Some old art of my Owlk engineer, Eris, designing the Stranger's solar sails! Enjoy a big ramble about him and his job because I love this silly man:

Eris works on the design team for the Owlk space program, specialising in energy and propulsion technologies for the ships, satellites, and probes. Having a design philosophy of functionality and beauty, Eris enjoys going all-out with his work. He has received special recognition for his solar panel designs in particular, which borrowed from the unparalleled efficiency found in photosynthesizing plants.

When designing the Stranger's solar sails, Eris took inspiration from plants, but also the opening of insect elytra; the ballooning behaviours of silk-producing invertebrates, in which they sail from tree to tree using electric fields and air currents; and how flying creatures will use thermal updrafts to soar higher while expending less energy. Already familiar with how solar energy impacts technology from his work on solar panels, he proposed the use of this energy to propel the Stranger through space.

As travelling the distance between stars presented the major roadblock in the plan to reach the Eye (regarded as the Interstellar Propulsion Problem), Eris was lauded for his contributions, promoted to being one of the main engineers overseeing the Stranger's design.

When designing for a project, Eris uses all of the tools at his disposal. His first weapon of choice is always his pencil, and he will sketch out potential sources of inspiration on paper until the design concept begins to take form. Based on the initial project parameters he's been given, he drafts up a blueprint for his components.

Next, he must further conceptualise his designs. This is where the most valuable tool of the trade comes into play—the Vision Torch! Vision Torches serve many purposes for Owlks, from allowing them to nonverbally communicate to creating photographs from memory alone. Owlk engineers LOVE Vision Torches for how easy they make effectively communicating ideas. They allow concepts to be visualised in 3D, basic functionality to be shown through animations, and are even able to interface with computers. Eris might even 3D print a model using a Vision Torch to help him visualise his concepts as he works.

The space program is extremely collaborative, and Eris works on just a small part of the overall project, so being able to easily share ideas with others and see how all the individual components of a satellite or ship interact is vital. When discussing with more than a single other Owlk, Eris can use a Vision Torch linked to a holographic display to present concepts to a crowd. Concepts can also be tweaked in real time this way!

With a Vision Torch, concepts can also be directly uploaded to a computer terminal. This is where a lot of the real work gets done - calculating weight, materials needed, stress testing in simulations, calculating trajectories, making precise tweaks to finalize the design, you name it. This also allows other Owlks working closely with Eris to access the most current design for their own tests.

This is an iterative process - as other Owlks finalize their components, as weight limitations are further restrained and material needs are calculated, Eris often has to go back to an earlier step and rework his concept. Fortunately, he thoroughly enjoys getting to be creative in his work (and doing math) and treats every project as a puzzle that needs to be solved! The only time when he's not excited to go back to the drawing board is when a last-minute adjustment from his peers means he needs to work long hours to get his work done in time for launch.

Older Than the Universe — Chapter 35: The Vessel

I've been very excited to post this chapter, not only because I had a ton of fun writing it (and am so eager to hear your thoughts) but also because it brings us to a big milestone for OTTU!

We've now hit over 200 000 published words! I just want to give a huge thanks to everyone who's been there since word one, and to everyone who's read all 200 000 of those words I've written. I know it's a big time commitment, and I'm so grateful to have had so many people interested in this story of mine. I hope you continue to enjoy the chapters I put out!

Favourite colour: I love blues and greens! If I had to pick one of each I'd go for a nice mossy green and a rainy day blue.

Currently reading: I've just finished The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, which was a very sweet and cosy read (thank you @dekkiidan for the recommendation!). Next I'm going to jump back into reading The Little Book of Exoplanets by Joshua N. Winn, which is a great overview on how we detect exoplanets and what we know about them so far!

Tea or Coffee: TEA. I do not like coffee at all but I will drink upwards of 3-5 cups of tea a day haha.

Working on: A million things at once lol. Mostly I've been getting write-ups ready for future OWGS posts, but I've also been editing the next chapter of my fic Older Than the Universe and working on The Best the World Had to Offer. Hopefully updates for all of these things will be coming out soon!

