@lizzobeeating - Cuz I Love You Strong 8/10 It seems like everyone and their grandmothers has been asking me to talk about Lizzo's new project, and finally I got to listening to it. This record has been some of the most fun I've had reviewing a project this year. Lizzo sings her ass off all throughout each of these short but sweet little tunes. It seems like every song has a bit of Prince sprinkled into it with it's soulful and even bluesy energy. It does feel a tad disjointed as it jumps from sound to sound but she pulls off each with flying colors. I do feel tracks like Juice and Soulmate are a bit overproduced but the rest of the album is full of some of the best high energy, empowering, and extremely well performed pop songs of the year. @weyesblood - Titanic Rising 8/10 Natalie Mering (aka Weyes Blood) is a singer songwriter from Santa Monica, California. Her new album Titanic Rising is gorgeous, haunting, enchanting and also kind of bland. After the first three songs pass by, alot of the material starts to kind of blend together. While her vocals are incredibly beautiful, she tends to stay in her comfort zone and a couple of the instrumentals don't really stand out among the crowd. What I'm trying to say is that this album lacks variety. Sure, 'Everyday' is more upbeat, and 'Movies' is a grand two-parter. But tracks like 'Mirrors Forever' and 'Something To Believe' feel like weaker retreads of songs already done better on this album. However, the oldies aesthetic is pulled off beautifully and makes this record sound timeless, and there isn't a noticeable dip in quality throughout the short ten track runtime here. @thebeatles - The Beatles (White Album) Classic Evaluation 10/10 I haven't put out a classic review in a long time so I thought I'll just post one really quick. In my opinion, as disjointed and chaotic this entire record seems to be, this is the best one. The subtlety of the title and cover art alone really wraps it all together, this is The Beatles whether you like it or not. I always like to think of this record as the final one regardless of the existence of 'Let It Be' as this album leaves the band off with a legendary mic drop. This double album is front to back incredible, and while there's a couple songs I don't super care for I never skip them. This album feels like a collage of everything these four have done together and it's a astonishing what this band was able to accomplish in the time it was around, magical indeed. @lilnasx - 7 EP 5/10 Lil Nas X is a young up incoming artist who blew up recently with Old Town Road, a solid tune with a country twang that stood him up from the crowd of boring trap rappers that I try to avoid. He seems like a fun guy on twitter too so I had high hopes that this upcoming EP would give him a second chance to show he's not a one hit wonder. I'm sad to say that I only like 2 of the 6 new tracks here which are Panini and Rodeo. His attempts at making rock music on tracks like 'F9mily (You & Me)' and 'Bring U Down' feel shallow and lifeless. 'Kick It' and 'C7osure (You Like)' have awkward flows and feel kind of thrown together but I do prefer the latter. Overall I'm worried but at the same time I hope Nas finds his footing and keeps working on finding his own sound without ripping from people like Travis Scott. @flume - Hi This Is Flume Strong 7/10 I don't think anyone expected a mixtape from Flume but here we are. It's strange but I feel that this format of releasing music really complements Flume's style. Each song leads smoothly into the next and none of them drag on. This allows each idea feel fleshed out weirdly enough as it all works together to make a interesting listen. I also feel that Flume has adapted his style to fit better with the prevailing trends in music right now without throwing out his trademark sound. However, I do feel the record kind of loses me towards the second half. I still think this record is better then Skin though and I'm excited to see what he does next. @100gecs - 1000 gecs 6/10 This album is the closest I've been to going through an acid trip. This duo isn't afraid of the strange, mind boggling and intense insane sounds from across various genres including even going as far as ska, yah ska. As far as experimental music goes I feel there's a fine line that I can't cross. Sure I can get behind artists like Death Grips, SOPHIE, Iglooghost, etc, but 100 gecs occasionally throughout this album will try something I can't handle. If you want a musical challenge I highly recommend giving this a shot if you dare. Mid Year Reflection Since we're about halfway through the year I thought it would be a nice time to go back and revisit some older reviews and see if any of my opinions have changed since then. @billieeilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? I'm just puzzled on why I gave this album the score I gave it originally. The writing isn't as bad as I made it out to