where do you draw your inspiration for the plot?
A lot of sources. For example sinners birth reapers is a mix of k-drama and the DnD character I created within a world my friend and I made up. For other stories such as Saudade or Maybe, Probably I get inspired by stories people tell me. Also some characters share personality traits with my friends etc.

HOW ARE YOU ELLA?? are you finished with work?
Tumblr media
I AM DONE WITH MY THESIS 😖 and hopefully soon to be done with the three books I was supposed to design.
I submitted my thesis on the 15th of July now I am waiting for a feedback from the committee. Once I get that and correct the thesis following their comments and guidelines all that's left is the defence. That will be in late September. So now I have August free to continue writing ^^

I tried sticking to a schedule but turns out I suck at it. Deadlines are my worst fear so I decided to not include that.

when will you post maybe, probably?
To be honest the date keeps changing because I think I am cursed when it comes to writing and posting my work. I have too many things which affect my mental health currently and I am doing my best to cope with it. There are days when I am really inspired and there are days when I can't get out of bed.
So to answer your question it's gonna be posted when I finish. When is that? It can be in two days or two months.

Your nails click against the wine glass before the rim touches your red lips. A frown appears on your face when the bitter taste drips down your throat. With your free hand, you trace the photo delivered by a lost soul for you to find on your porch this morning.
Park Jimin.
Just like the wine, the name itself leaves a bitter taste in your mouth even more so after his whole charade. You twirl the photo in the air, biting your lip. Weeks passed since your last encounter. You visited the hospital under the false pretence to be sick, but it was of no avail. Jimin took a leave and hasn’t come back or at least that’s what the nurse kept telling you whenever you called.
Jungkook huffs as he drops the heavy box containing the last of his belongings. “So, when is the truck coming tomorrow to move our belongings?”
You snort, rolling your eyes. “It’s not coming.”
With a snap of your fingers, the picture burns and the ashes fall onto the ground. Jungkook scratches the back of his head. “Are we even moving tomorrow? Did you have a change of heart?”
“Of course not, we are moving tomorrow. There is only much you can stay before people start to notice you haven’t aged,” you drink the last bits of wine and put the glass on the table before jumping off the sofa, “but I am not paying one million won for something I can do with just a wave of my finger.”
“I guess that makes sense. Just this morning Mrs Choi asked me for the special formula we use to keep our flowers alive.” Jungkook laughs while you roll your eyes.
Mrs Choi was one of the nosiest neighbours who at first was bothersome but later posed to be somewhat of a threat because of her constant snooping around. It only amplified when Jungkook moved. It took a month for her to drop the subject of Jungkook’s relation to you.
“Should’ve told her it’s magic,” You pretend to throw confetti at Jungkook who snorts, “She already thinks we are part of some cult after having a conversation with Yoongi.”
“She and Yoongi spoke?” Jungkook grins leaning against the door frame.
You chuckle remembering the encounter. “More like she tried to talk with Yoongi who insulted her by calling her a mundane pest.”
“Sounds like something Yoongi would say. By the way, I know you can use your abilities to spare us the extra work, but people will find it suspicious if the moving truck never comes. They’ll know something is up.” You raise your brow at Jungkook who gives you a questioning look before you grab the glass and turn around heading to the kitchen.
“How will they know?” You set the glass into the sink reaching for the cardboard box nested underneath it.
“They will know, plus Yugyeom told me people nowadays are more obsessed with mystery and reapers than they were before. Jaehyun also confirmed this after he saw a TikTok video.” Jungkook fires back as you enter the room putting all the papers from the table into the small box.
“Yugyeom? Jaehyun? TikTok?” You wrinkle your nose in confusion.
“Reapers I met during orientation day. Jaehyun is under Hoseok’s mentorship,” you halt for a second finding it odd that Hoseok had young apprentices let alone that they engage into conversation with other reapers, “and Yugyeom works for Namjoon. TikTok is a social media all the young people use.”
“Orientation day? And did you just call me old?” You couldn’t help but feel flabbergasted at the information Jungkook was throwing.
He puffs a strand of hair that escaped from his perfectly slid back hair. “I mean after the ceremony and everything you have an orientation day where they tell you in detail what your duty will be and so on. Didn’t you have one? And yes, you are one thousand years old sorry to break to you.”
You scoff biting your tongue to prevent yourself from spitting some rude words. “I assume this was Namjoon’s doing. No, I was given an assignment and expected to have it done. And we died at the same age idiot, I just happened to be born in a different era.”
Sensing the tensed atmosphere, he quickly changes the subject by nodding his head in the direction of the box you just closed shut. “I thought you gave the case a rest as Seokjin instructed you.
You glance at it and remember its content; Jimin’s schedule printed on a big sheet of paper next to a map of Seoul covered in red dots, his latest locations according to the lost souls. Seokjin suggested you give it a rest until they find a better solution Yoongi however, asked for you to try to find the reasoning behind Jimin’s involvement because for a goblin to take interest in a human is rare.
“Honestly, I am trying to make peace with the idea of having to wait for another sixty to seventy years before leaving.” You sit on the floor next to the box as Jungkook observes you closely.
“Surely you won’t have to wait for him to die of old age. Life expectancy has dropped drastically, people hardly make it to the age of sixty now.” He tries to lighten up the mood with a chuckle.
“Did Jaehyung or Yugyeom tell you that? Or perhaps Tok or whatever you just mentioned.” He rolls his eyes but smiles,” When a goblin revives someone, they give a piece of their soul hence why Taehyung is under Jimin’s protection. Having a goblin’s protection means that the soul will be protected until it dies of old age or the Goblin’s bride appears.”
Jungkook’s eyes widen slightly at the mention of the Goblin bride not knowing that the legend was true.
“Some reapers mentioned it not long ago after the incident with Taehyung happened. You know word travels fast,” his cheeks take on a shade of red as the embarrassment was evident when he continues, “However, they brushed it off as a myth because not much is known about her. How do we find the bride?”
“It’s more complicated than that.”
Jungkook furrows his brows. “If we find the bride and he marries her that’s it? He’s free and you can take Taehyung’s soul?”
You shake your head laughing as you remember what Yoongi and Namjoon told after one urgent meeting. “I mean she is a bride in theory, in practice it’s different. Also, I am not a soul stealer but a reaper we do have laws. I can’t just kill him off and be done with it.”
“You know what I mean. But what’s the bride’s purpose?” his gaze feels somewhat interrogating and a part of you wants to keep the information to yourself as per Yoongi suggestion but another one does see Jungkook as your partner no matter how opposed you felt at first.
“Goblins serve a sentence of their own you know that. A bride is needed to set them free of the immortal life and essentially the sins. To set Jimin free the bride needs to pull the sword out of his chest. Such bride appears every thousand years.” You exhale at the last sentence.
Jungkook seems conflicted at the revelation. “Which means you have to wait for Taehyung to die of old age if the bride doesn’t appear?”
You nod and he closes his eyes mumbling some words before he taps your shoulder awkwardly albeit lovingly.
“How will we know if she appeared?”
“Usually the lost souls feel her presence but so far they haven't heard anything. They are as clueless as I am.” You whisper trying to gather your thoughts when Jungkook claps startling you.
“On a lighter note, what is the location of the new house we are moving into?” Jungkook nestles himself on the sofa in front of you tugging a pillow underneath his head for support.
You pull your phone from the pocket of your jeans scrolling through the conversations you had with the landlord. You chose Byun Baekhyunat at the suggestion of Hoseok who deemed him as trustworthy for he doesn’t ask much nor requires a lot of paperwork like other landlords. Ever since meeting him, you came to two realizations, he was a high-profile person, two he was a walking scandal gracing the headlines of many gossip magazines.
"It is on the upper side of the town among the luxurious neighbourhoods. Yoongi thought it would decrease the chances of stumbling upon one of our previous neighbours.” You swipe through the conversation, looking for the time Baekhyun suggested you come.
“What’s the cover-up this time?”
You look at him, half-asleep snuggled against the pillow. “I went for the brother and sister one.”
He hums as his fingers trace the pattern of the sofa. “If the souls are correct, Jimin seems to spend an awful lot of time in the upper part. Is that perhaps your reason for the choice of the location?”
Your eyes follow the movement of his fingers. “Surprisingly, I’ve never given much thought about it. It would make sense if he lived there after all Taehyung surely owns an apartment there and Jimin has lived long enough to be able to afford one too.”
Just as Jungkook was about to respond the screen of your phone lit up, a text message showing up in your notification centre.
Oh Sehun Just to confirm that you are coming tomorrow at 12 pm.
“We needed to be there at noon. Try to ease it with the games tonight.” You lightly tap his head with your phone and leave the room and head towards your bedroom.
Before you close the door, you hear some commotion and a sigh followed by loud footsteps. Jungkook drags his body across the hallway into his room, closing the door lightly.
