IF I write The Outsiders content, should I use present or past writing tense? I used to write in a weird way of past (Don't ask me how I was switching tense lmaoo), but my current writing style is in present tense

 It was cold out. And, it was late. It was probably nearing 11:15 at night, perhaps even later. But there was something about the night that made him feel calm. His thoughts were smooth as he walked even with the material of his denim jeans freezing against his legs.

It's cold out, and it's late, probably nearing 11:15 at night. But there's something about the night that makes him feel calm. His thoughts are smooth as he walks even though the denim of his jeans are freezing against his leg.
