A hundred years ago, the United States sent the armed forces to put down the resistance of coal miners demanding to be treated as humans. They put the might of the federal government behind commercial interests to the detriment of workers.

These were miners who had been shorted their fair wages by the coal companies. They were evicted from company housing during winter. They were starved, threatened, beaten. They watched their children die of pneumonia for the sake of industry profits. Their fight was just. Their country should have stood behind them.

Instead, their elected officials and public law enforcement fell into line with the companies, prosecuted the workers for treason, and the capitalists launched a massive propaganda campaign to paint the coal miners as redneck Bolshevik wannabes. Misguided lawless agitators.

Nothing has changed except that it’s Amazon workers instead of miners now.

On this day, 13 February 1913, 82-year-old Irish-born labour activist Mother Jones was arrested in West Virginia after martial law was declared to suppress a coal miners’ strike. She was charged with inciting a riot – reportedly for attempting to read the Declaration of Independence – and conspiracy to commit murder. Tried and convicted in a military court, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Jones declared “Whatever I have done in West Virginia… I have done it all over the United States. And when I get out, I will do it again.” She was released and pardoned after serving 85 days, although she did contract pneumonia in prison. Btw on top of thinking that people should read more nonfiction in general I also specifically think more of you should read history beyond what you learned in school because it will stop you from saying shit like "this is a unique time & nothing like [LATEST POLITICAL EVENT THAT ALSO HAPPENED ALMOST IDENTICALLY AT LEAST FIVE SEPARATE OTHER TIMES WITHIN THE PAST 600 YEARS] has EVER happened before in the history of humanity whatever will we do!!! what will happen!!!"

A lot is said about how Spirit Island's components reflect the setting, all the invader pieces being icky plastic and the friendly pieces being wooden. But like, if we're going all the way with that, the blight tokens should be wooden as well. The rulebook states that some amount of blight is natural, the starting board has some lands already blighted, blight is a lose condition but it's not artificial and intrusive in the way the invaders are. Like it's just the land's natural reaction to being ravaged and exploited, but it's also caused by like, natural disasters.

The wildfire spirit in the first promo pack causes blight but can also heal it, it's an ecologically realistic vision of wildfires in nature & it feels weird that the blight tokens have the same texture as the symbols of empire and commerce encroaching on the land.