                                          ____
“I am not paying one million won for something I can do with just a wave of my finger, and then proceeds to use public transport to go to the house,” Jungkook whines loudly ignoring the stares of people around you.
The train stops abruptly, and a man pushes his way through the mass, stomps on Jungkook’s shoes and in the process causes Jungkook to lose footing and fall directly into an old woman’s lap. He apologizes cowering behind you immediately, in a desperate attempt to avoid the glare of the woman.
“I wanted you to experience some human things.” Your grip on the pole tightens as the train goes off.
He sulks leaning his forehead against your shoulder. “Are we going to address the elephant in the room? I am positive Jimin has a car that he uses for transport, not the underground.”
You scoff jerking your shoulder away so he would remove his head. “You think my world revolves around Park Jimin.”
“Yes. At least now it does since he’s connected to Taehyung.” You lightly punch his shoulder as he gasps grabbing the attention of onlookers.
“Stop abusing me for stating the truth.”
“Stop sputtering nonsense and I won’t.”
“You were the one who started with the nonsense, teaching me mundane things as if we are normal people who live normal lives.”
“Shut up.”
“Make me.”
You turn to him hoping that the stare would give him the hint to drop it before you would literarily zip his mouth.
“You know this is the part where you kiss the main protagonist according to the movies Yugyeom and I watched.” He cheekily whispers.
“Do you want me to ask for a transfer? I can give the papers to Seokjin to assign you to Yugyeom.” You reply with a small smile which Jungkook deems as creepy before he shakes his head sending you his signature grin.
The train stops at your station, and you exhale as you make your way out to the platform with Jungkook’s hand gripping your blazer so he wouldn’t get lost in the mass. This part of Seoul was vastly unfamiliar to you although you’ve spent a good amount of fifteen years living in this city. In the distance, a red sports car captures your attention. Baekhyun is leaning against it typing away on his phone with an occasional giggle escaping his lips. In any other situation you would’ve declined the free ride he offered but the strict policy of the neighbourhood prevented you from entering the estate without the owner of the house accompanying you for the first time, some sort of assurance of your identity.
Baekhyun notices, waving enthusiastically. “Hi, it’s nice to see you again. You must be the brother. I am Byun Baekhyun.”
Jungkook catching a liking to Baekhyun who emitted the same vibe as him shakes his hand flashing him a smile. “Jungkook, nice to meet you too.”
“Shall we get going?” he motions to the car, Jungkook already hoping in the front seat grinning like a child.
Taking a seat back you look through the window as you pass the expensive houses. It wasn’t like you couldn’t afford all the luxurious things life had to offer, working as a reaper for thousand years earned you enough money to buy all these houses but the life you led prevented you from pampering yourself. Yoongi was someone who worked from the shadows and as such lived a life full of modesty, unlike Hoseok who basked in designer clothing. Some of your mentor’s attitude rubbed off on you and living an average life provided comfort and ensured safety from being discovered. People loved to gossip and dig information and if you stay low and out of their sight guaranteed a peaceful life.
Baekhyun stops in front of a white house far larger than the one you and Jungkook previously lived at. He exits the car leading you into a huge garden decorated with flowers and bushes high enough to prevent curious gazes. Entering the foyer, you are greeted with a modern minimalistic design that fits well with the exterior of the house. For a split second, you understood Hoseok’s thirst for posh things.
“Take a look around the house. Make yourself at home while I fetch us some refreshing tea.” He pats Jungkook on the back before disappearing.
Jungkook grabs your forearm shaking you slightly. “I don’t know where you found this guy, but I am already in love with this house.”
“Hoseok suggested him, “you shake off his hand and walk around the living room feeling so foreign and small and in such a large space.
Jungkook shoots you a puzzled look before his attention drifts to the huge pool visible from the floor-to-ceiling windows. “I can almost kiss you how happy I am.”
“I’m good thanks.” You mumble when you hear footsteps coming from the lobby.
Your head snaps towards the sound as a figure enters the room. Park Jimin strolls inside the house not paying close attention to the guests having a tour through his house. Not that he expected any guests to be frank. However, when he does notice you standing in the middle of the room with a very surprised Jungkook behind, he wished he prolongued his walk. Perhaps that would’ve saved him the unpleasant encounter.
He stops in his tracks, a part of him ready to fight. “What are you doing in my house?”
You raise a brow unable to withhold the surprise. “You live here?”
Before Jimin can answer Baekhyun’s voice cut through the room. “You will love the garden, especially the po-“
The sight of Jimin Baekhyun’s voice flattens, the charming salesman's personality slowly diminishing. “When did you come back, uncle Jimin?”
“Uncle?” you splutter.
Jimin ignores your question as he reaches for the cup of tea on the tray Baekhyun was holding. “Explain.”
“The house was supposed to be vacant for twenty years and you know how much money we could get by charging monthly rent.” His voice grows quiet as Jimin throws him a stare.
“Do you even know who that is?” Jimin angrily points towards you and for a second you feel offended that he excluded Jungkook,” that thing over there.”
“Don’t talk to our tenant like that. She owns a tea house.” Baekyhun whispers pulling Jimin by the sleeve of his jumper hoping the latter would behave more mannerly.
Jimin scoffs at the mention of the tea house as Baekyhun turns towards you.” Uncle tends to be a little reserved towards newcomers.”
Your lack of expression stirs a new wave of nervousness in Baekyhun before he leans into Jimin, whispering: “She didn’t pay yet.”
Jimin already fed up with the behaviour of the guy moves away gesturing to the front doors. “I suppose the sports car magically fell from the sky?”
“The rent is already paid in full amount.” You say to which Jimin reacts by shooing Baekhyun away making the latter bows rather awkwardly and run away from his piercing gaze.
“You don’t want to mess with a goblin,” Jimin warns his eyes holding unfounded hatred.
You pull out the contract pushing it to his face. “It’s already signed.”
With the tip of his fingers, the paper in your hands begins to burn, ashes crumbling to the floor. Rolling your eyes at the goblin’s dramatic antics you cross your arms having enough of the attitude. “This was a copy. The real estate agent has the original.”
“I’ve given you more than enough of my time. Leave now.” He takes a step closer, the move although intimidating in his mind only draws a laugh from you.
“You know what signing a contract with a reaper means, right? How about I take him instead of the house?” your reply makes Jimin stumble back as Jungkook gawks at you.
He stands there observing as you don’t’ deter even the slightest bit under his threatening gaze. The silence is defying making the tension high enough it could be cut with a knife. After a minute Jimin exhales in defeat running a hand through his hair, the frustration clear on his face.
“Take whichever room you want but if you think you can come in and kick me out you have another thing coming.” He says as he walks past you and upstairs.
You take a moment to compose yourself never being in a situation where you blackmailed a person with someone’s life. Jungkook however does a little victory dance around you.
He leans down to your level both hands holding on each of your shoulders holding you captive. “Y/N did we just win the lottery?”
“Can you stop with the touchy-feely moments? It’s making me uncomfortable” This seems to fly over his head as he lets go of you and runs upstairs ready to claim one of the vacant rooms.
You decided to head to the kitchen to ironically brew some tea, mentally cursing Hoseok for creating this unintentional mess of a situation. You open the cupboard and reach for whatever bag of tea there was. Seeing a familiar metallic round box, you push aside the rest and slowly begin to prepare the water. Opening it you take a few spoons of the matcha powder and spill it into the small teacup whisking the content until it took a smooth green texture.
As you take a sip Jimin enters the room, the atmosphere immediately dropping not that you were emitting happy energy after everything that happened but having him around dampened your mood. You ignore the obvious daggers he was throwing your way as he reaches around you to grab a bottle of juice. For a second you question your decision to stay but your pride was at stake and so was your hard-earned money. The silence occupys the kitchen as each one of you did their thing.
Placing the cup into the sink you think of a way to approach him and ask for simple matters such as billing and groceries but before you can even ask the goblin disappears without a trace.
“And they say reapers are dramatic.”
                                                          _____
Park Jimin questioned the day he brought Taehyung back to life. Ever since the young man realised he could summon the goblin by blowing out a candle he’s been abusing it. Jimin couldn’t even count how many times he was called for stupid things such as a spider is on my wall, does my outfit look good or is it too much, I am lonely let’s go watch the sunset.
The list was never-ending and quite honestly Jimin was debating about giving him up to the reaper.
“I swear if you summoned me to assist you with another wardrobe malfunction, I will burn all of your last year’s Gucci blazer collection,” Jimin yells as he strides through Taehyung’s flat.
“That was one time and it was an important occasion, stop crying about it.” Taehyung walks out of the bathroom dressed in sweatpants and a hoodie, drying his damp hair with a pink towel.
He gives Jimin one of his signature boxy smiles and the older man scoffs crossing his arms. “I won’t watch the Notebook again. Call your girlfriend for that one, I’m leaving.”
