But anyways, I’m still here and alive! So, this is what I think the previous One For All users’ favorite EPIC: The Musical songs are:

Yoichi Shigaraki: It’s canon that Yoichi likes superhero comics (Captain Hero!!!), so Legendary definitely fits. However, I have this sneaking suspicion that he also likes Would You Fall in Love with Me Again…

Toshitsugu Kudo: His favorite changed from Survive to Just a Man. I say this because Kudo had something of a change in heart when he decided to reach his hand out to Yoichi. I also think he likes Survive (of course 🙂‍↕️), because the words, “600 lives at stake, it’s just one life to take!” resonate with him.

Bruce Lee (😭): Either loves or despises Luck Runs Out. I say he likes it because he named One For All sarcastically, and has/had a black and white view of the world. He’s not doubting Kudo or whoever his “Captain” is, he’s doubting himself. And just like his complex relationship with the One For All Quirk, he has a complex relationship with Luck Runs Out.

Hikage Shinomori: I KNOW his favorite is The Challenge. He probably relates to Penelope in some sort of way. Not in the sense of waiting for someone, but in the sense of her loneliness and the pressure surrounding her. But I also think his favorite Saga overall is the Underworld Saga.

Daigoro Banjo: IT’S GONNA BE DANGEROUS MY FRIEND! Oh he loves Hermes! You know my post about the One For All users dressing up for Halloween? I’m gonna add on to that: Daigoro would dress up as Hermes, but specifically EPIC Hermes or Hadestown Hermes. That said, Wouldn’t You Like definitely resonates.

En Tayutai: I see him as a Little Wolf enjoyer, but more of him in Telemachus’s shoes. I don’t know what else I could say, though his favorite character is definitely AEOLUS!

Nana Shimura: I think she has mixed feelings about Scylla, given the way Nana herself died. “Give up your honor and faith”… Anyways, she probably likes Athena’s verse in Little Wolf! Either related or is jealous of Odysseus because he could go back to his son, while she very reluctantly gave Kotaro up.

Toshinori Yagi: Already done!

Izuku Midoriya: I’m so tempted to say Legendary, because that’s the obvious answer! And within good reason it’s an obvious answer, especially with the lyric, “If I fight those monsters, is it you I’ll find?”. So I’d say that’s actually his second favorite. More into Deku’s character development, I’d say Open Arms because a big part of the story is reaching out giving help even when it’s not wanted.

I saw someone say a while ago that because of how Shinomori reacts to Banjo joke punching him, that implies that there's no difference between fighting punching and play punching for Banjo, but I have another theory.

What if Danger Sense only detects things the user thinks of as threats?

I mean, think about it: if Danger Sense went off as every threat, wouldn't it have gone off around Aoyama? But it didn't, because Izuku didn't think of Aoyama as a threat.

Shinomori was a hermit, and I'd be willing to bet he doesn't like social interaction. Maybe he specifically interprets it as a threat, and that's why Danger Sense went off with Banjo?

So while I was doing the mangacaps for @everytsukauchi I noticed something about Naomasa that like struck me. We know his sister's quirk and his ancestor's quirk, and its heavily implied he also has the same quirk. He's a human lie detector. When talking to Mr and Mrs Aoyama, he keeps a hand to his left ear.

my first thought was that "oh he has some sort of Bluetooth device" but another screenshot showed that no, his ear is clean

I have a sneaking suspicion he was using his quirk while talking to the Aoyama's and unlike his sister, he doesn't need physical contact. Probably him holding his hand to his ear like that is part of the quirk!

I cant emphasize enough, that he only does this when he was asking questions to them and he stopped when talking to the others

Other things I would like to address:

“It’s so that darker skinned Asians feel represented!”: How am I, a darker skinned Asian person, supposed to feel represented when the only thing I am receiving is a recolored version of a character who is originally NOT darker skinned? It honestly feels cheap.

"Anime characters don't even look Japanese!": Most of the time, this argument ignores the cultural and narrative elements that make a character AND STORY who/what they are. Just because an anime uses an art style with exaggerated features (or features that aren't possible in real life, such as natural pink/ hair or eyes) doesn’t mean a character isn’t meant to be Japanese. This is especially clear when the character has a Japanese name, follows Japanese traditions or folklore, and exists in a setting that is either Japan or heavily inspired by it.

Whitewashing has a long and harmful history, with characters of color being played by white actors. However, just because blackwashing doesn’t share the same history doesn’t mean it isn’t problematic in its own way. If the goal is better representation and inclusivity, the solution isn’t to alter existing characters, but to create new, well-written characters that authentically represent different racial backgrounds. In all it’s forms, race-bending ultimately takes away from a race.

More on #1, Asian people have a variety of skin tones, but changing a character’s skin tone to something else just to showcase diversity feels more like a superficial attempt at representation than a true, meaningful inclusion of darker-skinned Asians. Throughout my childhood of only having paler-skinned Asian stereotypes as representation, I've never thought, "Wow, I wish they were darker so I could relate to them more!"

Imagine having a character who is meant to represent a specific culture (a lot of Genshin Impact characters come to mind, personally), especially when that culture doesn't get much representation elsewhere. Then, that character's race gets changed to showcase a different culture.

“Representation” should not come at the cost of erasing the character’s actual ethnicity.

Respect for an author’s intended ethnic identity and skintone for the character should be prioritized over changes, especially if it’s for the sake of relatability or just because it “looks better.” It is so easy to just keep a character’s skintone and race as is.

