I LOVE HOW THEY ARE DRAWN SO MUCH CHARLES IS SO CUTE! The way max is so confident while Charles is annoyed with him is interesting because it’s all a part of Charles mind. It’s As if he wants max to call him out and break him down psychologically somewhere in his mind everything max said he feels himself.
this is a Cherik ancient text and if you love them you have to read it. it’s uncanny x men 309 no context is really needed as it’s stand alone.
Absolutely 0 platonic explanation for imagining your enemy dressed in a fully white suit days prior to your students wedding while blatantly telling yourself you wish you were in that exact situation

Charles Xavier's inappropriate feelings towards Jean Grey
Tumblr media
The 60s run of X-Men was honestly half a pulp romance comic. Jean is the only girl/woman in the X-Men and all the dudes are backbiting sex pests (except Scott, who likes her but is too shy/concerned about his eyes to tell her.) From the moment she arrives they trip over each other to be near her and impress her. This was a frequent romance dynamic at Marvel (then Timely Comics) - one woman, a bunch of overzealous 'suitors' and the 'good guy' who'd have some obstacle to overcome to 'win' her love.
Stan Lee sucked at writing women, and mostly just wrote men with his own personality (eww) but he broke with the format here by positioning two men in the 'good guy' role. One of them being Charles Xavier, who is explicitly much older and in a position of power over Jean, was a wretched choice. Fortunately he dropped these secret feelings of his.
Tumblr media
It probably would have stayed a Silver Age oddity - inappropriate and creepy but a one off like the time the famously red Scarlet Witch wore green. However, when introducing Onslaught as Xavier's 'darkness' Scott Lobdell picked it up and ran with it. The titular villain approaches Jean and tries to get her onside, taking her back in time (now she has telepathy) to observe Chuck's thoughts for herself. He's ostensibly trying to challenge her faith in her mentor but another reading is that this is the part of Xavier that absolutely has those feelings and wants to possess Jean - the subtext of the 'good guy' made text.
Tumblr media
Jean asks Onslaught who he is and this is his answer - 'I am frustration.' Onslaught is a chimeric megalomaniac who wants to take over or destroy the world, but he is definitely made from Xavier and Magneto's 'desire for domination,' as Doctor Nemesis puts it. I find it interesting that this plot point was dug up and centered then not really spoken of again. 'Frustration' is especially loaded.
Creating new shitty things for Chuck to have done in the past has become a repeat source of drama for writers, but this is one that has a textual origin. It's almost become a cliche that he's got a seemingly infinite number of skeletons in his closet (one reason why the recent Sarah Gaunt focus made me groan) to the point it's hit diminishing returns. There's only so much you can pin on him before he becomes unsympathetic, though YMMV on that.
It's obviously a good thing that Xavier didn't vocalise these feelings or directly act on them, but 'loving' a teen was a God awful writing choice. The question is - how seriously do you take it? Does it factor in your personal judgement of Charles Xavier's character? Surely it has to, after all he's taken advantage of his power over people before, entering a romantic and sexual relationship with a patient in his care. Gabrielle Haller was fridged long ago, but with Xavier's manipulation, control, and training child soldiers all points of debate and conflict amongst X-Men right now, how far will they take it?
Not far enough to compromise their valuable IP, that's for sure.

there is definitely no perfect way for them to reintroduce him as disabled in the comics because of how often it’s flip flopped in previous runs so it’s going to feel like ā€œoh we’re doing this again?ā€ No matter what but, there are definitely good and bad ways at going about they could always retcon that he was never ā€œperfectlyā€ able bodied have him say he sorta played it up and pretended his body had no pains on Krakoa. It would certainly be in character for Charles to be so stuck up and ableist towards himself that when he’s walking he would want to pretend he’s been magically completely ā€œcuredā€ especially when he was helping lead Krakoa. It would be more subtle and less ā€œshock and aweā€ with watching him being disabled again.
I can’t wait to see your post on him being disabled and able bodied throughout the comics no matter how long it takes to come! Good luck in moving houses btw it’s never really easy going someplace unfamiliar or new šŸ’—

even if the writers themselves aren’t disabled they should definitely do their research and ask disabled people for coaching and what not. showing his house as accessible him having some chronic pains something small can go a long way and even if he’s walking then leg braces or a cane (which they have done before) would help a ton! I would love to see a post on how often he’s been in and out of his wheelchair but I do imagine it would be a nightmare to make lol
I do find magneto becoming disabled while Charles is walking very out of touch and weird. They treat his disability like an aesthetic or a ā€œcostumeā€ to wear I even saw cable in a comic in HIS wheelchair as an alternate universe or something. it’s definitely in poor taste to say the least. a disability isn’t a part of superhero identity to give or take it’s a disability HIS specifically in this case so it’s a part of his identity no one else’s. With all that said Xavier needs to be disabled again already.

