Oh, but Wu Xi is everything Helian Yi could not be to Jing Qi. 

He is the one who sees him. Who waits for him patiently for half a year to return, while Helian Yi first and foremost waits for results, not the person. 

It's not even subtext. That one is pretty much text. But it's more than that. 

Throughout the entire story, Helian Yi and Jing Qi are connected through their scheming of getting HY on the throne. From what we learn of Jing Qi's first lifetime, it seems to have been the same back then. 

Wu Xi is the only one not connected to that plot at all. He does not care about it much. He is around solely for Jing Qi, only interested in him as a person, does not actually need him to succeed on his own throne, he has that baby in the bag. 

During every lifetime, Helian Yi finds something more important than Jing Qi. Something to take his attention. To keep him from being with Jing Qi. 

Wu Xi, on the other hand? He chooses to place Jing Qi first. When Helian Yi marries an official consort, Wu Xi decides that he will only marry Jing Qi. Who cares about offspring, or the opinions of others? Who cares that he is state leader and has to protect his image? He marries for love, while Helian Yi eschews love to marry. 

Wu Xi chooses Jing Qi and does so aggressively. No subtext. Boy goes all out. After six (five) lifetimes of having to run after his fated love, Jing Qi now gets to be the one who is courted. He does not have to work for this love, does not have to sacrifice, never. He is allowed to take and indulge and let himself be loved, just like that. 

For five lifetimes, Helian Yi was the source of Jing Qi's death. Either he killed him outright, or he caused his death. But then, when Jing Qi is once again this close to dying for him, practically already given up on life, Wu Xi appears and saves him. Wu Xi does not demand that Jing Qi dies for him, he demands that Jing Qi lives for him. 

Helian Yi is Jing Qi's death. 

Wu Xi is his life.

Meet Wei Wuji, also known as Lord Xinling, the second Prince of Wei Kingdom (circa 2nd century BCE), the first person in recorded history to handle a Tiger Tally, and very very likely to be the real-life basis for Wei Wuxian. 

How very likely? Well, there’s no word of god, of course. But I’ll just let the facts speak for themselves, and you be the judge.

Honestly, this is one of my absolute favourite songs from the Word of Honor ost and I was so shocked that there are no translations of it?? Atleast I can't find them and so I had to do this because Zuì Jiāng Yuè is an absolutely beautiful song that perfectly embodies the excitement and refreshing feeling of young love while describing Weining and Xiang's relationship in the lyrics. Please take the translation with a grain of salt because I don't know any Chinese and this is the result of me trying to make sense of the lyrics with Google translate and Pleco. Consider it a machine translation if you must, with slight modifications here and there by me.

I was planning to do a whole animatic for ZZ because I love him so much and I love the quartet so much and I had this whole plot planned for it but just... midway through, I decided to drop it cause I'm just SO bad at drawing and this is so difficult like; I have so much appreciation for the people who make animatics now. It looks easy but it's a different kind of hard compared to drawing like one scene.

but since I did work hard on some of it, I thought, why not post it? :D when I tell you that I had a plot in mind!! if you wanna hear the gist of it, it's basically like:

Zizhen being lonely and dramatic about it while watching wangxian (because they are the standard, ofc) and throughout the whole thing, the rest of the quartet are just watching him secretly, wondering why he is sad. Eventually, they get it and they all tell him off at the end that he's not lonely and he can have all the hugs and kisses and everything with them ❤️

It's not supposed to be romantic but it can be taken whichever way honestly. The point was that yeah we all want romance in our life (I mean, I relate to the song so I understand the feelings) but having friends who are there for you every time is somehow even better. For me, the junior quartet is that friendgroup.

Like they're ready to give him hugs when he wants them. Forehead kisses, hand holding, physical affection– everything. They listen to him talk about his interests with fondness even if they don't really understand it. They'll give their shoulders when he needs to cry. They'll listen when he wants to vent. That kind of friendship is worth just as much as a romantic relationship, if not more.

Anyway, it was supposed to half crack and half feels and it's... a mess lmao. Y'all should see my storyboards (?) for this, that's a whole freaking circus that I'll be ashamed of if anyone irl saw 😭
