Inside Job is out!

“The Saphrax Protocol” designs

Finally... Here are my designs for the season 7 finale. This was one of my favorite episodes of the season too. Just a few thoughts below:

Hank, Action Man, and Phage-  are all having some weird shared NDE. Oh and I think it’s pretty self-explanatory (if you listen to their conversations) what those costumes are referencing right ; )

Guild Blackout 01- these guys are like beefed up, super specialized guild commandos... Basically, Jackson Publick wanted updated guild commandos so now (based on his sketches) we have these guys.

Guild Choir & Drummer- the drummer is straight-up occult inspired, but check out the hooded cone head on the choir guy... That fella was inspired by real-life cloaked and hooded Catholics celebrating Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Spain! 

Okay so that’s about it for now. Maybe I’ll post a few pages from the new Go Team Venture!: The Art and Making of The Venture Bros. book after this... Otherwise this will likely be my last VB post for a while. I hope you all enjoyed this season; we definitely put our blood, sweat, and tears into it for ya!

“The Forecast Manufacturer” designs

Good times with The Forecast Manufacturer! This was a pretty great episode all around (both to design for and to watch) with a real punch in the gut ending too!

Most of the designs that I had for this were pretty routine redress stuff, but I certainly got a challenge out of Mission Creep... Notice all of the costume revisions applied to his final inked design (this was the result of notes from Jackson Publick)- making him a lot less “Cable-ish” and much more hodgepodge crazy man.

“The Terminus Mandate” designs

Here are some of the designs that I worked on for “The Terminus Mandate”. Fun stuff all around, and as a bonus I even got to draw Action Johnny again- both for his present day scenes and his flashback! Not much else to add here except...

I have to add that we really had an A++ design team on board for this season. I’m super proud to have gotten the chance to work with this bunch, and you should check out all of their artworks in the links below... Seriously, we really do luck out and get the hardest working, most professional, tough as nails bad-ass artists. Did I mention how proud I am of these people for all of the great work they put into this show? They’re just bursting with talent and you should follow them:

"The Unicorn in Captivity" designs

... So many Eyes were Wide Shut in this episode. There’s also a good helping of Mark Hamill to be heard if you know where to listen ; )

Again I’ve placed my photo reference on the templates next to my rough designs, and again I’ve blurred out the naughty bits where necessary... Sorry.

Oh yeah, I skipped posting anything for “Bellicose Proxy”-checked my files and just didn’t find anything worth sharing. I’ll definitely have a bunch to post for “The Terminus Mandate” though!

“The Inamorata Consequence” designs

Just call me Mr. Posts Late from now on... Been a bit preoccupied over here so please excuse my missing a few days of posting...

There’s not too much to say about these. Looks like I continued displaying photo reference where I thought it might be helpful- whether it’s to provide real-life examples of a hairstyle (in Dermott’s case), photo comparisons for likeness & costuming (for Dominique Dawes’s design), or additional gas mask options (as with Hank’s gas mask design).

FYI, some of the inks posted here are not quite finals (a lot of that red line art is rough line) that I then handed off to our inker to complete.

“The High Cost of Loathing” designs (part 2)

Okay here’s a teeny-tiny post for the rest of the designs I have for The High Cost of Loathing. I can’t find my inks for these so I’m just going to throw the roughs up here and move on : )

A few thoughts below...

VonHelping_v01- The direction that I got for this guy was that he needed to come off as a kindly (though perhaps hiding a dark side) and hip professor. And I think in the script Monarch & 21 make a reference to him looking like Paul Atreides (from Dune!), so he’s got a smidge of that in his design... As well as a dash or two of Carl Sagan for good measure.

Jared_Naked_v02- Would you believe I got a note as to how his dongle should look... Very specific direction on this show hahaha. Alas this is a family-friendly tumblr so here... Have some pixels.

Doc_With_Bandages_On_Face_v02- Yeah even something as basic as a hospital gown gets referenced for this show- specificity is super important in Ventureland. And this design appears post window jump scene, so all of those bandages needed to correspond with the cut marks on his face from the previous design.

“The High Cost of Loathing” designs (part 1)

Jeez, I’m really slacking off again with my posts huh? Here are some of the designs I did for The High Cost of Loathing... Lots of fun costume stuff! I’ll post more tomorrow.

Oh and some quick thoughts below on presentation and the importance of photo reference... If anyone is interested:

Monarch_New_Costume_v01- This new armor is partially based on Monarch’s Death’s Head Panoply Battle Armor. I suggested that we have it radiate with light and sparkle like Liam Neeson’s god armor in that goofy 2010 “Clash of The Titans” remake haha. I added the photo mostly for laughs, but I think it also helps show the vibe I was going for.

21_New_Uniform_v01- For some reason I also pasted in bits from the script onto the roughs... Probably because there was a lot going on in these scenes, and certain character designs had different costume variations or functionality.

Doc_Wearing_Suit_Jacket_v02 & Watchers 01-02- For fantasy/sci-fi tech costumes you can usually get away with making it all up. But Doc here required a specific “billionaire” suit & glasses look, and the cargo ship watchmen needed authentic, believable outfits... So reference from real life was a must for this stuff.

“Arrears in Science” designs (part 2)

Lots of fun stuff in this episode, but boy oh boy did this thing take forever... Totally worth it though ; )

Here are a few more designs that I worked on: some cool Jonas Venture Sr. flashback designs, a young version of Manstrong, and a redesign of one of our most beloved (well maybe just among some of the old-timers within the production) recurring background guys- Hate Bit.

Okay not a whole lot to show for episode 702. It was still pretty fun, but this was a light episode for me so just one post for this one. I’ll post some stuff for “Arrears in Science” tomorrow... That one was a doozy.

“The Venture Bros. & the Curse of the Haunted Problem“ designs (part 3)

Okay I lied... Here’s one more post for “The Curse of The Haunted Problem”.

Some old-timers today... Jefferson Twilight’s updated design, as well as updated present-day (elderly) versions of Action Man & Kano in their Team Venture costumes. Sadly, I don’t think these versions of Action Man & Kano made it into the final cut of the episode, but I’m sure we’ll find a use for ‘em in the future : )

“The Venture Bros. & the Curse of the Haunted Problem“ designs (part 2)

Okay so these are designs that show up in the second act- when all of the proverbial shit hits all of the proverbial fans. Enjoy!

… FYI, the animated gif at the top is a rough test that I hammered out while working out the final version of Jonas Sr’s head. It’s a bit more involved than what I’d usually do, but this was no normal design assignment. In the end Jackson Publick decided against too much lip movement (Jonas’s voice comes from a speaker or something)… And so the final inked mouth chart just opens & shuts.

“The Venture Bros. & the Curse of the Haunted Problem“ designs (part 1)

Well it’s been a long time in the making (actually not that long by Venture standards), but the latest season of The Venture Bros. is finally up and running! Aaaaaaand I’m way behind on my season 7 design posts, so I’m going to be playing catch up this week- starting tonight and continuing throughout the week I will post all of my designs from the first three episodes of this new season.

I'm splitting this first episode up into two separate posts- so keep an eye out for “part 2″ tomorrow night... The other two design posts will follow in the days after!
