⁣Now that we know what sulfates are and what they do, should we be using them 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡? 🤔🧐⠀ ⠀ ⠀ On a regular basis – 𝕕𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕟𝕚𝕥𝕖𝕝𝕪 𝕟𝕠𝕥 ❌ Sulfates act aggressively on the cuticle, disturbing the pH 📊 and structure 🧬 of the hair. Regular use of sulfate hair products washes out vibrant colors, strips the hair of moisture and keratin, leaving hair dull and dry 🧽 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The only time sulfate shampoo should be used is 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. Your stylist may wash your hair with a deep cleansing shampoo, which contains “𝕔𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕘𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕤” (i.e. sulfates 🧼) that remove mineral deposits and product buildup in the hair. This is a NECESSARY step to prep your hair, like a clean slate, for the service.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ (Mineral buildup comes from hard water🚿 , pool water and products containing minerals. If not removed, minerals will chemically react upon contact with color or bleach, producing heat, smoke and irreparable damage ♨️)⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ After cleansing and coloring, the last important step is 𝕣𝕖𝕡𝕝𝕖𝕟𝕚𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘. Deep cleansing = deep treatment. Ⓐⓛⓦⓐⓨⓢ. Replenishing moisture, keratin, and vitamins will enhance your hair color vibrancy, shine, and manageability, and locking your color from fading too quickly 🔐⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ (I include a replenishing treatment with every color service for my clients. Have you ever tried a shampoo that didn’t lather up to your expectations? 🤬 I know I have. Since I was a kid, I always thought the more the shampoo lathers🛁, the better cleaning power it has. In a way, that’s true. With respect to hair, however, it’s a misconception sold to us by big brand names for many years in the form of sulfates, and most of the world buys it on a regular basis.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ What are sulfates?🤓📚⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Sulfuric acid reacts with another chemical to create sulfate. Most common synthetic sulfate based chemicals in hair products are known as 𝙨𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙮𝙡 𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙛𝙖𝙩𝙚 (SLS) and 𝙨𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙮𝙡 𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙛𝙖𝙩𝙚 (SLES).⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The main use for 𝐒𝐋𝐒 and 𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐒 in products is to create lather and give a strong impression of “cleaning power.” 💪🏼⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ So sulfates clean hair. What’s wrong with that?⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Let’s take a step back and talk about pH 📊(measure of alkalinity or acidity).⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The pH range of hair & scalp is acidic 4.5-5.5. The acidity of the scalp’s acid mantle is the skin’s way of protecting itself from bacteria, environmental pollutants and moisture loss. The acidity of the hair shaft keeps the cuticle lying flat to lock in 🔒 color and moisture.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The pH of water is 7 which technically neutral. However, it’s higher than pH of hair(4.5-5.5) which means: water will open the cuticle🔓and act as a catalyst in the absorption of almost anything into the hair (good or bad).⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The pH of SLS 7.5-8.5 and SLES 7.0-9.5. ⁣⁣That dreaded word - SILICONE! 😰🤭🥶🤬 Are silicones bad for your hair? My answer - it depends.⠀⠀ What are silicones? They come in different shapes and forms. Which is a good thing because each type of silicone breaks down differently. Collectively, they serve one major purpose - creating a layer of film. This film can vary in the way it forms (sticking, cross linking, etc) and hence varies in its longevity and effect on the hair.⠀⠀ The silicone film prevents anything from leaving or entering. Think of it as a ziplock bag. Once you put something inside the bag and close it, the bag will not spill and nor can anything enter the bag to contaminate the contents. Similarly, applying a conditioner or mask that contains silicones prevents anything from leaving or entering the hair shaft.⠀⠀ Creating a film can be a good thing. For example, you have very porous or damaged hair, struggle with flyaways, or your hair knots easily. Silicones are here for the rescue! They patch up and smooth out your porous hair, and voila. Your hair looks and feels smooth and shiny. However, what if you need to apply a toner? or a moisturizing or restructuring treatment? If you unknowingly used a product with silicones and are trying to apply other treatments after the fact, I'm sorry to say but your efforts are meaningless. Once the silicones adhere, nothing else can enter the hair shaft because the silicones block everything.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ That's why knowing the WHAT and the WHY directly affects the HOW, WHEN & WHERE. If you're a blonde going to the pool, it's probably a smart idea to use a silicone product in your hair before you touch the water. It will preserve your color and act as a buffer between your hair and chlorine. But if you're want to even out the porosity of the bleached hair at the bowl BEFORE toning, make sure to use the silicone-free stuff. Otherwise your color won't grab and you've just wasted your time and product. ⁣If you are a blonde in any shape or form (highlights, double process, balayage, etc), you’ve probably heard of purple shampoo for blonde hair. Purple shampoo distributes purple pigment to neutralize unwanted brassy, yellow tones in the hair.