be, sure, sometimes it's a tad much but the songs themselves are creative and well made. The track "8" has even grown on me. I still dislike the tracks "all the good girls go to hell" and "my strange addiction" but I enjoy everything else here and I come back to this record more and more over time. @kevinabstract - ARIZONA baby This review is the reason I wanted to do this in the first place. I'm guilty, I was totally "fanboying" when this album dropped. The score I gave was way too generous for what this album has turned out to be for me after the hype died out. This album is messy and it just feels like a college of ideas and most of them don't mesh well. Sure, "Baby Boy" and "Peach" are still fantastic, however, I feel alot of the material here is just okay and the record loses it's pace the more it goes on. @anderson._paak - Ventura Replayability is a huge part of why I give albums certain scores. In this case I honestly never listen to this album. @steve.lacy - Apollo XXI Strong 7/10 This album is so fun, the production across this entire record is cute, silly and creative. Steve as a vocalist gives me Prince vibes and he's got an ear for melody crafting. I really enjoy alot about this album but there's a couple aspects I don't care for. Steve pulls a Tyler, The Creator and puts a couple three part tracks on here similar to the one seen on Tyler's record Wolf. The song Like Me does a good job being three great songs but they're not tied together and that annoys me. Outro Freestyle/4ever is another instance of this and it doesn't work here for me at all much like that Wolf track. Of course a couple songs out shine others but it's not so much that I skip them and other then that this record is very great. @connerthecelebrity - Celebrity 7/10 No, he didn't pay for this. ConRad is an artist I've recently met through doing this music review thing for awhile. He seemed like a cool guy and he made music so I was curious to see what this new mixtape had to offer. First off the production is very raw and consistently freaky and out of this world and I'm a big fan of it. ConRad himself is a pretty good rapper and while sometimes the vocal mixing can be a bit low it doesn't bother me too much. My biggest issue is the obvious comparison to Tyler the Creator, specifically Gobin (a criticism I bet he's used to). And while that would bother me more it definitely feels intentional, like he's filling the hole Tyler left behind. He's clever, funny, and engaging throughout. Check it out! Also go watch Mr. Pickles, because why not. @injuryreserve - Injury Reserve 7/10 I keep hearing about these guys and I figured with the release of their debut album it would be a great time to check them out. My past experience with JPEGMAFIA really came in handy here as these guys give me similar vibes but I feel they're more focused on writing catchy experimental hiphop rather then being as batshit crazy as Peggy tends to be. This record feels really short and cohesive in the best way possible and while I like some songs more then others I had a blast with this. I also really enjoyed the features my favorites being Freddie Gibbs and Aminé. If you're interested in experimental hiphop this is actually a really great entry point. @flyinglotus - Flamagra 8/10 Flylo is one of my biggest inspirations and has truly changed the way I produce music myself so when Flamagra was announced I was already sold. Like every Flylo project these albums are weird and creative as hell with lots of fun features and incredible production. This album is alot more uplifting compared to his last record "You're Dead!" And feels like a beautiful galaxy blooming around you which makes sense he's said this is a sequel to Cosmagramma. It's honestly so hard to talk about this album as his work tends to be one big journey rather then being more traditional with song structures and album design. I recommend if you want to dive into weird, experimental and gorgeous music try this record out, you might like it. Favorite Track: Fire Is Coming (feat. Tyler, The Creator - IGOR 10/10 Before jumping into this I need to preface that despite what everyone is saying this isn't a hiphop album in the slightest, it just isn't. This record is a whole new monster, like every project Tyler dropped prior and every single artistic inspiration he's ever had decided to have a giant moshpit in his wacky brain. This record was much more insane then I could've possibly ever imagined and it's more ambitious then anything his contemporaries have done recently. If you wanted Tyler to spit bars this isn't for you. This is the evolution of a musical composer and producer who's pushing genre boundaries and bending the rules of what counts as hiphop music despite what I said earlier. I'll be honest on first listen I had no idea how I was supposed to feel. But now, after sitting with it for a couple days I finnaly know now that Tyler deserves it. Congratulations.
