MAYA NOVOA. 31. Nurse / Home health aide. Gastown / Vancouver. All you are searching for, dear friend, is gone, devoured by brutes—savaged or swallowed whole. The mob has sacked the palace that was my heart: raging drunk, they loot, and brawl, and kill.

"My goodness, you're a lifesaver," Maya rhapsodized upon spinning on her heel to find a wad of cash being thrust at her. The lord worked in mysterious ways, and this time, she didn't have to work for it. The money, the reward, came without the risk. Not that Miss Sticky Fingers was opposed, as there was a particular rush that came along with a good lift. Though, for this moment, Maya was on her way home to soak her feet and put on a face mask. So, for today, and now maybe tomorrow, the citizens of Vancouver were safe from the hustler. "This is good karma for you and saves me lots of pain. Thank you." The money was retrieved and safely into her pocket when her offer was tossed out as an afterthought. "Want a coffee?"
location: any public setting status: open
Looking down at the money in Hadley couldn’t help but want to stuff it in her pocket and continue on. But if she did the woman knew that karma would come back around. It always did eventually, at least it did for her. Tapping the person on the shoulder, she out stretched the wad of cash. “Here, I think you dropped this.”

summary:
originally from just outside of madrid, spain, maya grew up with absentee parents who set a bad example for her. their relationship was toxic and emotionally abusive. her father had a lothario reputation and would open cheat on her mother — because of this maya has a very poor view on men.
her mother had some health and mental health issues that eventually led her to overdose on pain medication when maya was only 9 years old. since that night she has lived with guilt and ptsd from the loss.
much blame was placed on her father and because of that maya has not spoken to him since she was a teenager.
at 16/17 maya left spain and moved to new york where she worked many odd jobs, got accustomed to lying to get whatever she needed, and pushed her way through school. it was during this time her kleptomania habit began and it was mostly out of necessity, though as the thrill and reward built it became less of a means to survive and more of a compulsion/pleasure seeking.
aside from working at a hospital, maya also did home health by making house calls to clients in need of a nurse and this was where her kelpto habit really took off. she would steal small things from her clients/their homes, mostly medications, and sell them for money.
when she got in trouble for her antics maya moved west to vancouver where she found herself in the same line of work, doing the same things. only this time she’s much smarter when it comes to her thieving.

Quote
Sometimes, when I’m careless, I think survival is easy: you just keep moving forward with what you have, or what’s left of what you were given, until something changes—or you realize, at last, that you can change without disappearing, that all you had to do was wait until the storm passes you over and you find that—yes—your name is still attached to a living thing.