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Although sometimes purple shampoo doesn’t work as planned. Have you ever used purple shampoo and instead cancelling out those brassy tones, your hair became a reddish color? That’s because purple doesn’t neutralize orange tones.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Depending on how hair was lifted during a color service, hair can turn brassy in different ways. If it was lifted to a true yellow/pale yellow tone, then the purple pigment will work perfectly to cancel out the yellow. However☝🏻more often than not, hair is lifted to a yellow tone with remaining orange undertones, which can be mistaken for yellow to the untrained eye. So what happens when you combine orange with purple? Instead of neutralization, you get a reddish tone.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Let’s break it down with color theory. We know that complimentary colors, when combined, create a neutral color.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ❤+ 💚 = 🤎⠀ 💙+ 🧡 = 🤎⠀ 💛+ 💜 = 🤎⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ But if you combine analogous colors, you will get a stronger color. For instance, 💛+ ❤= 🧡. Now let’s take apart purple shampoo and brass. Purple Shampoo (❤+ 💙 pigments) + Brass (🧡 tones) = 🤎❤. The blue in the purple shampoo neutralizes the orange tones, but the red remains.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Therefore, make sure you understand your hair color before choosing a shampoo. Purple will work great for pure yellow; but if you have even a smidge of orange brass, go for the blue shampoo. These pigmented shampoos can be used no more than once a week and are only an addition to your regular hair care, not a replacement.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Have you tried using pigmented shampoo? There are so many hair smoothing treatments on the market nowadays - keratin, Botox, Brazilian, Japanese, lamination, etc - how do you know which one is good for you? When it comes to SAFE smoothing, I always recommend professional products formulated WITHOUT formaldehyde. Why? Because formaldehyde is a respiratory irritant, and inhaling it can cause risk of ALS and other serious health consequences such as cancer, asthma and allergies. However, not all smoothing treatments contain harmful ingredients. In fact, the “original” Hair Botox, is based on panthenol (provitamin B₅) or other lipidium ingredients that moisturize and/or strengthen the hair without harsh chemicals. The ingredients differ a bit between brands, so make sure to check with your beauty professional. This makes for safe hair smoothing treatments that treats and fills your hair’s cortex with much needed keratin and moisture which is lost during chemical processes such as hair coloring or bleaching. This treatment strengthens and restores hair elasticity, antioxidants repair damage caused by daily styling, and restores shine and eliminates frizz. But all good things don’t last forever. Since these treatments fill your hair strands only with good things and are very gentle, they must be repeated every so often (1-3 months) for maintenance. Remember: once hair is damaged chemically (color, lightening) or mechanically (thermal styling), the hair cannot be “restored” to its virgin state. But you can fix the damage temporarily by putting a “band aid” over it. And this band aid, given its temporary properties, needs to be reapplied every so often to feed your hair with structure and moisture (i.e. hair Botox). Using the appropriate sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner is a huge plus to prolong the effects of the treatment. Would you like to see more posts like this? 🌀Pintura Highlights: i.e. balayage for curly hair The difference between balayage in the “traditional” sense and pintura highlights is in the painting itself. Pintura is painting only select curls in which way they lay. Therefore. It is important that your client comes with styled hair that’s been worn for 2-3 days so that you as the colorist can see exactly how the curls lie and where you need to place the light. Given the nature of the hair texture, a little goes a long way when it comes to painting. I touched up the previous pintura, without touching the previously lightened ends. 🌀Effortless🌀 As it happened, my first two models of the year were curly gals. And I’m so happy! Because both had type 3 curls but wanted different results 👩🏻‍🎨 that’s why a consultation is so important ✔️ This lovely gal wanted to break up the darkness at the root, and make sure there won’t be a harsh line when her hair starts to grow out. Solution: I combined #handtouch highlights (backcombing) at the nape and parietal areas, with intermittent #AirTouch slices in the crown. Anddd I strategically placed a few lowlights to break up the brightness in the mid lengths to further give depth and soften the solid blond at the top. We toned into a nice golden color with a hint of blush. Unfortunately that hue wasn’t accurately captured due to the ring light... the lighting struggle is real! 🍂🍁Autumn Vibes🍁🍂 To achieve this beautiful result on my client Emily, I first cut her hair using a cutting technique I learned from @justbhair on the main stage at @premierephilly ✂️ This cutting technique allows to keep the curl length but tame the width at the bottom, allowing you to transform the shape from triangular to rounded. Then I proceeded to touch up her balayage🎨 focusing mainly to bring up the brightness to her root. Since she had a previous balayage, I added back dimension by painting in some lowlights. For the lowlights and final toning I used @redken #ShadesEQ to achieve this dimensional ginger result.