Taehyung leaps forward slithering his arm around Jimin’s elbow as he leads him to the living room. “As tempting as that is I didn’t call you for that. I have a proposal for you.”
“That doesn’t sound good.” Taehyung looks offended for a second before he shrugs it off with a smile.
Once they enter the spacious living room, he unhooks his arms from underneath Jimin’s and heads towards the cabin supplied with various costly alcohol drinks. “I’ve been thinking-“
“That doesn’t sound good”
Taehyung turns suddenly shooting a mischievous glare. “You know how lonely I am-“
“Very much so.” Jimin takes a seat on the cosy sofa, the only thing he grew to like in this apartment.
“Ya would you let me finish,” Taehyung protests and Jimin disregards his annoyance with a wave of his hand, a sign for him to resume,” An idea came to my mind. We work so well as a team. You and I, so what do you think about us being roommates?”
Jimin does a double-take just to be sure he heard him right. “Excuse me?”
He hopes Taehyung burst laughing calling it a park and a funny jab at his stony personality, but he never expects his smile to flatten. Suddenly he took a better look at him and noticed the small fragments which showed cracks in Taehyung happy go lucky façade. The bags under his eyes were more pronounced as he put the glass of whiskey in front of Jimin before he took the seat on the opposite side.
Taehyung plays with his drink for a second and then swallows it in one go. “I understand I might’ve been clingy but gosh. I see them everywhere Jimin. I know we agreed to ignore them and you’ve helped me so much but I just can’t shake them off.”
Jimin tilts forward comprehending quite well how he felt. Taehyung glances up at the ceiling exhaling loudly as he tries to lighten the mood with a chuckle.
“Mina asked for a break,” Jimin’s stare moves from the drink towards Taehyung, “she said I changed a lot after the accident. She keeps pushing me to visit a doctor thinking my fear of leaving the house is connected to my accident. Little does she know I see all the ghosts flying around us when we try to go on a date. She doesn’t see them reaching out and whispering in my ear.”
“Taehyung-“
He instantly brushes off the pity Jimin’s voice carried. “I am not sorrowful about the break; it was long overdue if I am being honest. I am angrier at myself for being a coward.”
As Jimin listens to him, he begins to understand why Taehyung summoned him so often. Jimin has lived this life so long that he overlooks how traumatising it must’ve been for Taehyung who never even knew supernatural beings such as goblins and reapers existed.
“I can’t believe I am saying this,” he chuckles and Taehyung joins,” but I would gladly offer you that if it were achievable.”
“If money is an issue, I am more than keen to pay for the rent.” Hearing Jimin consider his idea makes Taehyung jump from his seat and land next to him.
“It’s not the money,” Jimin shakes his head the image of Y/N standing in his living room plays in his mind, “Baekhyun decided to rent the house without consulting me beforehand.”
Taehyung stares at him as if what he told was a minor inconvenience. “So? We’ll find another one.”
“It’s complicated.”
Taehyung throws his hands in the air frustrated with Jimin. “It’s more like you are making it complicated.”
“He rented it to the reaper and her companion.” This shuts up Taehyung promptly.
There is a small silence as Taehyung takes in his words. He was told by Jimin how the reapers function and what would be of him now that he was under Jimin’s care so the fear of seeing Y/N again wasn’t as big as before. Taehyung thoughts raced in different directions as he calculated the pros and cons of his new idea.
“I’ll move in.” He breaks the silence and for the first time, Jimin thinks Taehyung has lost it.
“Are you insane?” Jimin counters taking a good look at him.
Taehyung claps his hands as the idea becomes more apparent in his mind. “This is the only way to get over my fear, isn’t it? I face the one thing that frightens me the most.”
“Having one near-death experience wasn’t enough for you.”
“Let me do this.” Taehyung reasons as Jimin stands up prepared to leave this nonsense of a discussion. There was no way he was about to throw him into a lion’s den just for the sake of getting over his fear.
“No is my final answer. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have things to do.”
“You selfish prick,” Taehyung yells out of the top of his lungs, “you bring me back to life knowing fully well the consequences of your action. Knowing I’ll never be able to live a normal life and never be able to confide in anyone except you. And now you are robbing me of the only chance to overcome my fear and have a shot at living my life as normal as I can.”
Jimin flounces to Taehyung fuming at his behaviour. “You want to go and live with a person who can kill you with a snap of her fingers? Are you dense?”
“Perhaps I am.” Taehyung shouts as Jimin runs a hand over his face pinching his lower lip with his thumb and index finger.
“This isn’t a game. There is no redo if you lose.” He whispers when he sees the desperation in Taehyung’s eyes.
“I am begging you.”
“I can’t guarantee your safety.”
“I am okay with that.”
Going against his better judgment Jimin crumbles under the pressure of Taehyung’s plead.
Taehyung’s vision becomes blurry, but he pushes the tip of his tongue against the palate to prevent tears from spilling. “I’ll come tonight.”
Jimin nods before leaving.
                                                      ____
You don’t foresee Jimin coming back tonight which is why you are startled when he reappears in the middle of the dining room. The knife falls out of your hold clacking against the marble floor, the sound deafening. Jungkook unaffected by all of it continues to munch on his food.
“You know how to make a grand entrance.” You put the fork down reaching for the knife and setting it to the side.
“Well, you can’t blame me, until a few hours ago I lived alone,” Jimin remarks seeing an additional dish set on the table.
Jungkook gives him a sheepish smile. “I’ve made some extra food so I supposed you might want to try it.”
Jimin reluctantly takes a seat at the table jabbing the fork into the steak Jungkook made. You were still doubtful about the Goblin and unsure about the whole situation wanting to put some space between him and you whereas Jungkook saw this as an opportunity to expand his social circle. You shift awkwardly in the seat not used to the suffocating silence.
“So how was everyone’s day?” Jungkook speaks up causing both you and Jimin to look at him weirdly.
Again, Jungkook is oblivious to the tension determining to continue the conversation on his own. “I had a blast swimming in the pool.”
You hit him under the table wanting to eat in peace without awkwardness polluting the air. Jungkook hisses in pain shooting you a glare as you pretend not to notice.
“I was out for a stroll,” Jimin answers curtly to which Jungkook bobs his head with a smile.
“For 10 hours?” you couldn’t help but throw the comment Jimin whoever deliberately ignores it.
“How’s the food? Steak is my special dish; I call it the Reaper’s wish.” at this point you were contemplating smacking Jungkook at the back of his head.
Jimin hums his fork mid-air when the atmosphere around you began to shift. You couldn’t pinpoint what was different, but the air felt threatening and Jimin took notice of that when he looked at you. Jungkook also became silent. The tingles coursing through you were indicating incoming trouble but what made things unsettling was that neither you nor Jimin seemed to know in which form the trouble will occur. In a matter of seconds, grey smoke arose engulfing all three of you and transporting you to a dark road encircled by nothing but trees.
You stood in the middle of the lane, a car driving towards you at full speed. Jimin reacts first breaking all the streetlights and lastly, the car’s too putting it at a disadvantage. It slows down and as your eyes get accustomed to the sudden darkness you see four figures in it among them was Taehyung.
You and Jungkook follow Jimin as a blue light conjuring a large sword in his hand. Running straight towards the car he slashes it in half. Jungkook springs to the side in which Taehyung was using his power to stop it from falling. The man originally sitting in the front seat wiggles out of the wreckage trying his best to flee but with one wave of your finger, a force drops him to the ground clasping him tightly.
Jimin circles the wreckage and opens the door untangling Taehyung out of the ropes. The latter holds Jimin for dear life breathing heavily.
“Are you hurt?” Jimin asks as Taehyung gasps for air.
It takes a moment for Taehyung to regain the ability to speak before he strikes Jimin’s shoulder. “Am I hurt? Are you for real? Asking me that after cutting the damn car in half. For fuck’s sake couldn’t you just stop it like a normal human being?”
“I mean he is right.” You lean your head looking at the wreck Jimin caused.
Once Taehyung moves further away from the car Jungkook lets go of it, the wreckage falling with a loud boom. You move from the scene and go to the other two men Jungkook gathered. Squatting down careful enough not to get dirt on your jeans you lean in looking them straight in the eye.
“You will go to the police and surrender yourself, admitting the abduction and other crimes you’ve committed.”
Turning around you join Jimin, Jungkook and Taehyung ignoring the persistent tug you felt ever since laying your eyes on Taehyung. Noticing your presence, he looks at you still shivering from the events.
“Nice to see you again Mrs Y/N.”

Note
when will you update sinners birth reapers?
Soon I promise. Expect new things in the next two weeks.
February has been a roller coaster for me, especially with what's happening in the world. I needed time to process it and try to function properly because my country is close to Ukraine and fear of possible war is higher than ever so many people are stocking up supplies and taking their savings from banks. It's just surreal for me since I never fully recover from covid and this is by far worse.
