Behind the Scenes of Mushroom Musume: Making art out of TRESSHHHH

Hey everyone, Zaozoruzhna here again with a look behind the scenes at the creation of some of our art assets!

LAST TIME we showed off the process of how we develop photos from real life to how they appear in game (more or less, the knitty-gritty was left out but suffice to say there's a lot of tedium in GIMP that would be alleviated if I just learned how macros work - but I digress), but this time I want to show off how the process allows us to have fun with detail!

What you see here is an absolute dumpster-fire mess work of art on my living room floor. Just as with last time (albeit lazier this time around), I used a sheet for a backdrop. I also set up a small shoebox as the base for everything to go around/on. And while it looks like... well, a bunch of garbage all thrown together (and the grill to a lincoln towncar for some reason), you can kiiiiiinda see where it's going when you get the final, unedited picture:

Don't worry, you can say it: "Zaozy, that... still looks like, um... well, trash," and you're pretty much right. A few fun facts: the paper towel rolls on the left were stuffed with dish rags (for rigidity) and then stuck with toothpicks that were then covered in foil to create spiral staircases (these don't turn out super obvious in the final product, but if you know what you're looking for, they're there), also, the lichen hanging over everything is wizard's beard; there's a bunch growing out where I live in a specific spot so I just went and... yoinked a lot of it. Oh, and lastly: yes, that's the metal gear solid collection in a ps3. I needed a shape and the ps3 fit it, then the cover slid open - which I forgot it does - and I guess mgs was still in there??? (it's been years since I played...) So yeah, lil' cameo there. Anyway, without further ado, the final product:

I haven’t unlocked all the mushrooms in Mushroom Musume yet so I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure there’s no bleeding tooth fungus/strawberries and cream mushroom daughter and anyway I doodled one up.

Mushroom Musume Behind the Scenes: Teasing a Background for the Steam Release ✨

Hey there! It's Spring, a time rife for foraging and feeling the sun against your skin (casual reminder: sunscreen is your friend)

But for us, it's a time of creative passion as we continue to crank up the development of Mushroom Musume for its Steam Debut! (also a casual reminder: wishlist us on steam - though the sunscreen thing is probably more important in the grand scheme...)

That means, new writing, new music, and new art. But sometimes, we come up with a scenario where we can't just use a simple photo and we have to get... creative.

What you see here is a mess on Zaozy's living room floor a careful setup of light sources and the current scene in question. A magic eraser cut in half (and further cut to add texture) rests on the edge of an apple box that's placed in front of a globe. The globe in turn has a vinyl record resting on it (Afterthoughts, by Red Vox - absolutely stunning pressing, but most importantly, it has a lot of black, with some white on the edge; the intention is that the white will offer a smooth sort of gradient - you'll see) and everything is backdropped by a black comforter cloth.

The resulting photo that is what will make it into the game was taken pressed right up against the magic eraser (the light behind is on a chair because any lower and a shadow would be cast over the scene as the picture was being taken)

There was a specific intention to the focus (remember the mention of the edge of the vinyl offering a slight gradient? It worked as intended!) of the shot, and while the detailing on the magic eraser will undoubtedly get lost in the processing, it allows for guidance on where to airbrush some shadows for later in the process.

The final product - and what will eventually be in game (after some further touch ups and edits in Gimp) becomes this:

Hi! Is there any specific details for Copper (Out-of-This-World) girl's appearance? I want to draw her, but I'm not good at remembering dialogue describing her TwT thank you!

Hello! I'll talk a lil bit under the cut about what's described for her in game + some bonus Dev Thoughts™️

Here's her main in-game description, paragraph-ized:

"Being this close to her, you get a chance to examine this being more closely. Once you look beyond her glistening coat, you can see her physical characteristics more clearly.

She is petite - thinly stalked and standing just slightly shorter than you, with similarly numbered and proportioned limbs. Though her face is humanlike in nature, it is not precise. Spotting the differences in human faces was occasionally challenging to you, but something about hers felt a little off. Maybe an eye too many? And do humans ever normally have those little antennae...?"

I never went back and fleshed it out, but I wanted to do a bit where different types of mushroom girl notice different things about her... Like Magic girls may notice she has a third eye, while Poison girls notice her antennae, but Creepy/Bright/Culinary girls would notice other strange details...

A lot of her description is intentionally vague since I like leaving stuff up to interpretation hehe

What do I gotta do in order to look to Get a Password in the game

Right now passwords are mainly used for distributing special colors in the wilds of the internet. If you follow us on social media, you'll occasionally see us posting a word or phrase in all caps (for example, ILOVEYOU on our recent Valentines Day posts)... this is usually a covert hint to try it as a password in-game!
