbolism to me, I could honestly make a whole video essay info-dumping on just this alone.

Part 4 of ??? of my series of redrawing Twin Peaks as if Satoshi Kon made a 90's anime adaptation.

I know there are so many horrifying moments in Twin Peaks but for me this was so jarring and shocking I knew I had to include it for this project (and also the spookiest month of the year). Because even all these years later after seeing it, it still gives me chills. Frankly I was completely creeped out the entire time drawing it...

The idea of a character who embodies light, and whimsy, and altruism, being twisted beyond recognition is truly terrifying, such a huge cliffhanger.

In a lot of ways this moment felt very eerie and similar to both the literal visuals as well as the sensation of later seeing the bloody 'faux Mima' near the end of Perfect Blue. Where the dream instead takes on a nightmare quality for it's surrealism.

(also still mind-blown this was Frank Silva's first acting role)

There were so many moments in the red room I wanted to tackle, but how could I not do that specific hand gesture which feels so emblematic of the series in its entirety?

I did have a head scratchy moment trying to think if I should visually try to make the backwards & reversed speech but ultimately thought that would be far too distracting and mess with the legibility.

Part 2 of ??? in this series of redrawing Twin Peaks as if Satoshi Kon made a 90's anime adaptation.

This ending scene from Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me will always haunt me. It's such an emotionally dense scene it's still hard to wrap my head around. Bitter-sweet sorrow and relief wrapped in such an incredible and uncomfortable performance? It's also so strange to imagine this being the ending note for the story for 25 years until 'The Return' finally aired.

A continuation or sort of more of a build up from this post.

I've recently finished watching all of Satoshi Kon's work and I keep thinking about as an auteur how both he and David Lynch have so much in common with their directorial styles, themes, focus on surrelism, and visual film language that I just had to do something with that idea. So I just ran with the concept of redrawing what is, in my opinion, some of the most impactful or memorable shots of Twin Peaks but done in Satoshi's style as if he made a 90's anime adaptation!

So to start this off I had to draw Audrey. The bathroom scene is so iconic to me honestly with the set design having those red double peak lines.

Inspired by my own dream symbology and that feeling while falling into that liminal space we all find ourselves when asleep. I was listening to Claire De Lune by Debussy when making this hence the time signature in the title. It's one of those melodies that feels haunting like a dream.