Despite things happening, I will continue writing and updating to keep my mind sane and to ease my anxiety which has never been this bad. I planned on adding a few more groups to the masterlist in April but that has been pushed to March so I'll be introducing a new one shot soon.
Please if you can go buy things from Etsy to support Ukraine. Do not buy phone cases or tote bags because the sellers can get in trouble if they do not ship the items although you asked them not to. Instead buy digital images. Go on Etsy and under art and collaborations pick drawing and illustrations. On the left side you will have All Filters and there choose location Ukraine. Please if you can donate. It will help greatly.

i LOVE Sinners birth reapers but i am still confused and what are the roles of the bois and Y/N in this fanfiction. could pls explain some more?
Yes of course 🥰
I did take inspiration from the Goblin k-drama and Hotel del Luna, however not all elements are taken from them. Some things are purely my imaginations and don't follow the k-drama.
Reapers: Y/N and Jungkook
One becomes a Reaper when they sin in their past life. Depending on the weight of their sin they get a mentor who guides them through their path of redemption. Possible mentors are Yoongi, Hoseok and Namjoon.
They bring the souls to the Realm and into the tea room where they are offered the warm beverage in exchange for their memories. If a soul refuses to drink the tea they are sent to Hoseok.
Deities: Seokjin, Yoongi, Hoseok and Namjoon
Seokjin: The oldest deity and the one in charge. He occasionally sets foot out of the Realm to pick up souls which have lived an honourable life.
Yoongi: Deity of vengeance, mentor of Reapers who committed great sins and their path to redemption is usually painted with heavy tasks, pain and regret. Most of his students are given 300 years or even more to redeem. Also, he chases after lost souls.
Hoseok: Deity of faith and destiny. Hoseok is the deity with the least number of students using any chance to transfer them to Namjoon. Although Seokjin is in charge of the Realm, Hoseok often than not takes over his duties making him second in charge. He guides the souls to their judgment trail and takes care of the ones who refuse to drink the tea.
Namjoon: Deity of fortune and peace. He mentors Reapers who have sinned but not that greatly. For example, Jungkook whose sin is almost insignificant given that he needs to serve for only 50 years. His students are called special snowflakes because they hardly ever get grotesque tasks like Yoongi's. They ordered to give a white flower to the deceased to ensure their safe passage to heaven or for a safer passage through the judgment trail.
Other supernatural beings:
Lost soul: Taehyung
Lost souls are essentially both ghosts and humans who escaped death by a supernatural force. Rarely do other being such as Goblin interfere with Reaper's business but if they manage to stop them from guiding the soul to the Realm by reviving them, a lost soul is born.
Goblin: Jimin
Humans can be resurrected into Goblins to serve a punishment of their own. It's not much known about what type of a sin they've committed to be cursed but just like Reapers, they serve their punishment. The Goblin usually has to wait centuries if not decades for a person to be born which will strip them off of the curse. That type of person is called Goblin bride.

Author’s note: I did proofreading but it’s not 100% so bear with me. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it

“Y/N” Jungkook’s soft voice reaches you in a form of a whisper. The envelope in your hand felt heavy evoking strong strings which further formed this indescribable hole in your chest. You finally gave a name to the soul that haunted you for thousand of years. You finally reached the end destination. The last puzzle to fit the frame and give you the answers to your pain.
Kim Taehyung. Born on 30th December 1995. Namsan Park.
The letters began to fade stirring a wave of panic inside of you. For years you wanted to know more about your past self and what kind of a person she was. Had her sins been so grotesque, a thousand-year punishment was required for you to redeem yourself. You couldn’t remember because you were robbed of off memories by the deities, but you could imagine. Imagining vivid stories, each one being about yourself and Taeyhung.
You never knew what bounded you together but for years you made up different scenarios, from your introduction to your doom and eventually his last reappearance as your last soul. The scenarios differed depending on your mood, but each time the ending was the same. Up until now. With every thump your heart made against the ribcage, the realization of the situation became clearer. You weren’t leaving the World.
Dusting yourself up, you breathe in and out to calm down finding solitude in the wind that blew biting your cheeks and painting them red. A burning sensation in your hands made you hiss out in pain as you instinctively drop the letter from your grasp. Piece by piece it dissolves into glowing circles that form into butterflies flying away from you.
“I think we need to go and report to Yoon-“
Your hands are buried in the pockets of the warm coat hugging your frame, a lame attempt to conceal the shaking. “The protocol says the deity whose domain Taehyung lies under will come to collect us.”
Jungkook albeit confused nods exhales tiredly before plumping himself next to you on the bench. “Who are you hoping for?
“One selfish part of me wishes for Jin because it means he lived a life free of sins. He won’t need to go through the judgment trail.”,” you hesitantly speak up a small smile on your lips, “but the rational part knows it will either be Yoongi or Namjoon.”
Jungkook’s eyes widen at the mention of Seokjin’s name as he leans forward and scrunches his nose in bewilderment trying to process the information you gave him. “I thought he was just the God of the Realm. Giving instructions in that awful pink chair while sipping wine.”
“Sure, that’s one part of his job but he has so many obligations we don’t know of. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him collecting the last soul of one of my previous partners. She went straight to heaven from what I heard.”
“Do you think Taehyung will go to heaven?”
“I-“ you stutter when the air around you suddenly begin to take on the form of a fog which twisted itself into a mini-tornado your attention.
Namjoon’s frame covered in white steps out of it and you feel conflicted. His appearance means that Taehyung lived his life free of any major sin which meant he still needed to undergo the trial. Moreover, delivering the blow to Namjoon meant further straining your already tarnished image in his eyes. It was a no-win situation for you. Battling with your inner thoughts you miss the first few words Namjoon says.
“He didn’t die.” You hear Jungkook say, his gaze shifting between you and Namjoon.
Perplexed Namjoon blinks a couple of times. “What you mean he didn’t die?”
“He was revived.” You answer.
Jungkook fiddles with his fingers, grabbing the hem of his shirt to steady his hands as Namjoon gestures for both of you to explain. Jungkook informs him of the situation and bit by bit you see Namjoon’s face slowly losing colour in the end. He begins walking up and down in a stressed manner, mumbling incoherent words to himself.
“This is impossible,” he says, “he’s supposed to be dead. Y/N you got the envelope, Jin personality sent one to both you and me.”
When your eyes met you half expect him to bear an expression of absolute anger at your incompetence that he advocated every time you had monthly reports.
“I did receive; however, he isn’t dead. Could this be a mistake?” A mistake on deities’ part never happened but judging by today’s incidence the seed of doubt was planted in your brain.
“Y/N, be careful.” Namjoon’s low voice and glare gave away the slight threat behind his words.
“Then how do you explain this?” Frustration seeps from each corner of you as you stand up.
“I can’t. We must assemble an emergency meeting with all the Gods of the Realm. I shall go and fetch the others while you go to the main room.” With a snap of his fingers, Namjoon was gone.
“So, is the Realm as spooky as they say?”
Your trembling fingers reach for the umbrella ignoring Jungkook’s light joke in a form of a question and with big uncertainty weighing you down you swing the object teleporting you to the realm.
The realm placed itself on the outskirts of Seoul on the top of a hill. Invisible to the human eye, the large building changed its architecture style through the years from baroque to modernism and lastly modern minimalism. There were many rooms which you never entered becoming only vastly familiar with the tearoom and the main room.
The tearoom is where you brought your souls offering them tea in exchange for their memories. Those who refused to drink the tea usually dealt with Hoseok afterwards while the ones who did were sent to Jin and depending on the weight of their sins, they either went through the judgment trial which sends them straight to heaven or hell.
The door of the main room was slightly ajar as you neared it. Hushed words were exchanged among the deities, the scene oh so familiar to you indicating that whatever was waiting for you behind those doors meant no good. You take your time opening the doors allowing them to finish the talk, not very keen on hearing what they were discussing.
A set of stairs opened a path towards the four deities who were seated in their chairs arranged in a horizontal line. You stop at the centre of the room waiting for Jungkook to soak up the luxury of the room for it was his first time visiting the building.
With a quick glimpse, you try to read Yoongi’s expression, whose head was tilted to the side watching you. Namjoon on the other hand massages his temples stress visible on his features with eyes closed and brows raised. You were sure he was contemplating both his existence and your murder after he heard the news. Of course, Jungkook wasn’t at fault here, how could he be? Neither were you, however, it’s not like he would listen to you. After all, the sight of you sent him into a frenzy.
Jin sits calmly on his pink chair his face void of any emotions. Perhaps being the oldest out of the four gave him some advantage in masking his real feelings and thoughts.
“Namjoon informed us about the events of today. Please elaborate further on the matter.” Yoongi says and you step forward.