Hello everyone! I have been working on this project for many, many months, if not a whole year by now -- but it is finally here! And so I present to you yet another documentation project:

The Outer Wilds Lore Map aims to be one big interactive web page containing as much of the OW lore as possible -- from physics data about how big (small, really) the planets are, to obscure fun facts about lore that could have been but was removed or retconned at some point, to whether or not Chert knows what Ash Twin looks like without its sand!

I have already spent a very long time writing it all in the tutorial and the coding itself, so I will rather let the images speak for themselves here. All I will say is that I have done everything I could in order to make it as intuitive and comfy an experience as possible. The lore is very lacking for now, and filling it will take a while -- but hey, wouldn't it be fun to do it with friends? If only in order to have people nag at me for all the typos, or if you disagree with something.

More mechanical drawings! This time, I designed Lari's ship!

Lari is an astronaut and geologist for Outer Wilds Ventures, launching in the midst of a huge design overhaul for their spaceships. As such, their ship has many unique and novel (at the time, anyway) specifications!

Lari launched between Chert and Riebeck, at the advent of retro-rockets and the repositioning of the thruster banks to the sides of the ships. While Riebeck's ship was an older model retrofitted with new technologies, Lari's ship was built new, and thus more closely resembles the modern chassis designs of Chert's, Gabbro's, and the Hatchling's ships.

Lari's ship is built small and sturdy, perfect for a mediocre pilot who rarely has a smooth landing. Lari packs plenty of provisions for their trips to space, typically spending just shy of a month camping in the field, with an extra barrel of sap wine (""water"") to spare in case they get any visits from their fellow Travellers. In addition to all the standard instrumentation, such as the Scout Launcher, Landing Camera, and Signalscope, Lari's ship comes equipped with a small robotic arm that can be used to take samples of rocks in space or in hazardous environments. The ship was built pre-autopilot, but will be updated as soon as the current version passes field tests.

The extension on the back of the ship was added by Tilley (@eruraima's Hearthian), an engineer and Lari's closest friend. The electrical panel was ripped off and added to the bottom of the extension, where everything was hooked back up nice and properly. Despite their efforts to work in secret, the "insignificant" addition was quickly noticed by Slate, who had a few choice words to say about the unvetted modification. The added storage lets Lari stay out in the field for longer and bring back more samples for Hearthbound geologists to study.

Welcome to the Outer Wilds Geological Survey!

Outer Wilds hosts a story like no other; one that spans eons and is pieced together across planets. However, you may not have noticed the subtler story beneath the one we know and love - the one told through the rocks that paint the world. What rocks occur where, their shapes, colouration, and orientation, can all give an indication to a broader geological history.

Here, we aim to survey the Outer Wilds and explore what the rocks say about mineralogy, volcanic activity, major historical and geological events, and even planetary formation! From the geyser mountains of Timber Hearth, to the labyrinthine caves of Ember Twin, to the floating islands of Giant's Deep - We plan on exploring all major sites of interest and come up with our best explanations of the geology and what it means for the history of the Outer Wilds solar system.

[5] Are they good at keeping secrets?

Not at all. LOL. Eris is quite the gossip, so harmless secrets tend to be pretty readily circulated by him. One of his favourite hobbies is meeting with the other village socialites over a shared bottle of wine and getting updated on the latest news. Still, he's not meanspirited, and he'll try his best to keep secrets that he knows should be kept, with variable success. He won't bring them up himself, but when directly asked, it's obvious he's hiding something. He'll look away, change the topic, nervously laugh, and fidget. Hopefully whoever is asking won't press much further...

[15] How do they act around people they don’t like?

Eris loves people! There are very few people he dislikes. With those rare few he can't stand, he usually acts just the same as with people he enjoys the company of—polite small talk, jokes, and compliments. Eris was raised to always make a good impression, and how others perceive him is very important to him. Very often, the people he doesn't like are none the wiser about his true feelings towards them.

There are a couple of people he can't keep up this guise around, however. For example, his ex-partner, Descant—with him, Eris goes out of his way to avoid him to prevent any uncomfortable interactions.

[40] How picky they are with food, do they have specific dietary requirements based on their health or culture?

