So I'm slightly obsessed with Severance (2022) and I may have spent like a week straight cutting together an Innie Cut and an Outie cut and holy shit guys it's such an experience. I watched them both straight through like long movies and

The Outie Cut is like an obscure offbeat indie dark comedy where none of your questions get answered and there's zero resolution at the end.

You really get to focus on oMark's perspective, which is interesting because in the show it feels like iMark is the main focus. We get to focus on how oMark's depression has impacted his life, and his journey through the confusion of what's happening with Lumon and Severance. The story feels slower and more grounded. It works better than I anticipated.

The Innie Cut is like a slow and unexpected descent into madness. Honestly, I thought the Outie Cut would be spookier, but no. The Innie Cut is very unsettling.

At first, it kind of just feels like a regular kind of office life show, where it's not at all unusual that we never see the characters at home. We only see them in the office because the show is about the office.

But then there are. Things. Very strange unsettling things. Just out of nowhere. With no context from the outside world. No relief from the blinding bright white landscape of Lumon Industries. The hallways that never stop, the walls closing in on you, the fact that you can't ever leave.

And oh my god when they wake up in the outside world in the final episode it is. SO. JARRING. It's been like three plus hours of bright white office at this point. And then suddenly, disconcertingly, you're thrown into this world that is dark and warm but unfamiliar and treacherous and you have to navigate it perfectly and fast or suffer the consequences.

And iMark, at the party. When you watch Severance for the first time, the party scene is a meeting of two worlds that are familiar to you, the viewer. When you watch the Innie Cut, you're just as off balance as iMark. You don't know these people. You don't know who you can trust. You don't know the right thing or the wrong thing to do here.

Anyways I'd love to share these cuts with people but I have no idea how to go about doing that

idk how likely this is, but i really hope we get to see an interaction between outie mark and ms casey. ms casey still doesn’t know that gemma & mark are married or that gemma was being kept prisoner the entire time she was working at lumon! and i know that a conversation between them would have a lot of complicated feelings flying around (remembering how distraught mark was after his reintegration flash of ms casey), but he was so gentle & honest with gemma’s cold harbor innie that i would still really like to see him talk with ms casey. or just ms casey coming back at all, i refuse to believe her being unceremoniously led to her death without any closure is the last we’ll see of her :(

ooh that's a fun idea! i also miss her, she deserves the world and she's so sweet and precious and the way her last moments ever were so scary :( i don't know how likely it is because there has to be a motivating factor for that conversation to happen and i don't know what it could be, unless ofc lumon activates the otc to abuse gemma more in that case i will be very very upset...

and yeah, i think omark and imark's conversation just traumatised everyone like i don't think any version of mark and gemma conversing would be as heated as theirs, mainly because of the premise that they're both in love with each other deep down. i think the concept that the outies are the 'worse' versions of themselves is kind of reductive but also isn't it so compelling that if it were the case, mark and gemma fell in love with the imperfect versions of themselves that had pain and joy and everything in between... like idk that reallyyy gets me. they've loved each other through the worst parts of their relationship and still came out on the other side so whatever that conversation is i think it would be quite sweet honestly (and also ms casey is super forgiving like she didn't even fault imark for sending her to the break room and said it was her favorite time getting to be with him.... UGHHH).

i also want to know how gemma feels about her innies like it must be so complicated. she knows she goes into the rooms and forgets but i doubt she knows she's been severed 25 times over so just a slight tangent but i would also like to see a ms casey and gemma convo via camcorder if we're discussing what else we'd like to see xx

Mark & Gemma across timelines and consciousnesses

dr. reghabi is objectively such a funny character

she gave people fucked up corporate lobotomies until one day she apparently went “wait… what if this is…. wrong” and decided to invent fucked up lobotomy 2, electric boogaloo, to reverse the first one. but also it might kill you

mark saw his innie’s bff die in front of his eyes as a side effect of fucked up lobotomy 2 and her reaction was to go “well maybe he wouldn’t have died, if he had listened to me”

she went from “i hate the term innie, it’s so infantilizing” to “your innie is a baby, mark, a literal baby, two years old, and you brought him into this world without his permission” in like one sentence

she followed mark into a weird location to convince him to try fucked up lobotomy 2 with killer arguments like “i’m better at it now”, then proceeded to do the procedure in his basement

she moved into his house seemingly without asking

she also made mark acessory to murder within like one hour of knowing each other though that’s less on her and more on the situation

This research and Lachman’s innate sense of the character led to one of the “Chikhai Bardo” episode’s most heartbreaking moments, when Gemma apologizes to Mark after they arrive at the fertility clinic for the first time. The line was something Lachman improvised, when she realized Gemma would feel guilty that she couldn’t get pregnant even though, of course, she had no reason to. “It just sort of came out,” she says. “A lot of women, even though it is not our fault and we have no control over it when something like that happens, we feel this need to apologize. We tend to do that. Generally, we tend to be quite apologetic about things that we can’t control.” (x)