You catch Hoseok crossing his legs, resting his elbow on the top of his knee before he lazily plops his chin into the palm of his hand. He raises his brow after you talk about the sequence of events that led to this. “So, if I gathered this right,” he waves with his other hands, “a mere mortal managed to revive an already dead person?”
“Ye-“
Hoseok clicks his tongue which promptly shuts Jungkook up. “On top of this charade, he saw you and communicated with you? Correct?” you nod, “And after the ambulance took his very much alive body, he was still able to see you although you were in the invisible form? Are you positive you didn’t take off your fedora and accidentally exposed yourself?”
Hoseok had to be your least favourite deity although Namjoon was a close second. Faith and destiny were his domain, he meddled with people’s relationships much like cupid but with more power. He bared a face of an angel with his soft childlike smile that hid malicious intentions. He was hungry for perfection, starved to have his apprentices at the top of the chain. There was no room for mistakes when it came to him and his work. Although Seokjin or Jin as he preferred to be called, was the oldest and therefore the one that ruled the Realm sometimes you felt as if Hoseok was the one pulling the strings.
You nod.
He was about to come after you again when Seokjin intercepted for the first time since you and Jungkook came. “Did the writing on the envelope change?”
With a wave of his finger, an envelope appears on the palm of his hand. He reads through it, furrows his brows before rereading it. He mumbles something under his breath before he looks back at you.
“Are you sure the doctor was a mortal?” He looked slightly alarmed, though there was a twinkle in his eyes.
“Positive. I didn’t sense anything unusual about him.”
Namjoon looks at Jin as if catching the train of his thoughts. “You think it was a Goblin?”
“Perhaps,” Jin pinches the bridge of his nose, taking a minute before replying, “but they are forbidden to meddle in God’s work. Also, I am sure Y/N would pick up on his magical aura after all a blue sword piercing his chest is hard to miss. Nevertheless, goblins’ can hide their magical aura very well if they are experienced enough.”
The concept of Goblins wasn’t unfamiliar to you because you heard about them through various stories Yoongi told. They were mostly peaceful creatures serving a punishment of their own which differ greatly from yours. You coexisted in this world but rarely did your paths cross. Yoongi wasn’t fond of them for reasons he never explained. You had yet to hear about them causing trouble.
“You said he’s a doctor?” Yoongi’s voice shifts your focus to him. His eyes held a sparkle you rarely saw but could easily interpret as curiosity with a mixture of determination.
“That’s what he shouted when he approached,” Jungkook answers immediately which catches you by surprise. Hoseok spooked him enough to be silent up until now, you half expected him to avoid uttering a word until you leave.
“Interesting,” Jin whispers getting up from his chair, “Hoseok will give you further instructions while I dwell on this matter.”
Hoseok leans into his chair already bored with how the situation was dissolving. “You should start with the doctor since he seems to be the answer to our questions. Search for Taehyung to find the doctor. I doubt he would let him go to another hospital.”
Going back to Earth and mingling among the mundane in search for Taehyung drained every fibre of your being. You saw him everywhere, on billboards, magazines, and even huge screens on buildings but not in person. Learning of his status as the heir of the Kim empire made things even more difficult for you. The chances of him being in a hospital under his real name were slim and the chances of finding the doctor’s identity were even slimmer.
“Maybe we should call it a day, we searched high and low. If I have to walk through one more hospital hallway I will lose it. Can’t you feel a connection to him or something?” Jungkook huffs as you exit the latest hospital.
Hospitals were the place you visited the most especially the cancer ward. Jungkook was still fresh in this line of work, but he will soon learn that visiting the hospital will become a daily occurrence. After all, most deaths happen here.
“I guess we need to resort to other means if we want to find him.”
Jungkook opens his mouth to speak when you hit the umbrella against the ground sending circle-like waves through the area. In a matter of seconds, two ghosts appear in front of you trying to wiggle out of the chained spell you put on them.
They cower in front of you not daring to catch your gaze, afraid you might fish out their names and take them to the afterlife. One thing they were most terrified of.
“I will spare you today in exchange for a favour.” One of the souls slowly looks up still avoiding eye contact, her body language giving away a large amount of hatred she felt for you.
“What do you require Grim Reaper? You lied to us many times. You took many of us with the promise of heaven only to be sent to hell.” The ghost hisses.
“It looks like you don’t have much of a choice. Either you do this favour, or you face Yoongi.”
This seems to cause a shift inside of her because she narrows her eyes at you rethinking the deal. “What is the favour?”
Ripping an image of Taehyung from the magazine you held in your arm, you turn it towards them giving them enough time to observe his features. “Find where this person is currently staying and report back to me.”
“What if I refuse?” the other ghost bites back and for a second you see Jungkook freeze as you rise your fingers.
“With a swipe of a finger, you will find yourself in front of the God of vengeance. Seeing as you are lost souls wondering for more than twenty years, I am sure he won’t go easy on you.”
The second ghost huffs and the one who spoke to you looks at the picture again before agreeing. “We will report as soon as we find any information.”
You nod and they disappear leaving you and Jungkook alone.
“What the actual fuck was that Y/N?” Jungkook exhales blocking your view of yet another picture of Taehyung on the billboard.
“Lost souls,” You answer pushing him to the side, “something you shouldn’t concern yourself with. Namjoon doesn’t have any lost souls from what I gathered and not like you will be strong enough to chase after them.”
Souls only become lost when a young Reaper messes up. Not everyone reacts the same to the announcement of their death, while some weep and beg for mercy others try to escape. Some who manage to escape are labelled as lost souls. To stop this from happening Jin created the partnership between a junior Reaper and a senior Reaper. This allows the younger ones to do the job under careful supervision. Considering your age, you were always left to deal with the youngest recruits.
You being to walk away and Jungkook catches up to you, his mind racing into different directions. Today was too much for him since it was only a month after his conversion. Although you weren’t the one to spare your partners of the glory this work brought, today might have been too much even for you.
“What is a lost soul?” Jungkook was a curious person by nature, and you knew that each step you take while searching for Taehyung will be awaited with questions and concerns. However, the law of the Realm bonded you with him meaning you had to share problems and solutions.
“A soul that managed to escape their death. They are chased down by Yoongi mostly.”
Jungkook was silent for a while. Judging by his expressions the wheels in his head turn and connection the dots which lead to his conclusion. “So, Taehyung is a lost soul?”
“Yes.”
-
Jimin was on his sixth cup of coffee since morning, trying his hardest to pull his third shift. His body ran on caffeine his hands shaking slightly, and it was only a matter before he would collapse.
Without even noticing he dozed off, head lying on the reception desk. Only five minutes, he whispered to himself.
“Doctor Park?” Wendy’s hand gently shakes his body out of slumber.
In any other circumstances the nurse would give him some time to rest but the lab results he filed under urgent, and he requested immediately after they are done were in her hands.
“The results are back.”
Jimin rubs his eyes trying to clear his hazy vision. Wendy felt remorse after seeing the bags under his eyes and the paleness of his skin. She often nagged him about his bad sleep schedule and the obvious need to rest. He shrugged off her advice always putting patient’s care first and his health second.
He skims through the results and grunts in frustration. “No indicator of infection or prior disease. No bacteria, no nothing. There is no trauma on the blood vessels, his heart is in top form.”
“The results don’t match the condition. How can someone so healthy have a heart attack out of nowhere? And to survive it and show no heart trauma? Weird. Anyway, my shift is over. Good luck solving the case.” Wendy taps Jimin’s shoulder before taking off her apron and leaving the desk.
Jimin waves her goodbye and takes the results with him. He consulted with another cardiologist in their hospital, Do Kyungsoo. But just like Jimin, he found no cause for the heart attack or any trauma it might have left on the patient’s heart. This frustrated Jimin to oblivion because much to Jimin’s dismay Taehyung was persistent on leaving the hospital. With no solution to the problem, Jimin was reluctant on letting Taehyung go in fear of the heart attack striking again. It was a miracle he survived and Jimin knew he won’t be lucky the second time.
Pushing the door open he sees Taehyung scrolling on his phone bored out his mind. He underwent numerous examinations only for Jimin to come to the same conclusion over and over. Taeyhung glances up smiling at the young doctor knowing fully well he will be out of this hole in a matter of hours.
“How are you doing doctor?” Taehyung sings lowering the phone to have a better view of Jimin.
Trying his best not to roll his eyes at Taehyung’s enthusiasm Jimin places the results into the plastic paper holder hanging from the bed. “I am doing fine. You Mr Kim?”
“I told you to call me Taehyung or Tae. Mr Kim reminds me of my father, and I hope I don’t look that old. Do I?”
Jimin exhales tired of Taehyung’s antics. “Your lab results showed no sign of trauma or illness-“
“Which means you can’t keep me any longer.” Taehyung jumps out of his bed and only then does Jimin notice that he was fully dressed.