As an Owlk, Eris is an obligate carnivore! He enjoys a protein-rich diet of many different meats from the creatures that inhabit the home moon, both domesticated and wild, supplemented with nuts and grains and less-nutritional treats like fruits. He can be a picky eater at times, and is definitely less adventurous alone than if he goes to the marketplace with his friends (in which case he's much more likely to be coaxed into trying something new). He also has a bad habit of skipping meals when working, and often chooses the convenience of buying food over making something healthier himself. Generally, he prefers grilled meats, slathered in flavourful sauces or marinades, and stews, but will also eat pretty much anything his partner Sedska makes him!

[44] On a party, where would you find them?

Everywhere! Eris is very sociable, and won't just mingle with other social people. He'll try to talk with everyone, from his friends, to acquaintances, to strangers. He enjoys getting to know the people who reside in his town, and if he has the time, always makes an effort to break any more introverted folks out of their shells.

[55] How long does it take for them to make a new place feel like home, and what do they need for it?

Aw, this is a lovely question! Eris loves decorating, and his living space is always filled with memories he's made. Photographs taken with a camera or pulled from a vision torch, blueprints he's drafted of spacecraft he's worked on, and paintings he's made of plants and landscapes fill the walls, and gifts he's received from friends and family clutter every shelf. Even so, this is never enough to really make a place feel like home. When living alone, Eris doesn't spend much time at his cabin, quick to get lonely and stir-crazy. He'll even prefer working late in his office, where there is work to keep him busy and people to talk to.

For this reason, the most important thing for Eris to feel at home is to have company—home is more of a person for him than it is a place. His sister, his best friend, and his partner all fill this role for him, and he's comfortable being anywhere as long as he has one of them with him.

These were some very good questions and I had to spend a bit of time really mulling them over! I hope the answers are interesting!

For Syen:

[2] How does their social personality differ from how they act when they’re alone?

Syen has pretty severe social anxiety, so they act very differently around others than when alone or with close friends. With others, even those they're familiar with in the village, they tend to act more closed off, aloof, and disinterested in conversation. Syen craves social interaction, but they aren't sure how to go about talking with others, especially when rambling about their interests doesn't go well. They've learned shrink into themself and act small in public settings as not to be a bother instead of reaching out to others.

When alone, however, Syen is much more confident in themself, taking up more space and fidgeting less. They still get lonely, but they certainly feel more at ease with themself when out in nature doing field work. It's a side of them that Lari gets to see more of as the two of them grow closer!

[24] How hard it is for them to not allow their emotions to cloud their judgement?

They certainly try their best to keep their head on straight, but Syen can very much let their emotions get in the way of logic. When it comes to social matters, Syen is easily dissuaded by their anxieties about coming across as "odd" or imposing. They can also get worked up over the safety of their close friends and loved ones. Their anxiety for their friends is what leads to them confess their romantic feelings for Lari—worried that they might not come back from space, Syen tells them how they feel before their friend leaves for their first solo launch.

[57] What was the most stupid or dangerous thing they have ever done?

Despite growing up as "the good hatchling" of their cohort, Syen can be pretty reckless when doing field work on their own. Their favourite herpetofauna to study just so happen to be the ones living in the most dangerous environments, such as the sociable lizards that live in the nooks and crannies of the crater walls or the rare salamanders that reside in the high-altitude hot springs in the geyser mountains. Syen will occasionally ask Lari to belay for them, but more often than not, they go off adventuring alone, free soloing up unfamiliar rock faces when they can't be bothered to get their ropes out. This has led to a few instances of them falling and getting hurt, but luckily any broken bones happened within shouting distance of the village.

For Lari:

[7] Are they a good liar, and what would they probably lie about?

Lari isn't the best liar, and unfortunately has lied a lot throughout their life haha. As a hatchling, they would often make excuses to cover up any pranks they pulled or to get out of trouble, which was...often. If they weren't covering for themself, they'd be covering for a friend. In adulthood, though, they usually only tell white lies. Slate is the only exception—Lari is a pretty poor pilot and frequently gets on Slate's bad side for crashing their ship, and will eagerly lie to the engineer about what damage their ship accrued during their last research trip. These lies are pretty easily found out when Slate actually lays eyes on the ship in question.

[10] How quickly do they fall for someone?

