Text
After even just a week of therapy, changing medication, and actually finding a psychiatrist that cares, I'm starting to think maybe there is hope. Maybe I don't always have to be suffering.

Hey everyone!
I just wanted to tell you a little about a short film I wrote & directed called Thornbird, and the reason I made it.
Thornbird is a short fairytale about a young girl who finds a magic mask that transports her into a dreamworld where she must confront her fears.
Why did I make it?
Thornbird is a humble little film, I wrote the script in an evening and we shot it in 2 days on a $200 budget, with a lot of people giving their time and energy for free. It isn’t perfect but we are all still really proud of the way it came out.
The film is inspired by a Celtic myth, but it addresses the very real issues that many people (especially young women) face everyday; struggles with self worth, body image, and self harm. I have a younger sister and I became angry at all the negativity I saw being directed towards her from the media and even her peers, telling her what dimensions and weight she should be, why she wasn’t “beautiful” and “worth” as much as so and so. It breaks my heart to know so many young people, from pre-teens to college age, feel so worthless and unworthy and are lost in streams of social media, commercials, and school hallways that reaffirm these fears and anxieties.
Each person is beautiful, it isn’t up for debate or subjective opinion. Every human has worth and purpose, in the simplest act of breathing to the amazing ability to think and dance and laugh and sing. The ability to create songs, paintings, stories, and poems. The ability to feed someone who is hungry, or embrace someone who is sad. The ability to love and be loved.
Each and every person has something to contribute to the world and to the people around them.
Now I couldn’t put all of that into this film, but ultimately that is the underlying theme. My goal for Thornbird is to encourage young women to realize their worth, beauty, and strength. And to encourage all of us to realize there are so many around us that are struggling and hurting, that need our encouragement, support, and love.
The film is completed and now is screening in film festivals across the USA and internationally, we even picked up some awards (huzzah!). If you are interested in the film (for more news, stories, and screening info) please like our Facebook page and our twitter: @thornbirdmovie, we’d love your support!
And to anyone out there who is struggling, be brave… remember that you are strong and beautiful and worthy of every breath. You are a life, a story, a song. You have always been and will always be.
- Jonathan Stutzman  writer/director THORNBIRD #Thornbirdfilm #BeBrave (thedustdancestoo)
ps: This week we will be screening in Jackson, Mississippi at the Crossroads film festival alongside a lot of great films including THE HOLLARS starring Jon Krasinski, Anna Kendrick, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead! If you are in the area, come out to support Thornbird and the festival!