Before Jimin could comprehend what was happening Taehyung grabbed the white rose and a sheet of paper from the table close to his right and forces the paper into his hands. Discharge papers. Jimin knew people used their name and wealth to get out of different situations, but he hoped his hospital didn’t fall under the category of institutions that broke under the pressure of someone’s power. Especially when their health was in question.
“I guess it was nice spending my free time with and it must sadden you that I am leaving.” He mockingly ruffles Jimin’s hair earning a glare for the shorter man.
“You do realise if this happens again you are good as dead. Chances of surviving a second heart attack at your age are below 5%.” Jimin follows Taehyung as he walks out into the hallway.
Taehyung shrugs not bothered by statistics. “As the doctor before you said, I am in good shape so odds of it repeating are slim. Slim sounds nice so I will take my chances.”
Taehyung walks a few steps before Jimin impatient to escape his presence that inflicted irritation. He pushed the backdoor entrance of the hospital noticing his black Range Rover parked just three places away. Jimin tries his best to keep up with Taehyung’s big steps, the exhaustion slowly catching up to him.
“Mister Kim, please listen to me,” He leaps forward stopping in front of Taehyung, “at least let me do occasional check-ups?”
“I swear to God Park if you don’t move this instance-“Jimin waits for Taehyung to finish the sentence but he never does instead he stands frozen in time and place with eyes widened in both fear and shock.
Turning around to see what caused such reaction from Taehyung, Jimin comes face to face with a woman around his age dressed in a black suit with a fedora covering half of her face. Next to her stands a young man probably in his early twenties wearing similar attire as her. Reapers. He vaguely remembers seeing them that day when he gave CPR to Taehyung but he didn’t pay much attention because he never would’ve guessed who they are. Taehyung seizes Jimin’s hand gripping it harshly turning the knuckles of his hands white. He pushes Jimin in front of him.
“How did you find me?” He managed to stutter out loud, “Answer me!”
The Reapers move forward at the same time as Taehyung releases his grip on Jimin’s hand and runs towards the doors. Before he could reach the knob, a force pulls him backwards, causing him to lose his footing and fall on his back. Jimin rushes to Taehyung trying to get him back on his feet. He looks in the direction of the two figures only to see them standing above them.
“What you want from me?” Taehyung cries out, his hands clutching the rose in his hands.
“I don’t know who you are but if you don’t stop immediately, I will be forced to call the police,” Jimin speaks up hoping to intimidate enough to escape without revealing himself.
This caused the woman to stop in her tracks, her gaze locking with Jimin. “You can see me?”
Jimin laughs through gritted teeth. “What kind of a stupid question is that?”
The woman appears stunned her eyes shifting between him and Taehyung. The man next to her mumbles something into her ear but she dismisses it promptly.
“How can you see me?”
She whispers more to herself and Jimin finds himself plotting an escape route but as he tries to move with Taehyung’s arm wrapped around his back, they find themselves hitting an invisible barrier. No matter how many times Jimin tried to move past one point, he was pushed back.
“Y/N,” The man speaks up and the woman next to him perks up at the mention of her name, “What do we do now?”
Y/N.
For an unknown reason, Jimin flinches at the name. It kept repeating inside of his mind like a broken record messing with his feelings. Trying to shake his head off the thought of the woman and her name, the barrier he had around himself that hid his magical aura became weaker. That allowed Y/N to catch a glimpse of the sword buried in his chest.
Jimin reaches out for Taehyung’s forehead and with a mumble of a spell, he’s knocked out cold. “I don’t know what your business is with him but he’s under my protection.”
Y/N steps forward in a desperate to stop Jimin from fleeing the scene but alas it was too late for the Goblin had already transported himself and the lost soul.
“I am guessing the doctor was a Goblin?” Jungkook adds scratching the back of his neck.
Bonus:
Hoseok was never the one to question the assignments he was given. He believes each one was given for a reason; it was how the faith wanted it. However, for the first time in many years, he was hesitant about his actions knowing the extent to which it will affect the people. Usually, he never bothered to get familiar with the consequence of his action since they were minor and durable. Now, however, he kept reflecting on them even though they were yet to happen.
Pushing the key into the hole, he unlocks the familiar office he visited many times when in need of advice. Guilt seeped into the pores of his being but the force to do good by faith was stronger. The envelope rests on top of neatly ordered files. Hoseok inhales and exhales fingers delicately opening the envelope. He peeks at the content gathering the needed information before pushing the black letter back. With a small spell, the envelope seals itself and Hoseok closes the door locking the office whispering an oblivion spell to erase any traces of him being there.
He can’t remember when was the last time he visited Earth. Always has his nose deep into paperwork and reports from his apprentices. The last time he visited Earth he made a man miserable for eternity and now he was about to interfere with his life again. Jimin exits the Hospital and walks in the direction of the nearby café he visited often. Hoseok notices the strings around him taking the shade of light purple colour and with a small utter he casts the binding spell.
Sorry, he mouths to Jimin although the latter can’t hear or see him.
Pushing the scarf over his face he follows the Goblin as he suddenly changes his course opting for a coffee shop further down the street.
Watching from side-lines Hoseok notices Y/N and Jungkook roaming the Namsan park awaiting three o’clock. He eyes the red string binding you to Taehyung as it takes on a more vivid colour once he approaches the location. The clock strike at three pm and Taehyung’s body slumps to the floor gathering a crowd of onlookers.
Hoseok pulls his lips into a line waiting for it to happen. The Goblin takes notice of the commotion and before he could weigh the consequences of his action, he springs in front of Taehyung pulling his soul back into his body through a simple touch of a hand. Hoseok observes as the strings begin to intertwine sealing the faith of three different people. When the two strings create a third one binding Taehyung and Jimin, Hoseok mutter one more sorry before leaving the scene of the crime.

Note
why are all the series on hold except for jimin's? 😔
University took a lot of my free time. When I started writing the series I didn't think I would be applying for master's because I missed the due date. However I managed to apply and got accepted. I didn't think it would be sooo exhausting 🥲 All the projects, the research, the studying and the amount of books I have to read. I couldn't juggle both uni and stories, and I wanted to write them so I am satisfied. Therefore, I put them all on hold except for the one I feel most inspired to write. Hopefully, from next month on I will have more time to write ☺️

Author’s note: I’ve decided to divide the story into five (maybe less depends on how fast I can write and update) chapters. The cold November greeted the city of Seoul with low temperature and humidity, the elderly said this autumn may become one of the coldest ones. The snow that fell this morning slowly transitioned into a seeping rain obstructing people’s work. Droplets hit against the window, the wind outside carrying umbrellas as if they were made of paper. The rain drizzled into a storm, humans running for nearby shelter, the doors of the coffee opening every few seconds.
You picked at your nails, the tea in front of you providing some warmth as you waited for time to pass. Jungkook sitting across from you slurped his hot chocolate in such delight savouring the flavour, the assignment completely forgotten by now. You take two sips of the mango tea enjoying the short-lived silence, when you breathe in you hear tiers screeching.
The cup shakes from the impact, a bit of the tea spilling over your suit. Some scream and some stay frighteningly holding onto their seats as you get up adjusting the fedora. People piled up, sirens are hearable in the distance. You walk towards the scene in a slow manner careful not to soak your new clothes. Firefighters run past you towards the smashed car. They try their best to open the crashed doors, yelling at people to step back.
You halt behind the circle gathered at the scene. Two people stand not far away confused and disoriented. A man in his mid-thirties cries for attention waving at an old woman as he pleads for her to look at him. The taillight of their car throws a ray of light on the man’s hand, the ring on his finger shining underneath it. The woman next to him, presumably his wife, watches in disbelief as they pull her body out of the car.
Your heels click against the wet asphalt, the umbrella hiding a portion of your face. Drawing the envelope out of the inner pocket of your coat, you walk to them. The woman looks at you. “Choi, maiden Yoo, Jessica; born on 15th February 1989. Died at 10:03 pm on 1st November 2021. Cause of death brain hemorrhage. This is you right?”
The woman cries out, grabbing her husband’s attention. Blood gushes from the wound on her forehead colouring her white turtleneck into an unpleasant crimson red. Jungkook rests beside you, his hands shaking slightly. He swallows as he makes eye contact with the husband, the white flower in his hands almost dropping at the sight.
The man’s injuries show that he took most of the blow, his body severely damaged; blood dripping from different parts of his body. Jungkook not being able to digest this averts his gaze as he slowly reads from the envelope. “Choi Jihoon. Born on 4th July 1983. Died at 10:05 on 1st November 2021. Cause of death cardiac arrest.”
Jungkook steps towards the husband pushing the white lily into his hand and quickly steps back. Before both could cause any commotion, you swat your fingers and black smoke emerges from the ground swallowing them whole. In a blink of an eye, they are gone only small trails of blood left as evidence of them ever being here.