It may not take a long time for Lari to fall for someone, but it certainly takes them a long time to separate romantic feelings from the feelings they have for their friends. They care very deeply for those close to them, and sometimes, like as with Syen, they can go a long time on the assumption that they're just very good buddies. It takes a couple of years for Lari to disentangle their feelings for their fellow field scientist, and even then, they don't confess out of fear for losing the platonic relationship they have. Fortunately, Syen makes the first move for them!

[30] What are their most healthy and most unhealthy coping mechanisms?

Oooh, great question!!! In terms of healthy coping mechanisms, Lari is generally pretty open about how they feel with their friends. With their close friends, they'll talk about their worries or insecurities, often seeking help with how to work through their problems.

Where this fails, however, is when Lari is trying to protect others, or when they lose someone who would have been their safety net. In this case, they lock up, refusing to talk about their feelings, and go off to be alone, pushing those who want to help away. Usually, they realise how unhealthy this is before any real damage is done, seeking out others for help and offering apologies for running off without warning.

AHHH so many great questions, thank you so much!!!!

It's always so helpful to actually get the thoughts I have for characters down on paper, and these questions really made me think about some more details for them!

I've put the answers below the cut so this post isn't terribly long haha.

[2] How does their social personality differ from how they act when they’re alone?

Coming out strong right out of the gate with this question haha. Mylo is definitely one to be more performative around others; they lay on the charisma thick, will be very social and playful, and they generally try to exude an air of confidence and carelessness. They are genuinely a very self-assured Hearthian, and they love cracking jokes and rarely take things seriously, but when they're alone, more of that self-doubt they experience does creep in. This is most evident in the months after losing their arm—outwardly, they stay positive, treating the incident more like a mild inconvenience than a life-altering event in an effort to cope with the adjustments they have to make. When they're alone and don't have to put on a brave face for their friends, the reality of losing their dominant hand really sets in, and they have quite a few nights where they just sit quietly in their cabin with that realisation, hoping they won't have to give up on their chemistry work because of that accident.

[11] What are small things that make them happy?

Despite being best known for chasing excitement in the village, Mylo has a deep appreciation for the quiet moments in life, too. They love spending time with their friend Stein, be it playfully teasing each other over the counter of Stein's bar, relaxing by the water just the two of them, or spending the evening in one of their cabins chatting with a good drink. Mylo takes a lot of pride in their work developing explosives, but those more subdued, everyday moments spent with their bud are their favourites.

[37] How would they spend a lazy day when they have nothing specific to do?

Mylo is...a bit of a troublemaker, even when they're older. They get a kick out of getting a rise out of people, and are easily bored. In the absence of any specific project to work on, their go-to hobby is first and foremostly annoying Stein, be it making bad puns, following them around, or flicking them playfully to rile them up. In the rare event that Stein doesn't retaliate in kind, Mylo will go try to bother someone else—or resort to their more dangerous pastime of throwing dynamite into an old quarry to see how much damage they can do.

Unfortunately, Mylo also enjoys picking up hatchling watch duty on their off days, and in their eyes they are the epitome of a good role model. At least they opt for firecrackers over dynamite when they take the older hatchlings out for some "chemistry lessons".

[39] What is their sleeping habits and favourite sleeping position, either alone and with someone?

I feel sorry for anyone who shares a bed with Mylo—they like to take up space as a rule and being asleep is no exception. Mylo is one of the taller Hearthians in the village and usually spreads out a lot when they sleep. When alone, this means long limbs draped over the bed. When with someone else, this means long limbs draped over their friend's face. Equally unfortunate is that they're a bit of a heavy sleeper, but at least they won't wake up when shoved off of someone in the middle of the night?

[41] What’s their usual morning routine?

Mylo is not a morning person, and their habit of staying up way too late means their "morning" routine is verging on an "afternoon" routine some days. After dragging themself from their sleep, they start their day with a quick wash-up followed by some stretches to help with the joint pain they experience. They don't always wear their prosthetic, but when they do, it's the first thing they put on. A sweater, coveralls or overalls, and their well-worn boots follow, their outfit finished off with their favourite cap. Once dressed, they'll fashion themself a good ol' mug of pine needle tea in their kitchen/chemistry lab (ignoring that their tea has a vaguely metallic taste to it) and either start on some work or venture out into the village to socialise!
