10 Fun Facts about the Historic Royal Palaces

Back in May of this year, we excitedly embarked on one of our favourite ambassadorships to date. Over the course of the summer months, we were invited to discover the UK’s Historic Royal Palaces. From learning about the Tudors at Hampton Court Palace, the Victorians at Kensington Palace and modern history at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed a summer brimming with history, culture and awe-inspiring architecture. To round up our ambassadorship, we’ve compiled some of our favourite facts about the palaces (and the token castle); all of which we’ve learnt along the way. They are the type of facts that are ideal for squirrelling away for the next pub quiz, and we hope you find them as delightfully quirky as we did. A Day Out In Cambridge & A Stay At The University Arms

Our day out in Cambridge came about thanks to a kind invitation from the University Arms.  Rumoured to be Cambridge’s oldest hotel, the University Arms has been standing guard over the city’s windswept Parker’s Piece for over a century. Beginning life as a turreted coaching inn, before falling victim to 1960s functionalism and its fondness for tarmacked carparks, the University Arms has assumed many guises. However, and following its most ambitious makeover yet, this Cambridge institution has now taken on a new role: this time as Cambridge’s coolest hotel. Following an £80 million refurbishment and a helping hand from architect John Simpson and designer Martin Brudzinksi, the University Arms – a now portico fronted vision in white – is the place to come for sophisticated cocktails, mouth-watering meals and afternoon tea enjoyed amongst crowded mahogany bookshelves. What To Do In Belfast: Exploring the City in a Day

A city that was in the grips of a civil war just 40 years ago, Belfast is a destination that has undergone a dazzling transformation. Once the industrial hub that built and launched the ill-fated Titanic, Belfast has since blossomed into a vibrant and fun city. It’s a place where students, locals and tourists gather for evenings of live music, dancing and socialising, and sleek new museums dwarf the city’s skyline. As advocates of the microadventure and holidaying closer to home, we were thrilled to be invited to visit the city as part of our wider Historic Royal Palaces ambassadorship. Due to visit the newly opened Hillsborough Castle, we were fortunate enough to also squeeze in a whirlwind sight-seeing day in Belfast. Historic Royal Palaces Membership: Kew Palace

Our day trip to Kew Palace came about thanks to our (paid) ambassadorship with Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). Throughout the summer months, we will be using our Historic Royal Palaces membership to gain access to some of the country’s most beautiful palaces; exploring the bedrooms and ballrooms once graced by wayward kings and illustrious queens. The sun beaming down, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be headed than Kew Palace and its surrounding Royal Botanic Gardens. The Perfect Exmoor Holiday Cottage: A Weekend in Dulverton

With England in full bloom and the temperatures rising, we decided to head to the wilderness of Exmoor National Park, for a weekend of walking, ice-cream tasting and general lazing. The Redevelopment of Hillsborough Castle

Our visit to explore the redevelopment of Hillsborough Castle came about thanks to our (paid) ambassadorship with Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). We were here to explore the redevelopment of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, located in north-west County Down. After a hot and no doubt nauseating coach ride, my classmates and I were deposited outside what is declared to be one of England’s finest Tudor structures. I remember feeling a bit confused.