Jungkook shivers gripping his suit to hide the tremor of his hands. “Where do you think they’ll end?”
You shrug, the envelope in your hands dissolving into pieces that fall in the puddle below you. “That’s for the old deity Seokjin to decide and for Hoseok to carry out.”
Jungkook’s doe-like eyes look up at you, the concern in them making you sneer. “I gave him the lily as Namjoon instructed. He’s going to heaven, right?”
At the sight of a shaky Jungkook bit of sadness tugs at your cold heart. His innocent eyes and trembling hands reminded you of yourself when you first started.
You gasp for air, your body feeling foreign as you are engulfed by darkness. Eyelids felt heavy as stones, tiredness flowing through your veins as you try to move your body. The numbness of your arms and legs sends you into a frenzy. Screams are stuck at the back of your throat and the anxiety of the situation made you feel like you were suffocating. A burning sensation hits your body making you hiss in pain. You try to fight but after a while you grow tired, the pain becoming unbearable.
Sudden circles of light peek through the darkness painting your vision in colours. You feel tingles rush through your body, arms, and legs under your control again. Rubbing your eyes, your hazy vision becomes clear. A man is crunched before you dressed in a black hanbok adorned by gold speckles. His long blond hair was pulled into a ponytail that rest along his back. His eyes held a sparkle of evil tinted with malice. The red scar that went from his forehead all down his eye to his right cheek gave you goosebumps. Everything about him scares you.
He smirks at you, finding enjoyment in your misery. “Welcome to hell number Seven.”
The brutality of this job took a toll on you and made you immune to the screams and cries.
You turn away from Jungkook, the view making you feel all sorts of emotions. As you walk away from the scene you can hear his heavy footsteps follow you behind. You drown the whispers and cries of people nearby and with Jungkook to your left, you twirl the umbrella twice before black smoke comes around both of you and transports you to your house.
Your talent for losing things proves to be troublesome as you are unable to find the keys on your second attempt. Jungkook stands there, his sulking figure hanging a grey cloud of depression over your own. His gaze drifts to your fingers as they rummage over your pockets. He just sighs and without a word walks past you and through the locked door. A surge of panic washes over you at his usages of powers in public but soon it settles down after you notice the empty street of your neighborhood.
Much to your dismay, a figure you wished to avoid at all costs opens the door. Namjoon’s white coat hangs over his elbow as he steps away offering you some space. You huff and throw the umbrella into its stand as you follow his huge frame. The loud sound of television plays through the house when you enter your living room. A voice you distinguish well shouts over it. You can already imagine Yoongi’s legs plopped on your brand-new sofa as he stuffs himself with chips the crumbles leaving orange stains. You shudder at the exact scenario that awaits you. Not wanting to spark a heated argument with the God of Death you ignore his existence and head towards the kitchen.
Yoongi notices you, unfortunately. How wouldn’t he with the Namjoon’s loud footsteps following you behind. His whine is a good indicator that he wasn’t in a good mood and you didn’t want to worsen. “Took you long enough.”
Namjoon stops at the threshold leaning against the wooden frame. “How did he do?
Just then you notice Jungkook’s absence which further dampers your mood knowing fully well you will have to finish the report on your own. “Okay.”
Namjoon huffs not satisfied with your lack of elaboration. The deity’s aura shifts to a dark blue and you know you’ve hit a sore spot. “That’s not a good enough answer.”
“What do you want me to say? He was phenomenal? The best of his class? He gave him the lily. Job done.”
Namjoon stares at you narrowing his eyes. It was a stare you were familiar with. It was a constant reminder of how unworthy you were compared to others. It was a stamp of his constant interpretation of you as a mistake that deity has made. You shouldn’t have gotten a chance for redemption; his words occasionally echo in your mind. Through years you’ve learned to conceal the irritation he arose in you but every few years you had the bad luck of being paired with one of his apprentices. Like now for example.
“She’s just like you.” Namjoon hisses accusingly at Yoongi. The lack of response or in better words no response from Yoongi further stirs Namjoon’s anger. This was one of the many reasons why you were grateful that Yoongi was your mentor and not Namjoon or Hoseok.
“If he got the job done, what’s the issue?” Yoongi mutters with his mouth full. You cringe at the sight while Namjoon rolls his eyes.
“Do you even listen to me?” Namjoon was on the verge of having a mental breakdown, “Jungkook is new to this. He needs to get used to it. Have someone walk him through this grotesque job. Preferably someone with a gentler soul than this. “
His eyes rank over you, and you roll yours at the pathetic display of concern he was showing for his new intern.
“Jungkook isn’t supposed to be babied or sheltered. Today’s assignment is on the lower side of the gore scale. If you keep micromanaging him, you will have an incompetent reaper.” Yoongi interrupted Namjoon.
“You talk as if he didn’t commit a great sin,” you speak up, “he’s in the same boat as all of us. Stop making him special.”
Yoongi snorts and Namjoon mutters we’ll talk about this later before disappearing into thin air. He was too soft and too caring of his interns always going the extra mile to keep them safe and sheltered from the real world. His interns were considered the wallflowers among other grim reapers, having sinned so insignificantly they were given less than a hundred years to pay it off. Unlike you who has been serving as Yoongi’s intern for already a thousand years.
“He’s traumatized.” You whisper as you harshly scrub your hands.
You picked that habit up on the second mission. One that is carved deep into your mind and will follow you until you leave your service as a reaper.
Yoongi notices the change in your behaviour but doesn’t dwell on it. He throws the empty chips bag using his hanbok to clean his greasy fingers. The topic of emotion was Namjoon’s forte something Yoongi never discussed with his interns, not that they deserved it anyway.
“He’ll be doing this for sixty years. He has plenty of time to get used to it. Moreover, he does the bare minimum. It’s you who has it the worst out of all.”
You look at him before averting your gaze to the tiles of your kitchen wall. The knuckles of your hand hurt from the harsh rubbing, cracks forming on your pale skin. Through your time here you’ve seen people who you befriended die; some in miser, some in poverty, some in pain and anguish. Not one death is natural. After a while you learned to keep your distance, afraid your curse will somehow spread onto the people you love.
“I’ll bring the report by tomorrow,” Yoongi nods.
You take notice of his hair as he runs a hand through it, the feeling of short hair is foreign to him. “I see you tried a new look.”
He clicks his tongue. “Emphasize on tried. Hoseok wants me to get a suit, he says the hanbok is overdated.”
“I partially agree with him. It’s not the 1500s anymore, it’s the 21st century and we should strive to emancipate ourselves. However, the hanbok was your trademark.”
He takes a minute to drink in your words before he shrugs and disappears. A part of you wanted to see how Jungkook was doing but you figured he needed some time alone. When Namjoon mentioned Seokjin being out of his mind when he partnered you two, you couldn’t agree more.
Usually, reapers who got partnered were of similar personalities and often a good fit for each other. You exchanged your fair share of partners through the years seeing each one of them leave. The last one though managed to slither into your heart and stay there. Jinyoung was a special person, one that knew the ins and outs of you. He was your family and losing him took an emotional toll on you. You can only imagine the surprise when Seokjin ambushed you with a new partner and a young one, nevertheless.
You turn off the lights and head to the bedroom ignoring the light that perked from beneath Jungkook’s door. Lying on the bed you stare at the date on the calendar, the nauseous feeling creeping into you. Drinking the pills on your nightstand you breathe in, knowing fully well tonight will be painful.
You close your eyes ironically prying for less pain.
Seokjin stands in front of you, a displeased look on his face. You cower behind Yoongi, the latter noticing it and pushing you out from his cover. You felt uncomfortable knowing that all four deities requested your attendance at today’s meeting.
“You understand that each grim reaper receives a punishment that he carries through his afterlife depending on the sin he caused in his previous life,” Seokjin speaks.
You nod.
“We have discussed what your punishment might be Y/N.” Namjoon continues, his snake-like eyes making you want to cry.
The punishment is a ritual that is held on the tenth anniversary of your birth as a grim reaper. The punishment might be small like a scar or bigger like the ability to feel other people’s pain. The severity of it depended on the brutality of your sin.
Hoseok sends you an apologetic smile. “The punishment has been decided upon and you shall receive it in a matter of minutes. Your mentor Yoongi will lead you through it.”
You heard from Yoongi about the punishment and how it wasn’t as severe as you thought. Your partner at the time Taemin told you about his and although it did inflict pain it was also cathartic. Somehow you found that hard to believe when you recall his full-blown dramatic crying at the sight of couples.
“You will have to learn to live with the grief Y/N. Remember this isn’t the vengeance of the Gods, this is your one step closer to a redemption arch.” Seokjin says and waves his arm signalling Yoongi to start the ritual.
Your mentor grabs a hold of your wrist pushing you in the direction of a big mirror that stood in the middle of the room. You watch his reflection through it, his eye colour shifting slowly to a red hue. Before you could comprehend what was happening a throbbing pain shot through you.
