Hellenic polytheism - free (and reliable!) resources
The Homeric Hymns: http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomericHymns1.html
The premier translations by Apostolos N. Athanassakis are also available to read online for free:   https://archive.org/details/homerichymns00home and https://archive.org/details/homerichymns00atha
The Orphic Hymns: http://www.theoi.com/Text/OrphicHymns1.html
The Delphic Maxims: https://www.scribd.com/document/186693295/Delphic-Maxims
Many other primary sources from ancient Greece can be found in English translations at theoi.com, which is a fantastic resource for information about the Theoi.
Modern prayers to the Theoi:

Some of the best and most essential books to start with - and for continuous reference, in my opinion:
Handbook To Life In Ancient Greece by Lesley Adkins & Roy A. Adkins   https://archive.org/details/handbooktolifein00adki
Greek Religion by Walter Burkert   https://archive.org/details/greekreligionarchaicandclassical
The Ancient Mysteries: A Sourcebook: Sacred Texts of the Mystery Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean World by Mavin Meyer   https://archive.org/details/ancientmysteries0000unse_p7i2
The Homeric Gods by Walter Otto  https://archive.org/details/in.gov.ignca.4448/page/n5/mode/2up

Overheard at the oikos:
“It looks like Boeing is under investigation for broken pickle forks on the 737.”
“..........?”
“I think it’s part of the landing gear.”
(Later)
“People here think Canadian taxes ARE billions of dollars. Per person. They’re wrong, but they think that.” *sarcasm*
“Yeah, well, fuck them with a pickle fork.”
I love my oikos!

Oooh...! Now I need a Hephaestus spread!
Tumblr media
A Conversation with Aphrodite
A spread for devotees of Aphrodite (and all others who may find this useful) to aid in communication with their goddess.
This is my first spread, so I welcome any and all critique! If you use this spread, I’d also love to hear about your experience. Feel free to change it in any way- expand it, rearrange it, adapt it for another deity. Make it work for you, and let me know what you did differently!
1. What is Aphrodite’s role in my life right now?
Pretty self-explanatory. This card sets up the reading by defining how, exactly, She fits into your day-to-day life. It’s somewhat of a significator; this card may simply confirm (or clue you in on) which ‘side’ of Herself Aphrodite tends to show you.
2. What can I do for Her?
For me, this card is about learning to be a better devotee. It might be about big-picture spiritual growth, or it might just be about a candle Aphrodite really wants you to buy for Her.
3. What can She teach me right now?
Self-explanatory. What do you have to learn from Aphrodite?
4. What can I do to strengthen our relationship?
Alternatively, ‘What can I do to maintain our relationship?’
5. Short term advice
This is Aphrodite’s chance to give you a word or two of wisdom for the immediate future.
6. Long term advice
Same as card #5, but this advice is for the less-immediate future.

A Hymn to the Mistress of Love and Desire
Homeric Hymn 6, “To Aphrodite” (author and date unknown)
I shall sing of venerable Aphrodite, beautiful goddess with a golden crown,
To whom belong the battlements of all sea-girt Cyprus,
The place to which the moist force of the blowing Zephyr
Carried her through the waves of the loud-roaring sea
Amidst soft foam.  The Seasons with their golden headbands
Received her warmly and draped her in divine garments;
Upon her immortal head they placed a finely-wrought
Beautiful gold crown, and in her pierced earlobes
They placed flowers of orichalcum and valuable gold,
While around her delicate throat and white breast
They adorned her with gold necklaces, the sort that
The Seasons themselves wear whenever they set out
To the gods’ lovely dance and the home of their father.
Now when they had placed all the adornments around her body,
They led her to the immortal gods, who welcomed her
When they saw her and took her hand in greeting,
Each one praying that he would lead her to his house
As his wedded wife, as they admired the beauty
Of Kythereia who wears a crown of violets.
Hail, o quick-glancing, sweet and gentle lady; grant that I
May take the prize in this poetic contest,
And set my song in good order, I pray you.
But I shall remember both you and another song, too.

Not my pantheon but here, @mina-malice!
Hi sorry to bother you, but would you happen to know where I can find accurate information about Norse Mythology that is also not riddled with white supremacist coding? I’m looking for as much complete information that I can do I can understand the religion properly. Thank you!
No prob.  Well, there’s the Fjorn’s Hall podcast, which if you’re into podcasts is *chef’s kiss* excellent, and you can go follow @fjorn-the-skald and @fjorn-wanders right here on tungler
Also the Saga Thing podcast, which is also amazing
And not to toot my own horn but I also have a podcast that deals with Heathen-related stuff.  Right now there is one entire episode!
There’s Dr. Jackson Crawford’s youtube channel
The Exploring Series on youtube
And there’s Sacred-Texts.com, the best website on the whole entire Internet, a sprawling archive of historical and religious texts.  Here’s the Celtic index, the English index (this is also where they keep the fairy lore), the Icelandic index, the “Legends And Sagas” index, and the Tolkien index (includes a lot of historical material that’s had a big influence on modern fantasy, like the Mabinogion and the Kalevala)

Respect is love.
Anyway, daily reminder from a culturally isolated Romani person.
Gypsy does not mean wanderer.
It literally means ‘people from egypt’ or similar, as europeans believed Romani people were from Egypt. It has become known similar to nomad due to how our ancestors have been forced to be nomadic due to racism and ostracization, but it is a SLUR.
Romani people are STILL being forcibly sterilized.
Romani people are STILL being forced into ghettos.
Romani people are still facing violence and danger in countless European countries- and recently, I’ve seen the beginnings of the extremes in the United States.
Have a little fucking respect and DON’T USE A SLUR THAT’S BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES AGAINST US.
And for the love of whatever’s up there, ESPECIALLY do not use it to describe your witchcraft. It is playing on the ‘magic gypsy’ trope, and is EXTREMELY insulting.
non romani people, please reblog this.

today in “things i’m disproportionately emotional about”:
it’s facial reconstructions of prehistoric humans!!
like, look at this part-homo sapiens, part-neandertal man from well over 30,000 years ago:
Tumblr media
doesn’t he just look like a dude you’d wanna hang out with? like he probably washes dishes in the kitchen with you, and has excellent weed
Tumblr media
what a charming fellow. what stories he probably has to tell. i’d definitely go shoot the shit with him on Contemplation Rock after i’d finished my day’s work carving a bone flute for the autumn hunting ceremony, or whatever
people have been people ever since people first became people, i tell you what
they all had lives and histories and families and friends and dumb gossip and games they played and total bullshit in which they believed wholeheartedly
they all argued about the nature of the world, and of themselves
they all sang songs
they all drew pictures
they all buried their dead in graves, and they buried their dead in graves well before they did a lot of that other stuff. they buried their dead with flowers, with panther claws, with the bones of animals they’d killed, with the bones of family members who had died at the same time or earlier. they buried their dead with their arms folded across their chests
they fell in love
they took care of their old and their sick and their disabled, even when it cost them
they made new things, and worried about what the new things meant for people everywhere, as a whole

image description under the cut because this is a whole-ass 5 page comic. (sorry!)
happy pride. i drew this instead of things i should be doing. it was a good excuse to draw a lot of beautiful girls using references (found under the cut). it’s messy and bad, but i think the message gets across. i love being a lesbian because it helped me love myself more.
