How Mera and Takashi Met and Fell in Love

They definitely didn’t like each other when they first met. They met when Takashi was (14) in his last year of junior high and Mera was (13) in her next-to-last year of junior high. Takashi was popular despite having very few friends. He was popular among the ladies, that is. He was the good-looking, hard to get, quiet upperclassman. Mera thought he was kind of an ass because of how often he turned people away. She didn’t know at the time that he had been bullied a lot and had trouble speaking his thoughts properly.

Despite her ill feelings towards him, she was very supportive when one of her closest friends, Niko, admitted to her that she had a crush on him. She helped her work up the courage to tell him. When news returned that he had “coldly” brushed her off and broken yet another girl’s heart, Mera took a stand.

During lunch out in the courtyard, Mera confronted Takashi. “What the hell is wrong with you!? Do you get off on making people feel bad?”

Takashi avoided eye contact. Mera’s outburst had caught the attention of several students. “No,” he whispered, “I don’t. I didn’t mean to upset anyone.”

“Ugh! Didn’t mean to- You’ve broken the hearts of many girls, including my best friend! I don’t know what they see in you, because from where I’m standing, you seem like a cold, narcissistic ass! I want you to apologize to my friend!”

“I didn’t do anything wrong.” Takashi was calm, but there was an angry glint in his eye. You can’t make me apologize for something that wasn’t my fault.”

Mera grinned menacingly. “We’ll see about that.”

She started humming a tune that Takashi thought he’d heard on the radio once before. His body suddenly went slack, out of his control, but he panicked momentarily in his mind. Takashi hadn’t known this girl had a mind control quirk. His feet started moving towards her without his permission, and his fingers were tingling. She sang out, “Apologise to Niko” and he was sure that was what he was about to do. He had to admit, she had a nice voice, but it was something he now hated.

Takashi watched her take a deep breath, and his fingers tingled. He could move them when she braked. He was almost past her, but he grabbed her hand and rasped out “Shut up”. Mera’s voice quieted. She opened her mouth but no noise came out. Takashi could move freely now. He pushed her down into the grass and leaned over her. He smiled, something that almost no one at that school had seen. “Maybe you’re just jealous." Then he grimaced at her. “Know your place before I force you into it.” He got up and left.

Mera laid there in the grass, grasping her throat and breathing deeply. No one had ever caught her pattern. No one else took advantage of the time she needed to breathe. And that asshole had. Most of the people that had been watching dispersed. Niko, who had been in the crowd, ran over and pulled her up. “Are you okay?” There were tears in Mera’s eyes. She was scared. What if she never got her voice back? She shook her head. “We should tell a teacher.” Mera shook her head again and mimicked a pen.

They found a pen and paper, and Mera wrote “We can’t tell a teacher because I used my quirk on him too. I’ll get in trouble too.”

“Then what do we do?”

She scribbled on the paper again. “Do we know if he can even return my voice?” Niko shrugged and hugged Mera.

“I’ll do everything I can to help you get back to normal.”

One week later

Niko has been trying nonstop to get Takashi to give Mera’s voice back. Mera’s been faking a cold so people don’t ask about her losing her voice. Takashi is still mad though and he’s started ignoring Niko’s attempts to talk to him.

Mera caught up with Takashi in the hall at the end of the school day. She pulled him into an empty classroom and sat him down at a desk. She stood up by the chalkboard and wrote out “What do I have to do to get my voice back?” Takashi shrugged. “Please,” she wrote.

“Fine,” he sighed. He got up from the desk. He made no requests. He walked up to her. She flinched back and her back met the blackboard. Takashi grabbed her hand and leaned in close enough that their noses were almost touching. “Speak up.”

“What?” Mera covered her mouth with her hand. She spoke. Takashi left after that.

After that incident where they first met, Takashi continued to tease Mera and flirt with her for months, driving other girls at the school mad. Mera hated the attention and actively tried to avoid him. By the end of that school year, Mera had started playing into the flirting and they were good friends. Takashi was moving on to high school though, so Mera started only seeing him outside of school. They hung out nearly every weekend and on a lot of school days.

A year passed, and they were inseparable. Mera was going for the entrance exam at UA.

It had been about a week since the entrance exam. Mera was feeling good about it, and the letter finally came. She sat with it on her desk for about an hour before she decided she’d wait and open it with Takashi.

He came over the day after Mera received the letter. They were hanging out in her room listening to a rerun of Present Mic’s radio show. “Mer, are you okay? You’re squirming a lot.”

“Sorry. It’s just…” Takashi got up off the bed and turned off the radio. “It’s just the letter came.”

“It did? Did you get in?”

“I don’t know.” She wrung her hands and moved towards Takashi and the desk. “I didn’t want to open it on my own.”

Takashi picked the envelope up off her desk and handed it to her. “I’m here now, so…”

Mera opened the envelope and took the player out. The principal popped up and gave a “hi, how are you, we’re glad you’re here” speech. Takashi wiped his hand down his face, knowing the principal liked to take his time with the speeches. Finally, the great words came:

“I am overjoyed to welcome you to our school.”

Mera squealed and jumped into Takashi’s arms. “I’m so proud of you!” Takashi swung her around, nearly knocking the radio off of the desk. He kissed her midswing and then put her down, with her still in his arms. “Shit my bad. I uh-”

She turned around in his arms and hid her face in his chest. “There’s nothing wrong with a celebratory kiss. Right?”

Takashi’s face was almost as red as his hair. “Right.”

“Do you want to celebrate again?” Mera was grinning up at him.

“Definitely.”

And that was the start of Takashi and Mera’s romantic relationship. They’re still together over a year later.

Explanation: By singing, humming, or whistling she can entrance and control up to three people, animals, or objects at a time. The people and/or animals being controlled are not aware they're being controlled when under her influence. She does not have to sing/hum/whistle for the whole time she's controlling them, she just has to catch their attention. At her current level, Mera can keep these things under her control for up to eight minutes at a time.

When Mera was little, she got caught by her mom stealing a candy bar from a store and she was using her quirk to make the store clerk let her get away with it.
