I'll try to give you the tldr of my previous answer. Im sad. Anyway, i started by mentioning books i read this year. Walking Practice by Dolki Min has a cannibal alien protagonist, but i found the execution overly preachy. Giving baby's first story about beauty standards, gender roles and overall queer themes. But its setting of Korean, from a Korean debut author, cannot be ignored. I may be familiar with questioning these things, but not everyone is, so i think it has its place despite not being life changing or anything for Me. Still, it could be worth a read, even i found myself getting attached to the protagonist towards the end when it was becoming more vulnerable (and i did quite enjoy the ending).

As for "alien metaphors in human characters... or are they?🤨" this year i read Earthlings by Sayaka Murata and Beautiful Star by Yukio Mishima. Love or hate the guy, i found the book gave me a lot to chew on and quite frankly i'll need to reread the 50 page confrontation between the opposing aliens a few more times to really digest everything properly. A book written during the cold war about humanity's fate feels awfully relevant nowadays too, no? Still, if you were looking for quick easy things to pass time with, I wouldnt call it at all a light read like the others i mentioned (Earthlings also has a lot of triggering elements but i find Murata's writing very accessible, really i recommend anything by her in general). Sneaking in my Venusian family short story i posted months ago as a rec here too bc it was inspired by something from Beautiful Star, namely the daughter's mysterious pregnancy.

As for manga, the GOAT Moto Hagio has quite a selection of sci fi works. They Were Eleven is her most famous one i think, but my personal favorite was A A'. Involving aliens, that is. My favorite sci fi work of hers in general is Otherworld Barbara, but that has more to do with dreams, human gene experiments, and psychology. Last month i read 2 other mangas involving aliens: Corespondence from the end of the universe, and Takopi's original sin. I cried until i couldnt breathe anymore with the former, and the latter was fine. Didnt leave as big of an impact as i expected based on the premise. Still, it's a short read. Ah, if youre sensitive to child abuse maybe skip this one. And Earthlings. Stardust Family is a short read i enjoyed more, but the alien element might actually be a spoiler. Umm. Well forget i said anything, but do give it a read too, i dont see many ppl talking about it. <-another manga i cried at this month.

Finally, if youre bored and were curious about the idol galaxy anime i mentioned, it's 4 eps long, from 1995, and simply called Idol Project.
