Enjoy these great highlights of BJJ Black Belt and Coach Carlo Chan’s first match where he represented team Ronin Athletics at Grappler's Quest
Carlo Chan: Fighter Bio & Profile
Carlo Chan received his Black Belt from Professor Felipe Costa and has been training in Brazilian Jiu jitsu for over a decade. Before joining the team at Ronin Athletics and training with head instructor Christian Montes, Carlo gained martial arts experience in Kung Fu as well as competitive weight-lifting. He prides himself in his ability to break down different techniques and leveraging the skills he acquired from being a physical therapist to learn new skills and help make sure he improves with every session.
As a BJJ teacher Carlo instills in students the necessary fundamental basics they need while teaching them fun techniques they could use in competition. Because of his ability break down different moves and techniques for students Carlo excels at helping students identify what they may be doing wrong and then convey the proper way to execute it.

Life Hacks put together a list of top sports every guy should try before they die and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (with help from us here at Ronin Athletics) made it. It’s no surprise that it was because of the wide array of benefits both physically and psychologically that comes from a BJJ training and the techniques and moves that make the sport so accessible to athletes of all sizes (even smaller fighters could overcome larger opponents with the right training and coaching).
Some of the other sports that made the list aside from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu include:
Ultimate Frisbee
Wife Carrying
Bike Polo
Sepak Takraw
Chess Boxing
Quidditch

The Evolution of MMA & Our Training Philosophy
The origins of MMA can be traced all the way back to the times of Ancient Greece; where the sport was referred to as Pankration (or Greek for ‘All Powers’). Mixed Martial Arts was used as competitive events in Greek sports where Fighters utilized fundamental MMA techniques like Striking, Clinch and Grappling to defeat their opponents but was also used on the battle field. The conquests that took place throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe played an important part in cultivating a number of the strategies still used throughout MMA. As time passed the techniques they introduced were eventually adopted by other Martial Arts disciplines to evolve into the sport we all love today.
Just like Pankration in Ancient Greece the coaches at Ronin Athletics offer MMA classes incorporating ‘All Powers’ and multi-dimensional principles like; Striking and Footwork from Kickboxing, Ground fighting and Submissions from BJJ, Clinch Techniques from Muay Thai and more to create a complete form of fighting for our students.
Our student’s training revolves around 3 essential scenarios:
Stand-up – Incorporates stand-up striking skills to initiate an effective MMA strategy or counter an opponent’s strategy.
Clinch– Defend and apply MMA takedowns and strikes.
Ground– Grappling training with modified strategies that striking brings to the BJJ ground game.

Gi vs No-Gi BJJ: Is There a Difference?
While Gi and No-Gi BJJ are considered two sides of the same coin; both are actually two distinct sports with their own unique characteristics based on attire. No-Gi relies on athleticism while Gi is reliant more on the methodical approach and each is usually characterized by a different pace and unique arsenal .However both of these terms share a number of aspects for example; both originate from BJJ and Wrestling delivery system and they utilize the same positional strategies incorporating control and submissions.
At Ronin Athletics we like encourage our BJJ students to explore both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because mastering both types is the best way to gain an overall better appreciation of the art of BJJ and help you continue to develop as complete Mixed Martial Arts athlete.