An Asian’s views on blackwashing Asian characters:

I usually don’t speak about race-bending publicly, but after seeing other people talking about it on Tumblr and race-bending being a kinda big thing on Twitter, I’d like to make my own kind of essay about it. For now, I’ll just be talking about people race-bending my own race and that I’ll mostly be focusing on anime characters:

Not all anime characters have a specified race. When they do, they’re mostly Japanese (or at least Asian), as most anime takes place in Japan. Asians have a variety of skin tones, obviously.

I’m an Asian on the darker scale of skin tones, but Asians can have any skin tone. So, no, I am not a “white person speaking over Asians”.

Asia is not just East Asia, as Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western Asia are Asian too.

I have many problems with race-bending, especially when it involves Asian culture, which is my culture.

I’d like it if people reading this will fully read it and will understand where I’m coming from.

The character is not yours. You shouldn’t change the racial element of a character that isn’t yours.

It’s better to create your own character and have them be inspired by the character you want to race-bend.

Races are not interchangeable. Race-bending is a racist version of redesigning a character.

Artists can say “it’s just harmless fun” or “It’s not as bad as whitewashing”. Every race should have right representation. But that’s the thing. Changing a race of a character is not the right way. Race-bending any character can be very racist since it’s erasing the representation that race gets.

Whenever artists race-bend a canonically Asian character, I feel personally offended. I hate the mentality of changing a character’s race just so you can relate to them. You don’t have to change their race to relate to them. You can relate to them because of their personality, backstory, etc. You can like a character, even if they’re not the same race as you.

Black people may not be represented right (sometimes at all), but Asians (and just about every minority) also have the same problem. You can’t just “fix” a race’s problem by increasing problems for another race.

No one is Asian-washing black characters. Example, since this series has a lot of diversity: Josuke Higashikata from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable/Diamond is Not Crash. People draw Josuke, the half-Japanese and half-British character of Japanese nationality, black. You can literally look up “josuke black” and know what I’m talking about. Artists doing that are not just making Josuke’s skin color darker, they’re replacing his features with black people’s features. If an artist draws Muhammad Avdol from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, the black man of Egyptian nationality, Asian, they definitely would be called racist. But when an artist turns an Asian character black, it’s okay? No, both are racist.

The “Blasians exist” excuse: If you redesign a character to be mixed, their features should be mixed. If you erase the defining racial features of an Asian and replace them with black features, you are not drawing a Blasian, you are drawing a Black person. I really hate it when artists redraw a character as black and say they’re mixed race when they erase literally every racial feature to put in another.

Why can’t people just draw their own black character?

Why not make an OC if you want black representation?

It’s much better than altering a canon character since it doesn’t have racist elements in it.

The reason I’m writing about blackwashing and not whitewashing is because everyone seems to agree that whitewashing is bad.

Imagine taking an Asian character and making them black. Sounds racist to me.

But all race-bending is bad.

Even my mixed African-Asian friend (who actually comes from Africa) doesn’t like it when people draw Asian characters black.

As an Asian, I would much rather want to see someone having a black OC than someone redrawing characters of my own race to fit the features of black people.

As an Asian, I would much rather want to see someone having an Asian OC than someone redrawing black characters (or characters of any other race). (Then again, people aren’t drawing non-Asians Asian)

All Might: I can see him liking Just a Man (it's a classic) or Remember Them, but I'd also see him preferring the calmer/less action-based songs like Open Arms, We'll Be Fine, or I Can't Help But Wonder.

Gang Orca: Likes the whole Ocean Saga and pretends to be Poseidon when singing Ruthlessness

Sir Nighteye: Listen. With this man, it's either Open Arms or No Longer You. It just cannot be explained. On the flip side, I could see him sort of despising No Longer You just because of his own problems with his Quirk.

Aizawa: Sobs when he hears Legendary because it reminds him of Oboro

Present Mic: STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRMMMM

Ryukyu: Such a fan of We'll Be Fine (me too girl 😭 it's underrated), but is also a Keep Your Friends Close girlie (def not saying that cus i'm a KYFC girlie)

Endeavor: As much as I picture him singing Thunder Bringer, Athena's wording in Warrior of the Mind ("I see you changing from how I've designed you" and "Don't forget that you're a warrior of a very special kind") always made me think of him.

Midnight: The obvious answer is There are Other Ways, though I'd say Puppeteer could work as well!

Mirko: Likes Odysseus because who doesn't??? But is a sucker for Ares's part in God Games

Best Jeanist: Since his favorite animal is canonically wolves, I'm tempted to say Little Wolf. His favorite character is probably Athena... However, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM REPEATEDLY SINGING, "I would take the Suffering from you!"

hello ☺️! i was wondering if you'd done a summary or translation for pg. 162, the police section, of the ultra archive character guidebook? i've been trying to track down where the idea of tsukauchi (the older)'s quirk being lie detector came from (i.e. whether this is a purely fanon creation or mentioned once offhandedly somewhere) and some people have attributed it to the ultra archive book, but it doesn't seem to have an official translation unfortunately. would you be willing to take a look? have a great day either way!

His archive profile doesn't actually mention his quirk, just that he knows All Might's secret, is in charge of the LOV cases, wants to catch AFO, and has great analytical skills.

I thought his quirk was introduced pretty early on? It's been a while.

But if not, it was definitely in MHA: Vigilantes (or, in Japanese, BNHA: Illegals), because they introduced Naomasa's sister there, and I believe that his quirk was explained in relation to hers (ie, her quirk was different from his in this way). Again, been a while so I might be wrong about the exact wording/placing, but it's definitely not a fanon concept!
