Perhaps my biggest issue with Zootopia was that despite focusing on issues of racism and prejudice, I always felt like it only did so in a superficial and barebones way. And this issue became harder to ignore after watching Nimona.
The racism within the world of Zootopia is less of a formidable obstacle and more just a mere hurdle on the track that just quickly jumped over. The biggest example of this problem is with the film's "main antagonist," Mayor Bellwether. Aside from being a crappy twist villain, we never see the effects she has had while she was in power, effects such as policies, laws, or other systemic powers she could've wielded to malign and oppress the predators of Zootopia.
But the way Nimona tackles the subject of prejudice just completely puts Zootopia to shame. For Nimona (the character), the malice she experiences is not some mere bump in the road, it's a suffocating presence that surrounds her on every side, one that she has to endure on a constant basis. Whereas the supremacism in Zootopia was this mere stomachache that fades as soon as it appears, in Nimona, it's this all-consuming cancer that infects every corner of society from government to law enforcement, to goshdarn cereal ads. And not only that but this culture of supremacism is also accepted by almost everyone in said society, much of the time without them even asking themselves why they're accepting it.
Many have argued that you shouldn't go too hard on Zootopia's social commentary because "it's only a kid's movie," but after seeing Nimona tackle the same subject with far more depth and nuance, I can't help but ask: "what's Zootopia's excuse?"

I got a feeling that a Mizu x Akemi (AkeMizu) ship will be a thing after the show airs.
In one of the trailers, Mizu killed a couple clawed soldiers (the same clan that were fighting Mizu in one of the fight scenes) that were about to kill Akemi, saving her life in the process. Even the first thing Mizu did afterwards was hold her hand out to Akemi suggesting a rescue, signifying a “come with me if you want to live”.
Akemi also says to Mizu (probably and likely), “Under you mask, you’re not the killer you pretend to be. You’re just…angry.”, at some point in the show so I’m not sure if Akemi may either be a bit distrustful to Mizu due to her goal for revenge or a bit sympathetic to her and coming to understand Mizu, but I do think Akemi would also empathetically come to understand what’s behind Mizu’s vengeful demeanor.
Heard that Mizu and Akemi may have scenes together along with a potential love triangle between Mizu and Akemi (along with Taigen likely and maybe), so I hope it’s true if that’s the case. Would be great to explore the chemistry between the two of them since they’re both polar opposites while they might have something in common.
Looking forward to watching Blue Eye Samurai though!
UPDATE: Turns out Akemi is sadly distrustful towards Mizu as she thought at first that she bested and soon believed she killed Taigen although Mizu actually spared him, to one point where she tried to kill her although she soon helped her to safety when the clawed clan were attacking. Sadly, Mizu also let the ones that looked for Akemi take her back home and when she comes to rescue her in the season finale, Akemi told Mizu "We are not friends." while the latter ensures that Taigen is still alive and understands how much he loves her. Despite this, I still have hopes that the Mizu x Akemi (AkeMizu) ship would still be a thing.

Remarkable to see Guillermo del Toro’s TALES OF ARCADIA series accounted for 82.7 million hours of viewership on Netflix in the first half of 2023 alone.
Grateful to have been a writer and eventually co-executive producer and co-showrunner on the series. Proud of what our team accomplished — and a little overwhelmed…
… But it proves a hunger for YA adventure animation is out there!
Honestly, this bodes well for STAR TREK: PRODIGY as well, which drops on Christmas Day on Netflix!