Your head felt like it was falling apart, the room spinning. Yoongi mumbles a few incoherent words and suddenly you find yourself in an unfamiliar room. Two voices argue throwing profanities between sentences. Their faces remain a blur despite your attempts to sharpen your vision. The figures continue to bicker back and forward. A hot breath tickles your ear and with a few hushed words, a variety of emotions plunge your chest. Crying out in pain as memories, one after another flash in your head. Your legs betray you sending you straight to the floor. Yoongi catches you in time before you fall.
You don’t’ bother to stifle the cries as you scrunch your shirt in a lame attempt to minimize the pain. The burning in your chest makes it harder to breathe while fighting against Yoongi’s grip. Despite all your efforts, you remain in place and watch through blur as one of the men gasps when a sword pierces his heart, and he falls into his pool of blood.
You yell out his name as Yoongi reads out loud. “- dies at 3:00 on 2nd November 1472. Cause of death stab wound from a sword.”
Yoongi watches as you fall apart bit by bit until you plummet at his feet. He kneels before you, touches your forehead and mutters the words that seal your punishment.
“The feeling of seeing the man die will remain to haunt you every year on the same date.”
You wake up drenched in your sweat with your vision impaired from the needle-like pain in the left side of your head. Black dots hinder your sight and despite it, you try to manoeuvre your way out of the bed to the bathroom. You juggle your footing alas unsuccessfully as you slip on the stairs making you topple down. The impact twisting your ankle and you find time to curse Yoongi for bribing you to buy his bed with stairs. The pills prove to be shit as you hiss loudly from a new sharp hit now directed to your heart. You try to stabilize your breathing when a soft hand grabs your waist.
“I am here.” Jungkook’s voice comes as a band-aid to the pain you were feeling.
He picks you up placing you back on the bed. He tucks the sheets under you and lays beside you, gripping your hand tightly as you cry out. The feeling of the sword piercing your skin slowly becomes bearable as Jungkook soothes the lines of your forehead with his fingers. He continues to hold you through the night whispering calming words as tears roll down your cheeks.
____
The morning coffee leaves a bitter taste in your mouth for two reasons. First, Jungkook’s gaze holds an emotion you can’t exactly pinpoint which pierces the false coat of calmness you are displaying. Second, the black envelope delivered to you this morning by Yoongi is the culprit of the nauseous feeling swirling inside you. It lays safely between you and Jungkook as you stir your coffee, a lame attempt to distract yourself from the troubling thoughts.
“Open it.”
You stop mid-stir to look at Jungkook. His eyes bore into yours and for the second time today, you feel like you don’t know who this person sitting opposite of you is. It was as if the roles were reversed, the storms brew inside of you making you a mess while he remains calm. You wince at the sound of the spoon hitting the cup as you let it go, fingers twitching to open the envelope.
The black wax your tear-off holds the initials of your mentor Yoongi, a person you spent a whole millennium with. There on a black paper written in a neat golden cursive (handwriting you can identify as Seokjin’s) lies the name of your last soul.
Kim Taehyung. Born on 30th December 1995; dies on 2nd November 2022. Location and time of death: Namsan Park, 3:00 pm.
Jungkook snatches the envelope out for you to grasp reading the information out loud. He glances at his wrist quickly and tosses the envelope back to you. “We have one hour before it happens.”
You nod, gulping the coffee. The reasons behind the sudden storm happening inside of you were obvious to everyone but you, ironically. Having to come to terms with your life ending wasn’t something you could accept lightly. Living on Earth for one thousand years coated you into a false sense of immortality.
Jungkook coughs interrupting your train of thoughts. Tossing the cup into the sink, you exhale a breath you never realise you were holding. Walking past Jungkook you take one last glance at the living room; the first one you became fond of. Pushing the rush of nostalgic emotions, you fetch the umbrella from its stand.
“Let’s go.” You mumble to Jungkook twirling the umbrella as smoke surges transporting you to the park.
Due to the low temperature, the number of people in the park was smaller than you have anticipated. Walking with Jungkook felt like such a cliché way to spend the last few minutes of your life. Especially since you occasionally took morning strolls through the park to shrug off the extra baggage the missions put on you.
“How do you feel?” Jungkook cuts through the silence.
You look up at the sky, the grey clouds concealing the little bit of sunshine that struggled to peak. “Fine. It’s inevitable anyway.”
Jungkook shakes his head seeing through your façade of calmness. “What do you think your connection with Taehyung is?”
You halt. Jungkook turns around only noticing you stopped when he was a few steps away. His question plays in your head like a broken record. “I am not sure. You probably heard the rumours about me.”
He nods pushing the scarf over his mouth to conceal the embarrassing pink colour adorning his cheeks. “I’ve heard a few. I don’t pay much attention to what others say.”
When you chuckle Jungkook’s eyes widen, the sound so unfamiliar to him. “Whatever the connection might be, it’s a cursed one.”
Jungkook opened his mouth to argue back but was cut off by a woman screaming bloody murder. Right behind him, a group of people gather around the woman who seems to be losing her mind.
“Someone call 911,” the woman screams as she kneels beside the body sobbing into the man’s chest. “Taehyung please wake up. I am begging you.”
Jungkook and you slowly approach the small crowd of people. There on the ground lies Kim Taehyung, your last soul. Head resting on a scarf, eyes shut with chest slowly heaving up and down on the brink of collapsing. There were no visible injuries, and you quickly scan the envelope that slowly begins adding details. Cardiac arrest.
You glance at him. The curly locks of his hair have been pushed aside allowing you to see his full face. He was handsome no doubt with the slender nose, the plump shape of his lips, and the sharp jawline. You take a quick look at his clothing, noticing the expensive fashion brands. It didn’t take a genius to know he came from a wealthy family.
You watch his chest slowly fall; the last breath exhaled. The woman next to him weeps, holding his body close to hers as the people around collectively gasp in shock.
To your right, you feel the shift of the universe and the body of Taehyung appearing. He’s in a sitting position next to his dead body, mouth opening and closing like a fish. You take a minute, more for yourself than him, to observe the scene. Jungkook summons the white lily in his hands and for some unknown reason, a part of you feels relieved that he has a sure passage to heaven.
Approaching Taehyung slowly as not startle him you pull the envelope.
“Kim Taehyung.” This grabs his attention shifting him towards you. When he catches your gaze, a sharp stab goes through your heart, and you hiss in pain. Concealing it with a frown you take a deep breath.
“Y-yes?”
Before you can continue a man emerges from the crowd. “I am doctor let me through.”
He lightly pushes the woman off of Taehyung and lies his delicate fingers on his neck checking the pulse. He curses and quickly positions his arms over the heart. You watch as he sings a song whilst performing the CPR in sync with the rhythm of the melody. Taehyung’s face twist in an uncomfortable state, the doctor’s action causing a rift between life and death. Jungkook looks at you questioningly, but you dismiss the intrusion. This wouldn’t be the first time someone meddled with life and death.
Taehyung lunges over, gasping in pain. “Shouldn’t we do something about this?”
You shake your head. “We can’t interfere with portable between life and death.”
Taehyung turns towards Jungkook and you, eyes wide and the veins on his neck pop up from the struggle to contain the pain. “Who are you?”
You pull your lips into a thin line. Jungkook impatiently hops from one side to another as you cough and continue.
“Born on 30th December. Died on 2nd November-“
“Who the fuck are you?” Taeyhung screams once more.
“Are you sure we can’t stop this?” Jungkook whispers urgently pointing to the man reviving Taehyung.
“Cause of death Cardiac Arrest. This is you?” You ignore Jungkook’s please as you finish reading. Taehyung curses at you and falls onto the side from the amount of pain. Jungkook rushes towards him pushing the lily into his hand.
You take a step forward ready to twirl your umbrella when suddenly Taehyung’s figure begins to slowly disappear. White light seeps through the air and into his lifeless body. You and Jungkook stop dead in tracks glancing at Taehyung’s dead body that suddenly springs to life, chest moving up and down as he coughs fighting to catch a breath. The pale face of the doctor regains some colour as he sits next to the patient.
“Call 911 he still needs to be taken to a hospital.” The doctor says throwing his coat over Taehyung to provide some warmth.
You stand there completely frozen. Your breathing hitches, heaps of sweat form on your forehead as a rush of lethargy takes over you. Nothing had prepared you for such an outcome, but the consequences of it were far worse than you had anticipated.
As Taehyung was ushered by the ambulance team he kept looking and pointing at your and Jungkook’s frame shouting. “Mina take them away from me. Look they are right there. I am not crazy they came for my soul. Mina help me.”
Mina would look in your direction but judging by the confused expression she saw nothing.
“It will be alright Taehyung. We’ll be alright,” was the last thing Mina said before she took the white lily from Taehyung’s grip and closed the door of the ambulance.
