I almost forgot!! Another clip of Spooky Kitaro 4 has surfaced!! This one is INCREDIBLY short (only a few seconds), but it gives us a glimpse as to what Kitaro and Medama Oyaji would’ve sound like. The original video had a really bad strobe effect from the CRT monitor, so I replaced it using the same footage with a DVD I own. Whatever, this is my last message to you ever so remember this, I thought you were such a great person which is why I admired you and wished I could be like you but of course you became like this. I always had your back whenever you had problems, I still forgave you even after you said I was manipulative (which btw effected me to the point where I'm afraid to talk about my feelings to anyone.) uh... you know that johny/elite vampire character is an antisemiic caricature, right? an extremely blatant and classic example? hes a rich and untrustworthy vampire who controls polticians from behind the scens and is literally called "Elite." please familiarize yourself w/ Jewish commentary on vampire characters...

Judging by the spelling I am fairly positive this is bait, but I will clarify this regardless because I have seen this mentioned once previously. His appearance is based on a friend of Mizuki's. Mizuki based a lot of his characters on different friends/work buddies he knew. Here he is drawn with Mizuki.

Besides that, most of Johnny's character is based on musicians from the time!! The title of the original rental manga chapter, "Johnny in the Mist", was most likely changed to "Vampire Elite" in later iterations because Johnny in the Mist was the name of a popular song at the time. His most defining characteristic is his guitar.

What iteration are you the most familiar with? There's so many interpretations of Gegege no Kitaro and Johnny's motivation has changed many times. In the fourth anime, he only sucks the blood of smart/rich women to help get his sister to turn into a vampire. The sixth anime did not handle his character very well, but taking everything else into consideration I still wouldn't call him an antisemitic stereotype. If anything, the sixth anime makes him more of a homophobic stereotype by having him only prey on young men.

Sorry if this is a stupid and common question to ask, but where do you usually find the stuff/info you find? What sort of websites? Especially the REALLY old and obscure stuff like fan films and doujins

This is a very hard question to answer. It entirely depends on the resources you have available.

I've been studying Japanese for over two years now, and even though I'm still a beginner, I'm able to navigate the language enough to the point where I can search for these things pretty well. Even before that, I was lucky enough to have (and still have) a friend who translates stuff as a side job. Most people don't have those resources.

And even then, I sort of just... stumble across these things on accident. I found a poster for the La Moon fan film on Mandarake about a year ago while searching through Google images. I wasn't trying to find it, and I thought it was a fake at first lol

Unfortunately, I haven't really found a site that specializes in old doujinshis like the ones La Moon made. Most sites specialize in newer, NSFW ones, so it can be a nightmare to navigate. Your best bet is to use a proxy service like Buyee or ZenMarket, and check second-hand shops periodically. Do your research before using a proxy service though, because shipping prices can be INSANE depending on where you live.

tysm for documenting kitaro stuff! on the topic of obscure mizuki/kitaro content, do you happen to have anything on the manga セクハラ妖怪いやみ? (careful looking that up!) i've heard it is the last gegege no kitaro manga created by mizuki himself before he retired. unfortunately one of the sites with info on it is a dead link.

Disclaimer for my readers: This title literally translates to "Sexual Harrassment Yokai Iyami" and Iyami himself is a "predatory man in a dress" stereotype so be warned before you start googling anything.

Yeah, there was some debate as to whether or not the story was done by Mizuki for awhile. But since it was included in the definitive works collection then that basically guarantees it was him. The definitive works series didn't include any of the Saishinban volumes that he didn't directly illustrate, as an example. idk for sure whether or not this was the last story he made before he retired, but yeah, he'd go on to basically retcon his other NSFW parody series Zoku GGGnK and IIRC he said something along the lines of "adding sex to Kitaro was a bad idea." lol. If I had to guess this was basically just one final send-off before he retired. Just do the craziest most ridiculous story he can think of and publish it in an underground dirty magazine. That's just speculation though. I don't know much about this chapter because 1. Like Mizuki's other NSFW parodies it's sort of rancid and REALLY weird. And 2. Even on the Japanese side of the internet I don't really see anyone talk about this chapter.

Some other juicy tidbits:

The plot of the story is about a Furby (I believe her name is Shiita judging by the dialogue of the older Furbys? But my Japanese isn’t the best.) making a cake for her mother, but it’s stolen by Shelby!! Shiita puts the blame on a little Furby named Chibi-Chan.

The villain of this story is Shelby!! I’m not sure if this was a one-time thing, or if he was a reoccuring villain.

So far, this is the only issue of Shougaku Sannensei I own. But I hope to scan more of these in the future!!

Yes!! The settei book I bought had exactly one sheet for him... I have a hunch that they mashed up a bunch of different sheets together with the way it was formatted, though. I haven't ran into any loose sheets of him in my travels, but if I do find any, I will scan them and archive them, too!!

This is from my old scanner. With my new scanner, the resolution should look a lot nicer. Unfortunately, this one page was RIGHT on the spine of the book, so you can see how there's some warping on the left side. When I go to rescan it, I fully intend to get something much better. From my YouTube channel!! Here is a quick little comparison video between the original Japanese audio and the Spacetoon Indonesian Dub of the third Gegege no Kitaro anime!!

The Spacetoon Indonesian Dub is very rare... I’ve only ever found a few clips of it!! To my knowledge, there’s only two other international dubs of the 1985 series: A Korean Dub, and a possible Cantonese/Mandarin Dub... both seem to be lost media, too.
