Calling on all Disney Beauty and the Beast fanfic readers and writers!

This year, Beauty and the Beast Week will include a podfic exchange as one of the ways to participate in the event.

🎤 What is it?

Sign up as a podficcer or a fanfic writer, or both. I'll match up a podficcer to a writer with BatB fics, the podficcer picks one, records themselves reading it, and then posts the audio as a new work on AO3.

🎤 Who can participate?

Anyone with an AO3 account can be a podficcer. Yes, even with your “weird voice”! (I promise, no one thinks you sound weird recorded except for you.) Yes, even with just your phone to record!

Anyone who has ever written a Disney Beauty and the Beast fic can request a podfic in this exchange. Although only new works are eligible for BatB Week, existing fics can be turned into podfic, because the podfic itself will be the new work that’s included in BatB Week. In fact, existing fics are preferred because it gives the podficcer more to choose from and more time to record.

The only limit is that no podficcer will be expected to record for a work longer than 4k words, whether it's a one-shot or a chapter from a longer work.

🎤 How does it work?

Sign up: Both podficcers and writers sign up with the Google form here by June 10. 

Match: We'll have podficcers and writers matched by June 17, so keep an eye on the communication method you choose on the Google form!

Record: You’ll have 2 months to record and edit your podfic. I'll be posting some resources for free audio editing and tips to help out.

Create on AO3: Once you have your podfic made, create a work on AO3 that is "inspired by" the original fic if it is on AO3 or link to it if it's hosted on another site, and then in the work include a link(s) to where the podfic audio file is hosted, such as Google Drive. More detailed instructions will be shared later.

Post: Post the AO3 work on the day of the week with the prompt that the podfic relates to. Ask the author or use your own judgment to decide this, or, if you're unsure, just post on day 7, the free day. Full posting instructions will follow in a later post.

🎤 Why should I join?

Accessibility: Some people prefer to listen to audiobooks for a variety of reasons, and this helps expand their options for enjoying fanfic.

It's fun: It's a fun, lovely way to give a gift to fanfic authors and build up the BatB fandom.

Anti-AI: People have been trying to monetize fanfic with AI reading it, and this is a way to throw up a middle finger at this effort.

It's easy: If you don't have any ideas of something new to create for BatB Week, this is an easy way to still join us. Anyone can do this!

Note: I can’t guarantee that everyone who signs up will be able to do it, because I don’t know if I’ll get an even number of podficcers and writers to match. I’ll do my best to match everyone, though!

I actually do feel like the "unemployed friend on a Tuesday" meme actually helps de-stigmatize unemployment because it frequently affirms that when you don't have a job you're more likely to be getting up to some weird shit rather than just lazing around. But I also feel like the unemployed friend is frequently up to some random shit because there's a whole pile of miscellaneous life tasks that full-time employment keeps people from. The unemployed friend is helping their cousin move, or babysitting, or checking in with a neighbor with mobility issues. The unemployed friend is a walking thesis on the inflexibility of our current labor landscape and just how much work exists outside of work.
