Don't panic. Clip Studio is NOT becoming the next Adobe.

To quickly explain this in a bit more digestible way:

Current version (1.x) will NOT suddenly become a subscription, it stays a one-time purchase. You bought it, you got it.

With release of 2.x in 2023, 1.x will still receive stability/performance/bug fix updates but no more new features

When 3.x is released down the road, 1.x will no longer be supported (you can still use it, it just won't get any more fixes)

2.0 can be bought as one-time purchase but any new features starting 2.1 will not be included

To get new features from 2.1 and onward, you need to subscribe to Update Pass (no price yet but it's not Adobe so I doubt it will be anything insane)

As before, 2.x will get free stability/performance/bug fix updates until it's not supported anymore with release of 4.x

The whole cycle continues like this with new versions in the future.

Please understand that CSP, just like Tumblr, needs money to continue existing. Don't boycott them, they are trying to stay afloat while still being as user friendly as they can.

Besides you don't even need all the newest features, the program works fantastic as it is.

clip studio paint just announced that it is releasing a "2.0" version in 2023 which will require a new one time purchase or active subscription. users who do not purchase the new 2023 version will no longer receive feature updates, but will still have access to the "1.x" version forever. users who do not purchase subscriptions will not receive updates to the 2.0 version until 3.0, which will also require a separate "one time" purchase. they are basically phasing out functional one time purchase plans by forcing you to subscribe to continue getting updates, or to continue buying each new major version at whatever interval they are released.
