The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold - Wu Sangui & Yoshiko Kawashima

The final chapter of Volume II went up a little while ago and I have been diving into the next parts. Chapter VIII dealt with a duo of traitors from different eras, facing off against each other in the game of Go!

Along with their histories, I tried my best to learn the game, had some fun, and realized I am hopelessly useless at it... but I will keep playing to see if I can improve against those wily CPUs on a SNES version of Go that I found.

As these little detours into other traitors take me to other places and times, but only for a chapter. Even though I always feeling like I'm short changing their stories, I keep adding and learning new things along the way so I hope you will too!

With motion assistance by Yes Illustration (@yes_illustration on instagram) and music from the Quintet's 'Terranigma', originally composed by Miyoko Kobayashi and orchestrated here by Malcolm Robinson.

Terranigma and the Quintet games had a strong influence on the comic so I thought it would be fitting to put it to one of my favourite pieces of music from the games!

The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold - Shajar al-Durr

One of those rabbit holes I went down after reading a short paragraph by Will Durant that summed up a person's life, in this case it concerned the manner of their death. Wanted to work this into the story for a long time now.

Found out a lot about Shajar al-Durr and the time period that had criss-crossed other points I've read about, but never dove in before! More to be read in the future but for now, Chapter VII has Arnold running around a museum and gallery, heavily inspired by the local Royal Ontario Museum.

Included here is a brief outline of her tale that I hope will encourage anyone to read more about the Sultana!

More history interludes! This time refocusing on a period of Arnold's stint running Philadelphia!

Circling back to the main star after delving into different histories was fun, I had to refresh my memory as I'd read all about this years ago when I started the series.

In Chapter VI, Arnold faces off against an embittered version of himself, sipping tea in a run down cabin by the sea. It was just a vague idea at one point, scribbled down to approach later. A long road getting there, happy seeing how far the story has come (and how far it still has to go!).

The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold - Mir Jafar

Another history interlude featured in Benedict Arnold’s journey, this time he runs into the infamous Mir Jafar!

I ended up reading far beyond his point in history to get an idea of British Rule in India and was really taken in by a lot of the stories, especially Yasmin Khan's book! Looking to read their other works when time allows. I did my best to summarize and some of the sources are noted below (although not all dealt with Mir Jafar).

These are spread out over the course of Chapter V. Arnold is invited to a celebration of sorts before it is rudely interrupted by a gang of monstrous unicorns!

The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold - Mata Hari

The history interludes have been moving along in the comic which is now reaching the conclusion of the first Volume!  During Benedict Arnold’s journey, he’s been running into fellow traitors, one of which is Mata Hari, featured here!

Her story is fascinating and seems to change a lot based on the source and time period.  I took a shot at summarizing some of the key points of her life to hopefully give one a decent overview and encourage people to read further to see what they think!

The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold - Some pages!

In between colouring, I’ve been working away and posting my Historical Fantasy series, The Odyssey of Benedict Arnold!

Here’s a sample of where I’m at but so far, 100ish pages in!

I’ve dragged Mr. Arnold though rivers, cities, skies, and a desert!  All the while meeting up with the likes of Charles I & Mata Hari. This is the first volume of a planned four, but lots more to get done and share in the meantime.

Will try to keep more regular updates so the series will give less of a location whiplash every time it appears (although that’s part of the story).

Washing up on the shores of an unknown land, Arnold is plagued by voices detailing his life and all that has been said of him since his act of treason, true or otherwise. Been working on this for some time and as of writing this, there's 120 pages set! Opening Chapter will be available as a 36-Page Mini-Booklet for TCAF 2021 (Starting May 8th! More details soon).
