all the thirsting aside, this is why I adore this character so, SO much.
idk i just. i gotta say there is something so powerful about having two alpha male coded characters discussing their emotions on a rooftop while grappling with overt suicidality and having the most alpha of the two not only providing emotional support and words of affirmation but actively endorsing therapy. admitting that he goes and it helps. do you understand how insane that is. they really wrote jack abbot to be in the middle of a venn diagram of suicidal demographics and said we're not going to leave him there, we're going to make him be the one who is advocating for the mental health care of healthcare workers. Do you get this. he's a white male veteran between like 18-50 who undoubtedly has access to a firearm. he's disabled, he works in emergency medicine as an attending and we have no idea what kind of support system he has outside of work. like. that is a man i would be actively worried about in my workplace. that is a man who knows how to kill himself and make it stick. and he's talking about his therapist out in the open. the amount of stigma and internalized masculine ideals and military masculinity he has worked through. do you. do you understand. do you understand what an incredible character jack abbot is. i'm tearing up. robby is terrified someone will find out he has ptsd and panic attacks and jack is telling him it's okay. implying he has them too. it's okay because you came out and went right back in it. you were who we needed you to be, and it wasn't fair and it's okay to not be okay. it's okay to need help. jack. jack abbot said those things.
jack abbot you have my entire heart

We were robbed! I want them abbot patient interactionsssplssjdfkjsdf and also that meow. and a good #everybodylovesabbot trope, like it's a thing they chide him for. Someone printed a shirt as a joke. Whenever food or flowers show up there's a betting pool on whose patient sent it and he's always at the top of the list. Also, what an interesting line for Collins, given the context we learn later.

I love a good "off duty impromptu life saving" trope. Including if it's not life or death. I wanna see more Jack patient interactions in S2. Mass casualty heroics are great, but how does he calm a parent about their child's injury? How was he with Kristi, actually? I wanna see him defuse difficult situations, I wanna see him being so good with ppls kids, I wanna see his pointed glare silence parents who were about to argue at bedside, I wanna see his gruff exterior break and get soft spoken and empathetic sometimes, I wanna see him awkwardly offer to get a female dr when a teen needs a pelvic, I wanna see him talk someone through their treatment options, I wanna see him use humour to lighten the mood, I wanna see him listen to his patients, OH MY GOD, I wanna see him with a scared patient who might be getting an amputation and thinks their life is over, I wanna see him being excellent all over the place. Nay, I don't want it, I NEED IT. If anyone digs "dr stumbling onto medical emergency on holiday", try this: https://roborman.com/stimulus/stimulus-podcast-56-rescue-in-the-jungle/
you know Robby and Abbot would rock paper scissors over who has to respond to the “is there a doctor here” situations in public places

I'm starting to age into all these fictional dilfs and it's a problem. Like I'm in the throes of fictional character besottedness over here. Is this just going to keep happening?

I’m here for the Abbot smut- but I need that man to get stabbed. Or something. I need to know what kind of patient he is.
Does he resist? Does he demand for them to put the trauma shears away, he just got these pants dammit? Or- he clearly has experience on both sides of this coin so maybe he understands the protocols and is super helpful? Answers all the mental status questions without snark because he knows figuring out if a patient is altered or sarcastic is added mental load? Does he hitch his sleeve and turn his arm for the IV? Does he pre-empt instructions like when to breathe in for auscultation/ultrasound/imaging? Does he give relevant medical stats before they can even ask “no blood thinners, last meal 5 hours ago”
Oh, but can he still not help but backseat drive a little bit- but in a helpful way? “My left AC is good, make it a 16 gage.” Or maybe adds key details as the team discusses his injury and treatment plan? “Nn.. I’m getting shoulder pain- kehr’s sign..” Does he recount the injury in detail despite it being hard to recount exactly how someone got the drop on him? Does he recognise that leadership and masculinity include letting others carry him through this without pretending not to need pain meds?
And when does the pain and fear seep through? Does he seek comfort? Does he reach out for someone’s hand or search for someone’s eyes? Does he wordlessly signal that he needs some reassurance once the acute stuff is handled for the moment?
Does it bring back traumatic memories? Was the last time he was laid out in a trauma bay when he lost his leg? If his good leg has any numbness or anything does he freak out a bit, under the surface? Does Robby know this and know exactly how to assure him?
No I’m not gonna pretend to be normal about this at all.

To my trans and non-binary folks out there. I can't imagine how much it must hurt down to your bones to have your leaders reject your very existence- and often family members too. Please, please stay in the world, you are valuable, you are worthy, your existence is the undeniable truth.

Final Pre-Election 2024 Anti-Trans Risk Assessment Map
Tumblr media
Erin Reed has presented a new version of her Anti-Trans Risk Assessment Map over at Erin in the Morning.
She writes:
The elections have tightened across the United States, and anti-trans ads have become a major part of the 2024 campaign cycle. As such, the risk has substantially raised for nationwide laws targeting transgender people in the coming years for both youth and adults. For states, the state of Texas has been upgraded to Do Not Travel, only the second state to receive such a recommendation. This comes as Odessa, Texas becomes the first city in the nation to pass a $10,000 bounty on transgender people inside of bathrooms.

[rises briefly from endless hiatus] This is scrumptious. Thank you for the gift of these gifs! My understanding is that this wouldn't happen- intubated patients are usually sedated they don't just wake up spontaneously. Also that ET seems way too short and free of goop. No idea, but coughing while intubated surely doesn't sound like it normally would, either? Asking for a friend. And yet, this is still one of my fav tropes. Probably because it's a multi-whammy: character is being cared for (check), is acutely vulnerable (ding ding ding) and also has to choose to cooperate with the help despite it being invasive and uncomfortable (ugh yes). I just wish it was more accurate, or there was a way to portray something similar that has the same whumpiness-profile but with more accuracy. If you're in DE you can find the link to 10x26 here: https://www.fernsehserien.de/bettys-diagnose/episodenguide/staffel-10/28011/2
..and if you speak German you get additional whumpiness points from dialogue, which is roughly: everything's okay, it's okay, it's almost over, almost over hold on Lukas, keep your eyes open, stay here, eyes open you gave us quite a scare

Note
so does transplant whump the doctors? or just random patients?
They literally whump two main characters in the first episode, another has a heart condition, the random-patient-whump is also relatively good, and in the latest one another main char gets punched in the face and gets all emasculated-complex about it and has flashbacks and it’s.. just.. go watch it.

@fyeahvulnerablemen Ok, not only is Transplant just a medical whumpers wet dream, but the cast is adorable, diverse, and (my fav) there’s a very close-knit work-family vibe happening.
