The age old question - How are the Herondales BLONDE????

(Specifically talking about Jace's branch of the family)

We know that Marcus Herondale, and every Herondale after him, has blonde hair and blue eyes (save Jace's gold eyes) and from the brief research I did, I believe this is a correct family tree (?). So I am so, so curious how the Herondales went from Cordelia and James, who each have very dark hair and black/gold eyes, to blonde hair and blue eyes lol. The eyes make sense because the Herondales have had blue eyes for many generations before James, but where on earth did the blonde hair come from??? Yes, the Herondales had blonde hair before Will and Cecily (Edmund and Tobias canonically had blonde hair, can probably assume William did as well) but that was like, 4-5 generations ago. It doesn't make sense for the gene to have magically reappeared. So I think it makes most sense here that the blonde hair came from a wife that married into the family. What do you guys think??

im rereading tda and, this isnt a big deal or even relevant at all, but i just now noticed that in lady midnight emma mentions that the kitchen in the institute has yellow walls, but then in lord of shadows kits says theyre blue lol
