The Beheading of Holofernes

Both of these paintings portray a story in the Bible form which describes the story of Judith. The only difference is that the pinging on the left, is painted by my love, a woman painter called Artemisia Gentileschi, and the one of the right is painted by a man about 15 years earlier called Caravaggio. Both extraordinary painters during the baroque period. Can you tell the difference? To understand what Gentileschis was trying to accomplish you have to under stand the book of Judith and why she had to kill holofernis.

According to the story, a military commander named Holofernes had been dispatched by King Nebuchadnezzar on a punitive expedition against Israel. The Babylonians soon besieged the Israelite town of Bethulia, where Judith lived. He was so struck by her beauty he was basically like, be my wife now 😡 even though she was already married. Obviously her husband was like no, but Judith was like relax it’s fine. So in the night she and her hand maiden snuck into holofernis’s room and beheaded him in his sleep.

It is believed Gentileschis looked up to Judith and her ability to take power over a man like Holofernis dispute being a woman. In fact many of her paintings portray woman overpowering men which made her a controversial character during the renaissance. The reason she was like this deserves another post ENTIRELY

Notice how Gentileschis painting captures so much more emotion than Caravaggio’s? Both of them use the technique of tenebrism which is a technique that uses the contrast of light and dark shadows to convey a dramatic effect, so why does Gentileschis look so different?

Mainly, Caravaggio simply hasn’t been through what Gentileschis as.

Biblical paintings like this were very common during the renaissance so Caravaggio’s is likely a commission, and to him Judith is still just a woman. In his painting Judith is dainty and looks to holofernes as if she is fearful.

But the real Judith was not afraid.

Gentileschis painting is so full of anger and a scence of pure will power. It’s so in the moment as a contrast to Caravaggio’s. To Gentileschis Judith is a hero. Gentileschis’s painting is also thought to be more biblically accurate because Judith knew “I must do this for my people” and Gentileschis knew that too.

Double Black

Chuuya and Dazai's dynamic is so interesting me because dazai feels so far removed and rejected by society he feels 'no longer human' pun intended, while chuuya because of his ability his life style, absence of childhood and most obvious being compared to a God makes him feel 'no longer human' as well or as if he was never a human at all. Dazai and Chuuya are paired up as the double black for a reason and no doubt Mori knew that when he paired them. No matter how much they hated each other they understand each other on an unspoken, deeper level only the two of them will get.