They kind of use Charles as a source of drama and conflict and then drop it after they’ve milked it. He feels like a plot device or a ā€œscapegoat characterā€ more often than not and this is coming from someone who loves him as dubious and gray but not a full villain. I think the Jean thing should be buried as yes, Charles is problematic for sure but this has been called out by fans as playing into ableist stereotypes that crippled men are creepy and can’t love like other people the ā€œcreepy cr*ppleā€ type of thing
the 60s comic only ever saw the reason he couldn’t tell her was because he was crippled and because the writers were misogynistic and saw Jean as a source of desire for every male around her. I don’t know why they brought it in onslaught back but it’s misogynistic and ableist and I feel like when we hate on Charles we have to be mindful not to accidentally play into ableist stereotypes. Also it’s just a stupid idea overall lol

YES. the music is top notch the fights are cool the first class kids are great and Erik and Charles dynamic and chemistry? Amazing. It’s the only movie where they take advantage of those two’s dynamic completely which is such a shame. James McAvoy even said that he felt they wasted those two after the first movie. And yeah, it really did damage sidelining essentially the founding fathers of the x men in the prequel movies. They did cherik so well yet so dirty.
Kind of crazy how out of all the x-men movies the clear best one is first class

I had always wondered how he snapped out of it in the og timeline. This is a great theory on how. And I don’t really feel that bad for Hank yes, he wanted to help him but he made the drug that Charles was abusing and while that obviously wasn’t his intention making a depressed disabled man a drug to use instead of encouraging psychical therapy and then enabling it once he gets addicted for EIGHT YEARS is insane..
Charles' great tragedy in DoFP is that he turned into his mother
All jokes aside, he really did end up paralleling his mother, a fate he spent his life trying to avoid. Charles lost the love of his life and, unable to cope, turned to drugs and alcohol. He was then taken care of by his student/pseudo son for the next ten years. While he didn't end up remarrying an abusive partner, his story during this time follows his mother's. Personally I think what snapped him out of the haze in the original timeline was looking in the mirror and seeing his mother look back. Realizing he was accidentally doing to Hank what his mother did to him. If somebody wants to write a fic about this I HIGHLY encourage it

I never thought about this but you are so right. Between his childhood and the sheer magnitude of his gifts he had to have learned to be at some kind of peace with himself and sadly, grow up and mature quicker then most people šŸ’”
Having discovered that the ā€œpoint between rage and serenityā€ implies that Charles has indeed felt the gamut of the emotional states.
He’s tried every combination to get control of his gifts, to keep them tucked out of the way so nobody noticed.
The point between rage and serenity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is the place of steely determination.
It is the stability upon which great deeds are carried out.
Not utter peace and tranquility. Not incandescent rage. Not giddy joyousness. The calm, purposeful state of being where one has something to do and the will to do it.
Tumblr media
A rational state of mind with drive and purpose, like the steering wheel on a battleship. It’s got to be a calm, steady hand to guide that kind of power for a purpose.
We see Charles at many extremes of emotion, and yet he always goes back to the middle. He doesn’t stay at the extremes. He goes back to the middle ground where his first wisdoms have been rooted. It’s consistent.
Honestly, that’s really good advice anyway.
I’m just having so many thoughts about this right now.

James McAvoys acting skills truly amaze me you can tell just by looking at him how destroyed his life is. Even in the last image when he’s driving he looks so defeated.
I wish dark Phoenix was better because I like the idea of showing a more flawed Charles but the writing had it out for him and the characters treated him like he was a disgusting person when even his worse mistake was still out of trying to protect a little girl from an awful truth. Don’t get me started on how awful Hank was in this movie I lowkey wanted him dead by the end 😭 the action was top notch though and at least it goes a bit smoother then apocalypse.
Charles in xmdp slowly losing everything that kept him going throughout the years and watching his dream crumble in front of his eyes

only for Erik to show up, a week or two after trying to kill Charles’ daughter and just generally being an asshole, with a chessboard and an engagement ring LMAO:

ā€œsorry about saying no one cares about you anymore and trying to kill your daughter do you want to move in with me and we can live the life we’ve always dreamed of together šŸ˜»ā€
swooping in before dofp Charles 2.0 happens 😭 but yknow i still wish we got to see Charles grieving over his sister and daughter (yes Jean is his daughter he gave birth to her i will die on this hill) cause like their deaths were only a few days apart and they quite literally meant the world to Charles
ig people mourn in different ways but he should cry on camera at least one time cmon guys

I meant the fact I feel like Charles and Erik’s dynamic was dumbed down was unpopular because I know people LOVE them in this movie. I feel like it’s ooc for Charles to call Erik a ā€œmonsterā€ and immediately believe he killed the president? It’s obviously for drama so that Charles won’t help Logan immediately and I don’t buy it. I know there was supposed to be a movie between fc and dofp where we got to see Erik do more as magneto and that definitely would have helped it for me. and Yeah, ten years went by but i still don’t feel like Charles would have completely gave up on him like that.
and Erik’s character before the finale seems off. I feel like they used him for ravens story more then his own or him and Charles. But I know Fassbender and James said they started cutting down screen time for them and that probably damaged the movie more. I still like dofp but how Erik alone and his relationship with Charles was handled makes first class my favorite always.
charles xavier is so annoying he had a harder time living with himself than erik did being in CIA solitary confinement
